After enjoying the beautiful view of the stream and the babbling brook, I Wielded a plastic spoon like a samurai wields his sword, slicing into the frozen cream with expert precision. The whip cream, chocolate and flavored ice cream I had ordered all culminated in an explosion of flavors in my mouth. I think I let out a little scream of ecstasy as it slid down my throat. There is nothing like homemade ice cream to get you excited for the next bite. I probably gained 2 pounds from eating this enormous treat that was Prepared with love. But it's worth every pound I might gain. Shortly thereafter it was time to get back on the motorcycle and ride a few more mountain tops. The sun was warm and starting to get an orange tint as it was contemplating setting in a couple hours. The warm wind was blowing the leaves ever so slightly, the Mountain tops were screaming my name like a lost child screams for their parents at the mall. I tried one of the new $14 salads--no protein, just lettuce, a few veggies, and a so-called "homemade" Italian dressing. I genuinely enjoyed the dressing and asked for the recipe three times out of curiosity. On the third time, I was told she wouldn't share it--but would be willing to sell it to me. That response rubbed me the wrong way. In today's economy, that kind of cold and transactional reply from a small business I've supported feels off-putting and greedy. On top of that, I tried a "tiramisu cookie" that had no coffee flavor, no mascarpone, nothing that even remotely resembled tiramisu. It tasted like a plain sugar cookie, and honestly, it felt like false advertising. If you're going to market something as tiramisu, it should at least reflect the flavors of what you're promising. Between that and the secretive dressing situation, I can't help but question whether the dressing is even homemade--or if it's just bottled and marked up. These experiences have made me lose trust in the brand and what it claims to represent. I won't be returning.

It's a crime against the people of Saratoga Springs. And it's just plane offensive. I regret if anyone was driven to try Mrs. London's based on my previous glowing reviews. I am so sorry. I had no idea. But I was just there this morning. I gazed into the pastry case at the croissants, and my heart sank. I felt sick. The croissants looked like something you would see in an airport. I think the croissants at Costco might be better. These were flat, flabby, and pale things. Far from the perfect, golden, flaky, structured, glistening beauties of the past. And this isn't about fond recollections. I have receipts. Photos from the past and pictures of the present. It's night and day. If the new owners aren't going to preserve Mrs. London's food, they should have the decency to put someone else's name on the joint. I too asked about the breads, and was told "their baker retired". Fortunately, Michael London taught other people to bake amazing artisan bread, and his legacy lives on elsewhere. Unfortunately, nobody at the shop bearing his name bothered to pick up the torch. What a shame. It is so sad. I am literally heart broken. This was one of my favorite bakeries in the country. I went out of my way to make a special stop in my limited time passing through the region. But I suppose nothing lasts forever, and this is a valuable reminder of that unfortunate fact. My days visiting Mrs. London's are over. I can no longer recommend it in good conscience. Perhaps the hot chocolate is still good, and the decor is still lovely. However, if you look closely at the glowing reviews, they all point back to a time that has now sadly passed.

Next to the register was a small package wrapped in red & white string, labeled "Bonnie's Uncommon Fruitcake." I've been a sucker for trying fruitcakes ever since I had my first slice of Freihofer's Fruitcake over seventy years ago. Here was a locally baked fruitcake with no difficult to pronounce or preservative ingredients. That definitely made it "Uncommon." Pecans, dates, candied fruit (cherries, pineapple), eggs, sugar, flour, baking powder, and salt. That's it! I thought it tasted delicious. It was not overly sweet, had a good amount of nuts and candied fruit, and there was minimal cake (flour) holding it all together perfectly.
