BLUF: Best meal I had while in Scotland. This is a cozy…read morespace that you can easily dress up or be casual in. The service is very friendly and attentive. The menu has so many Scottish foods in it, there's no doubt this is a Scottish fare restaurant. I did have to look some of it up because even other Scottish restaurants hadn't had things like cranachan or rumbledethumps on their menus. Ordered were: bread, beef stovies, lamb rump, slow braised beef short rib, cranachan, and chocolate brownie. The beef stovies is beef stew with a potato pancake hat served in a cast iron cauldron. Very cool presentation, and quite a tasty stew inside. I liked the small cut of everything, so it was easy to eat. The lamb was so tender and flavorful, without being overcooked. I substituted rumbledethumps for the polenta so I could try some, it was a lot like mashed potatoes with some extra flavor in it from the cabbage. The black garlic emulsion was a little earthy but went with the lamb so well as a result. My only fault would be the mint drizzle being too sweet for my taste. The short rib was masterful, essentially fall off the bone, and a good herby rub. The desserts were a step down from the mains. The cranachan felt like it had bromelain in it, breaking down my tongue as I was eating it. Outside of that sharpness, a very tasty and solid dessert. The brownie was heavy and fudgy, so if that's your type of brownie then it's here for you. Otherwise it's too much on a stomach already packing the amazing dinner preceding it. All in all, what a place, what a meal, recommended.

There's options around 15£ but typical plates are 20-35£. We were so hungry we forgot to take dinner pics; we had the Slow Braised Short Rib (uh-freakin-mazing!!) the Chicken Breast (juicy & cuts with a fork) and the Venison Stew (tasted like Filet). Drinks were delightful. Service was stellar (and they were FULLY booked on a Thursday at 8pm; but we shared the 2 tiny hi-top tables near the bar and had an amazing dinner). Dessert was worth going for all on it's own!

(We found a spot upstairs. Our bartender was quite knowledgeable in the extensive collection and guided us to a good choice. That got us to a Duich Moss dram...heavily peated (just the way I like it) from Islay...a great choice for one of our last whiskeys in Scotland. If you like Scotch Whiskey, you can certainly get it any and everywhere in Scotland...but this place is a true Scotch lovers' destination...the selection is unrivaled, and you'll find yourself in a great, historic atmosphere to enjoy it. It's cozy, crowded, and buzzing with life -- often standing room only and packed shoulder-to-shoulder with locals and travelers alike. If you're a whisky fan (or even just whisky-curious), do yourself a favor and try one of their Scotland whisky flights. It's like taking a mini tour of the country's whisky regions without ever leaving your barstool -- and without worrying about driving. The bartenders really know their stuff and are happy to guide you toward something you'll love. A quick heads-up: no football colors allowed, which keeps the atmosphere friendly and relaxed no matter who you support. And speaking of friendly -- the locals here are as welcoming as they come. This is exactly the kind of place where Scotland's famous pub culture shines. Prices are surprisingly reasonable too, so you can sample a few drams without feeling guilty. Whether you're a seasoned whisky nerd or just looking to experience the local vibe, this is the spot. Pull up a stool (if you can find one) and enjoy a proper Scottish night out

Well priced and properly portioned, a good diner easily able to manage three or four choices, Ox & Finch's Cod Cheeks seem something of a signature and are well-worth ordering as Fish, Pork and Blood Sausage join together on Bread like some sort of Catalonian fever-dream. Efficient if not pleasant in terms of service, a variety of youngsters delivering plates in a timely fashion, volume rises as the night goes on thanks to high ceilings, but not so much as to drown out the bold flavors of Beef cooked like Pot Roast beneath Mushroom Gravy or tender Pork Loin kissed with Miso and Sage. Unable to choose just one Dessert, a downfall of dining solo, Chef Craig Nelson and Jonathan MacDonald prove equally well-suited for sweets as they are for savories with both the Financier and Trifle finding sweet yet fresh balance while incorporating varying textures and temperatures.

We chose the trout, crab salad, spiced cauliflower (really good), sea bream (delish), and crispy haddock (nice). I chose the salt baked beatroot for my dessert-flavorful and not too sweet. My wife had the chocolate cremeux that she really loved. Our server was such a friendly person and her way of communicating definitely added good feelings to our experience. It was graduation time for the University of Glasgow and we saw many families with their students. For me, that's a really good sign. I highly recommend this restaurant.

I asked if they had any kind of specialty drink that they did, and he said no and then he paused and he said "well you could do Irn Bru and vodka." So I said "sure, I'll give it a try." The waiter was cool - attentive and friendly. I ordered the crab cakes as an appetizer. They were good. The consistency is a little different than what you would get in the states. I think there was more of whatever the binding agent was (flour and egg?) than the way I've had it back home so it was more cakey and held together better than the way I'm used to which falls apart easily. I had the steak pie which was delicious. The meat was tender and just fell apart. The veggie mix was excellent - carrots, snap peas and maybe parsnips. The snap peas or peas in the pod were absolutely perfectly prepared. They were hot throughout but still were crunchy and slightly sweet. I didn't finish my steak pie only because it was hearty and filling and I wanted to save room for dessert. And oh what a dessert! I hadn't heard of Jaffa cakes, so while I was imagining cake and ice cream like in the states, that was not what arrived! Jaffa cakes are like little wafer cookies with chocolate on one side. It was basically a sundae made with Irn Bru ice cream, chocolate syrup and Jaffa wafer cookies broken and arranged on top. I was the last customer to finish my food and next to last to be rung up. Unfortunately, the machine was having an issue and declining everything. They employed the number one IT recommendation to turn the machine off and turn it back on again. Problem solved, bills paid. I didn't catch the names, but these two who are the closing staff were so good-natured and funny, we were joking around, like we were all old friends! I had a great experience all the way around and highly recommend that you try it out. I look forward to the next time I visit the area and have a meal at The Ship.

The service almost always was super attentive and always made sure we were taken care of. 10/10 recommend the millionaire bars they were almost always delicious and moist I also think it might depend on the baker whose baking too which batch and cutting the bars and desserts because somedays the pieces are different or taste just a little bit better but regardless always tasty! However the only one we did not like surprisingly was the carrot cake. It was just weirdly dense not cakie and like juicy its a bit weird to explain but just wasnt our favorite. Everything else though awesome and the food is just superb! I think my favorite was the vegan fry or haggis toastie if you like a bit of sweet and salty combo!
