Floors are creaky and there were some spots in the hallway where I thought I might fall through. I had the very last room in the hotel and it was quite a walk back to the lobby. There is very limited cell phone reception here as well. Wifi only works in public areas and only worked two of the three nights we were there. Some staff members were friendly. Most were unprofessional--including the desk clerk who continued to speak to her friend on her personal cell phone while I waited for assistance. Bar staff was friendly and very helpful when one of the kids in our group broke his wrist running around in the back woods area of the grounds. On two of the three nights there was some evening entertainment in the hall. The billiards table was also a plus since there was absolutely nothing else to do in the evenings. Food was good but breakfasts were way too salty.

Dinner served from 6pm so we placed our order at 6.01 - starving! I opted for steak pie which came with chunky chips and veg. Big hearty chunks of proper steak served in a puff pastry box. Great idea serving like this as I got to enjoy all of the pie without having the pie dish in the way. Bf opted for canon of roe deer with mustard mash, veg and port/wine jus. Meat was like butter, absolutely beautiful. Not so keen on the mustard mash - I'm a mash lover and like it straight up without any bells and whistles. Price wise, my food was around a tenner and the Bf's meal nearer £15 but it was honestly worth it - talk about food envy! We're going back to visit Go Ape! so will make another stop here, and I'll be having the deer next time!

We ordered our drinks inside, my boyfriend a Thistley Cross Cider and me a Raspberry Koppaberg cider and managed to snag a table outside- the weather was gorgeous out! We sat and enjoyed our drinks before deciding to order some food. My boyfriend went in for more drinks and menus and we decided that between us, we were going to split the cheeseburger and the cajun chicken burgers. Both came with chips, the chicken burger came with salsa as well. Both were pretty tasty and the chips went down a treat. After another drink, we headed back to the b&b right after a stop for some ice cream. This pub/hotel is really nice. It's clientele was a mix of locals (the guys from the canoe place were there enjoying drinks) as well as travelers such as ourselves. We will be visiting Aberfoyle again and when we do, The Forth Inn will be on our list of must stop places!

The restaurant is nearly all glass, has a beautiful stone fireplace and looks out onto Menteith Lake - only a stone's throw away. We sat in the Port Bar, located directly behind and overlooking the restaurant. The furnishings are elegant, tasteful and sumptuous. The surroundings, idyllically bucolic. We arrived too early for lunch, but had a very nice americano, espresso and hot chocolate, served with homemade shortbread. The wait staff were all friendly and helpful. We will definitely be returning to try the food! After our refreshments, we trotted down the road to catch the little ferry to Inchmahome Priory and take a walk around the picturesque island, where Mary Queen of Scots was brought as a four-year-old queen in 1547. Despite the unrelenting rain, we enjoyed a walk around the small island and the impressive ruins. This trip makes a perfect day outing from Edinburgh at just about one hour each way. Do plan to eat lunch at the Waterfront Restaurant. If the rooms are as impressive as the Restaurant/Bar, then a weekend stay would not disappoint!

Chef was Polish and is certainly going places -- as for VERY reasonable prices we got amazing, beautiful dishes like Beet Root, Parsnip Fritters, Chicken wrapped in Parma Ham, Fish and Chips, Lamb, and the most wonderful Bread and Butter Pudding for desert. The views from the room look directly over the lake and mountains in the background which was utterly breathtaking. So onto food. We were seated by the window with great views of the lake again. Service was prompt and friendly which was lovely. For starters: bread with oil and balsamic, and scallops with black pudding. Both pretty good and the scallops were cooked well. Mains: beef burger and the rib eye cooked rare. Again, both good, not amazing though. Dessert was the peanut butter parfait which was clumsily plated but tasted good. Overall it was... good. There was really nothing that stood out or wowed me though. Breakfast the following day was good, we had the classic Scottish breakfast which was hot and tasted good, but again nothing remarkable. And, not long after Friars Wynd had opened its doors, there was a deadly attack on the street. Jeez. Forgetting the location, Friars Wynd is completely different from its much-loved predecessor, The Junk Rooms. And they have done such a good job of making the place look so fresh and bright. There's a lovely bar in the corner and ample room for seating, and a selection of fresh cakes displayed by the window. You can tell instantly that Friars Wynd is worthy of the 'Boutique hotel' title because it feels so luxurious from the moment you step inside. And if the rooms are adequately soundproofed then I'm sure a night's stay would be a blissful one. I've had both lunch and drinks at Friars Wynd and I was impressed by both. The owner is a really lovely, passionate lady who, on both my visits, welcomed me and even remembered me the second time. Lunch was delicious and it was just the spot for the kind of evening drink we were after. My only comment would be that some background music would really do good in creating even more of an atmosphere, especially in the evenings. I do know that the owner is looking to branch out to live music and jazz would be just perfect for Friars Wynd! I do hope Friars Wynd grows, because they've got just the right attitude for a new business; in aiming to impress absolutely everyone that comes through their doors.

Having expected a dirty cramped room and lousy service I was overwhelmingly pleased at being dead wrong. The Inn is owned by a older Scottish couple who were quite spunky. The wife services the bar / restaurant in the evening and the husband in the mornings. They make all of the food from scratch and it is proper Scottish food. I'd got a red tartan hat in Edinburgh and the man teased me a bit to make sure I understood what it was before complementing me on it. They simply could not have been nicer. One odd thing is that in early to mid day you have to walk through the pub to get to the stairs to go up to the room. This is clearly the best local watering hole as all of the locals in the teensy town of Doune were there. They helped us get in and offered to take our bags up for us along with opening the door and all moving. The Scott's really do have a way with hospitality. Now the room was great. The bed was comfy and there was very little to no noise at all despite a pub being below us. The dinner and breakfasts there were also top notch all local made on the spot style. Bonus: This place is a five minute walk from Doune Castle, which was the castle used for every single Monty Python and the Holy Grail castle scene.
