Staying in Chester, the western shore of Lake Almanor was a short adventure on the first night of my stay in the area. Some of the western shore comprises of private property with no beach access but there is a public beach and campground area a few miles out of town. The effects of the 2021 Dixie Fire are seen along the drive, but there were still some green pines along the shore. The beach itself was rocky but wonderfully windswept and dramatic. Late on a Saturday afternoon it was very quiet-only 2 boaters coming in and no one else using the day use area. The water was very choppy following some afternoon thunderstorms and the skies were very moody. It was a nice way to stretch my legs after a long drive from the Bay Area and hope I get the chance to check out the East shore during my visit. read more

This is my 2nd time visiting this lake and its well stocked and very clean. One can see the fishes jumping and swimming from afar. Also, the surrounding bars and restaurants have been very welcoming and have great tasting food. Even an excellent craft brewery is here. read more

Spending our weekend in Lake Almanor and it's absolutely gorgeous. If you haven't been here, be sure to add it to the list! This time of year there isn't a ton of boating action but the fish are biting strong! You can rent fishing Kayaks at Plumas Pines resort on West shore, or enjoy some shore fishing. SeaDoo and boat rentals are available during the summer, I don't think they're available this late in the season. They have paved hikings and biking trails, and close to the road water access for those traveling with young kids or who cannot walk in too far. read more

A really great lake for family, friends and picnics. They do have quite a few different public beach entrances, however, they are hard to find. The one we did find was a bit rocky so I had to carry the kiddos in past a certain point. I would recommend bringing water shoes just in case. The water was absolutely beautiful though. Really warm and gave me that awesome lake feeling that I miss getting back home. read more

This is the most beautiful lake I have ever seen! I came here last year in July for a vacation get away with my boyfriend at the time. I grew up and live in the city so I had never been surrounded by nature in this way. Being at this lake brought me a lot of peace and tranquility. The view of the snow on the mountains was breathtakingly beautiful. The lake water was nice and cold, but still fresh from the melted snow. I am really happy I was able to visit this lake during my stay in Chester. read more

What a fantastic time we had at this lake. It's very big, and there's not a ton of people everywhere. Perfect for water sports, beach play, camping, BBQ, etc. This lake is not a resort area nor a tourist destination. It's a small town with a huge lake next to it. You can stay at the lodge campgrounds or rent a house, or find plenty of state run campgrounds all around. The West short is mostly public access and campgrounds while the East short is mostly privately owned. The town of Chester is really cute with just enough stores for what you need, a couple of places to "shop", a few places to eat, and that's it. The biggest national brand I recognized was True Value hardware - no fast food chains, chain grocers, coffee or big box stores in sight. And that's the beauty of it. Go here if you want to hit the water or be in its peaceful and serene grace. Don't go here if you want luxury and five star appointments when you're done. Lassen National Park is very cool too but keep in mind most things are a 1-2hour drive away. read more

We decided to stop by this lake for some kayaking. I'm so glad we did! We came with our trailer coming back from Oregon and was able to pull up right to the water way. The water was warm enough to go for a swim! Beautiful views of the forest and mountains. There is a great cafe on the water and a place to rent boats and kayaks! Can't wait to come back! read more

Lake Almanor is a large artificial lake in northwestern Plumas County. The reservoir has a capacity of 1,308,000 acre feet and a maximum depth of about 90 feet. It is formed by Canyon Dam on the North Fork of the Feather River, along with other tributaries. The present dam (130 feet tall and composed of hydraulic fill) was constructed by Great Western Power, from 1926 to 1927 and flooded the meadow-filled valley generally known as Big Springs/Big Meadows. In the process, parts of the town of Prattville had to be moved to higher ground. The dam is now owned by Pacific Gas and Electric Company. PG&E uses it for hydroelectricity production, but the lake is also a popular recreation area, with fishing, boating, water skiing, swimming and camping available. Lake Almanor is big and helps keep the nearby town of Chester in business with the various recreational activities and second homes. I spent a nice week at one of these residences and had lunch at a cool place on the West side of the Lake. However, as pleasant as this Lake can be, you'll usually find me going the other way and exploring the many wonders of Lassen National Park. read more

Note to self: We need to find the public entrance because most of these entrances are either privately owned or you are stepping onto private communities surrounding the lake. There is a Pennisula market and Red Onion Grill restaurant near Lake Almanor but we did not venture inside. It's best to come in July when it's warm in the morning and at night. You'll love it even more if you are boating, fishing, camping type of person read more

Purchased a home in the area a year ago. This is a fantastic place to have vacation with the family! The land is beautiful during the winter. Summer has wonderful outdoor recreational activities as well as water sports on the lake. You will not find better fishing. As for the locals who own and operate business up here, I can't say enough nice things about them. The mom and pop restaurants are not something you can find anywhere. The food is amazing! read more

Best kept secret in California and if your looking for a get away this is it. This is not Lake Tahoe with 5 star hotels this is in the country with absolutely stunning views. You can fish the Lakes and rivers or explore the old mining sites and ghost towns. Camping is excellent and there are a few rustic hotels and stores in the area. read more

Great place. Loads of activites and fun to be had. The lake is clean and large with plenty of room for all to enjoy. The local area has a lot to explore. Chester is small town with amazing small town charm. Mt Lassen is just a short drive, there are mulitple trails to hike. read more

Absolutely one of the most gorgeous lake settings in the country. Post card perfect with Mt. Lassen in the background. And, it is still relatively "undiscovered." It does not have the crowds, cold water, or high prices of Tahoe! You can spend the day on the lake boating, skiing, or fishing and hardly see another person all day. Empty golf courses are located throughout the area. This is a great place to bring the kids and enjoy a relaxing mountain lake retreat. The water is warm in the summer.....no need for a wetsuit like Tahoe. Real estate prices are still relatively cheap when compared to Tahoe. People from the Bay area, Sac, and Reno are starting to build beautiful lakefront homes. In 10 years this will be the new Tahoe.....too bad for those of us who know the secret already. I've literally been coming to Lake Almanor my entire life.....of 49 years. I love it here as a home away from home and all the memories it has for me. Definitely come sometime for an above average 4th of July fireworks display. It's gorgeous over the lake. I took one star off because the "beaches" are always a bit of a pain because they are rocky, not sandy...(It's because it's all small chunky lava rock from Lassen.....we just know to bring water shoes especially for the kids. Water shoes aren't a convenience or personal choice at Lake Almanor.....they are a necessity. I've been out a time or two on this lake on a pontoon boat and it's a wonderful time. Relaxing and beautiful. Yes, it can get very crowded....mostly over the 4th, but other major summer weekends. But there are plenty of days throughout the year where it's quiet and peaceful. read more

Just spent a wonderful weekend at the lake..Rocky Point campground is nicely maintained but crowded..the bathrooms are the best pit toilets I have ever seen :) The water was warm, whiich was a nice change from the many alpine lakes with arctic water.. Only down point is how close you are to your neighbor so be nice! read more
