GLUTEN FREE and CELIAC FRIENDLY!!!! hush puppies, catfish filet, fries, cole slaw
    Hannah S.

This place was AMAZING! I'm visiting family in Concord and was hoping to find a celiac-friendly restaurant-found this one on the Find Me Gluten Free app with a 100% celiac safe rating, according to one reviewer, a relative of the owner has celiac disease so they understand it well. I read that they had hush puppies and just had to try it-gluten free Southern food is so hard to come by! It's down a dirt road in the middle of nowhere and there's a big sign that says cash only when you walk in-a little intimating at first! But once we were seated and met the server she was so sweet and so was everyone seated around us. I asked about their gluten free procedures and she said they make everything separately, which was music to my ears. I ordered fried pickles, a small catfish filet and hush puppies. They took a while to make the food, which to me was a super good sign they were being careful not to cross contaminate my food with gluten. When it came out in could hardly believe my eyes! Real, golden-brown fried food! The only way I knew it was gf was because they brought mine out separately and my hush puppies looked different than my cousin's, who ordered regular ones. The taste---y'all, I was transported back to all my wonderful childhood memories visiting my family in the South and getting that delicious cooking I couldn't find anywhere else. It helped that the restaurant is so cute with lots of vintage decor and the staff was friendly as could be. Truly reminiscent of a simpler time and the food was just out-of-this-world. My two native Tennessean adult cousins, my husband, my extremely picky toddler, my 9-month-old, and my 8-year-old cousin all ate every last bit of their food. The true definition of a HIDDEN GEM. I already can't wait for my next trip to NC so I can visit again.

**This place is cash only** Today I ventured into rural Cabarrus to try out a location that I have heard about for years but never tried. I admit that I felt a little unsure about the place as we turned into the driveway. The restaurant is small and rustic. It's a throwback to the 60s and 70s. I am so glad we went in and gave it a chance. Below the cash register the sanitation grade was displayed. They currently hold a 96! That is good for an older building. The dining area was dated but very clean. I felt a sense of nostalgia by eating there. I enjoyed the atmosphere. The waitress brought us a menu that was a notebook. The first two pages of the menu was the food and drink items. The last three pages detailed the history of the business. They even offer gluten free menu items. I decided on the fried flounder with a side of okra and macaroni salad and hush puppies. My wife got the Calabash shrimp with white slaw and onion rings. We were both very happy with what we ordered. My flounder was thick white meat cooked perfectly. The wait staff was very attentive. They looked out each other's tables. We were well taken care of. I can't wait to visit this little gem again! Don't be taken aback by it's small rustic appearance- the food is good.

Just what I've been looking for! An old style Fish Camp! We loved the food, it tasted great and was reasonably priced. PLUS they can do almost anything as gluten free! I say again, this fish camp can do most of their fried seafood as gluten free! That's REALLY hard to find.

    Whole fried catfish.

The salads are freshly made and the prices are reasonable. However the service was unusually slow and tables had not been bussed from the previous rush, which was not typical for this restaurant. A Familiar Craving That Fell a Little Short This Time…read more This review is for L&L Hawaiian Barbecue, and I wish I were writing it with more enthusiasm because I've had good experiences here before. This was probably my third or fourth visit, and I came in craving Hawaiian barbecue--specifically the grill and seafood mix with kalbi short ribs and fried shrimp, something I've ordered many times at other L&L locations, including the one in downtown San Mateo. I arrived around 4:00-4:30 in the afternoon, and there was no one behind the counter. They have a self-order kiosk, which I tried to use, but it was a little clunky and frustrating. Eventually, an employee came out, and I asked if I could just order directly. I requested the combo with only short ribs and shrimp--no fish. He had to check with the chef, which felt unusual since that substitution has never been an issue before, but eventually it was approved. The pineapple coconut smoothie, by the way, was delicious--sweet, cold, and exactly what I needed on a hot day. No complaints there at all. Where things fell short was the portion and overall value. When I got home and took a closer look, there were only six small pieces of shrimp and just one piece of kalbi short rib. Normally, you get two. That difference matters, especially when you've made a 20-minute drive with a certain expectation based on past visits. The flavor was still good. The food tasted like L&L, and the condiments were right--tartar sauce included, which I appreciated. But small details add up. There were no napkins or utensils in the bag, and the portion felt noticeably lighter than what I've received before. To be fair, part of this is on me--I should have double-checked the contents more carefully before leaving. Still, consistency is important, especially when customers return because they remember a reliable experience. I'm not writing this to discourage anyone. There's a whole world of good food out there, and this place can absolutely be part of it. I just hope the team pays closer attention to portions and those small touches that make the experience feel complete. Because when it's done right, L&L really does hit the spot.

This is a relatively new restaurant that opened in November 2024 in the Gibson Mill Food Hall (…read morelocated next to the Depot at Gibson Mill). Initially when we walked by the store front I was not impressed and was actually making my way to another restaurant located at the back of the food hall. While I was looking around, I happened to turn around and see a gentleman eating a massive sushi burrito. I immediately interrupted his eating and inquired where he had gotten it. He of course directed me back to Flip Sushi. We spoke to the lady behind the counter who informed us that the customer was eating their OCEAN LOVERS poke bowl but it had been made into a burrito. She stated any of their bowls could be made into a burrito and we could add or subtract any ingredient(s). The Ocean Lovers included: Tuna, Yellowtail, Salmon, Shrimp, Seaweed Salad, Avocado, Edamame, Cucumber, Carrots, Rice. we opted to omit the Yellowtail and add double tuna with spicy mayo. When we got the burrito it was HUGE. It is definitely big enough for 2 people with healthy appetites' to share. When we were finished we had to go back and talk to the young lady behind the counter and complement her on the food. We ended up finding out she was actually the chef who had created the menu. We could not stop raving about the roll. The rice mirin used in the rice was perfectly seasoned for the rice; not too sweet and not too sour. The vegetables were fresh and crisp and the fish was fresh and flavorful. I loved the roll so much I could have just eaten a veggie one and been completely satisfied (this is a BIG compliment coming from me because I am a major meat and potatoes girl). The only negative thing I can say about this place is that it has a lack of advertising. The walls of the restaurant/booth are painted black and there are no pictures of any of the food; only the neon sign and the menu. I feel the business is really missing out on an opportunity to sell this amazing food by not showing any of it. Had I not seen that one customer's food, I would never had know what I was missing
