The Prestwick Pioneer is blazing a trail when it comes to decent pub food in Prestwick…read more Wetherspoons could easily hold this place up as a flagship venue where the focus is definitely on the eating. If you know the Wetherspoons brand you'll know that they pride themselves on well kept cask ales, ciders and other branded alcoholic beverages at unbelievably low prices. Continental cafe-bar in style, the decor is definitely a step upmarket for the brand. Our visit coincided with one of the hottest days of summer but the efficient air conditioning and the floor to ceiling opening windows made it a comfortable place to chill out and eat lunch. I had a vegetarian curry with coconut cream, two papadums, naan bread, mango chutney AND a pint of west country cider for the princely sum of £6.99. What a bargain. I'll definitely check out curry club Thursdays next time I'm in Prestwick. Big thumbs up too for a menu that helps those with dietary requirements choose what to eat, and also makes sure that there is plenty of choice. Stunning value, and an exceptional Wetherspoons. Follow the crowd! PS they have won awards for the loos, and I can see why. They aren't just clean, they are pretty groovy too.

I really thought there wasn't a single free table but at last I spotted one a table for two, just what we needed! As it was so crowded I thought there would be a long wait for food but not so. In fact we were amazed at how quickly it arrived. Everything was, as usual in this Wetherspoon chain, quite delicious and very good value for money. In our book that's a great combination! The bar staff were helpful and pleasant. We won't hesitate to call in there again when we're in Prestwick. The pub opened only this year and is named after David McIntyre, one of Scotland's leading aviation pioneers. He and the Marquis of Clydesdale established a flying school at Prestwick in 1933, which became an important training centre for RAF pilots in the second world war. McIntyre was also involved in the development of Prestwick into an international airport. There are many photos and old advertisements relating to the history of the area, including Woolworths, whose store used to be in this location.

A five-star view, with caveats…read more First off the Drift Inn is without a doubt the best place to eat and drink in Lamlash. We've tried the competition and frankly the Drift has the best beer and Scotch selection, food, and atmosphere. Inside it's a restaurant, outside it's a country pub with lots of well-spaced outdoor seating. It has the basics food-wise down pat. Huge fish and chips and excellent mussels - in the latter case just the right size between tasty and chewy. A great wine and beer selection and excellent service. The one down side was an overly-promised starter. Spending 15 quid on a few tiny bits of food artfully arranged stuck in the craw somewhat. But what the hell, they're nice people and the rest of it was superb.

It's in the lovely town of Lamlash and really easy to find. We parked along the road and then walked down as we were there quite early and it didn't open til midday. There's a beautiful view over the water to Holy Isle and you can get a ferry over if you're so inclined - we decided to just appreciate it from afar. The pub itself is kind of nautical/rugby themed and really cosy inside - there's a fireplace and lots of seating as well as some couches and a kids area. I ordered a bowl of Cullen Skink (Scottish haddock soup) as well as the Angler's Platter for one (Creeler's hot and cold smoked salmon, seafood and soft cheese mousse, fishcake and homemade bread). The soup was just delicious - I don't eat Cullen Skink enough and when I have one as good as this, I wonder why - thick, jam packed with fish and really tasty. I loved the platter too - the fish cake was the highlight for sure, but everything on it was so tasty and I loved how local it all was. Staff were friendly and welcoming, and we enjoyed grazing here for a while. They have a great booze selection but as I was driving I didn't have any - next time we visit I would definitely see about getting the bus or a taxi here from Brodick so we could get stuck into the gin! Note: they have gluten free bread, breadcumb and batters are available upon request.

I asked if they had any kind of specialty drink that they did, and he said no and then he paused and he said "well you could do Irn Bru and vodka." So I said "sure, I'll give it a try." The waiter was cool - attentive and friendly. I ordered the crab cakes as an appetizer. They were good. The consistency is a little different than what you would get in the states. I think there was more of whatever the binding agent was (flour and egg?) than the way I've had it back home so it was more cakey and held together better than the way I'm used to which falls apart easily. I had the steak pie which was delicious. The meat was tender and just fell apart. The veggie mix was excellent - carrots, snap peas and maybe parsnips. The snap peas or peas in the pod were absolutely perfectly prepared. They were hot throughout but still were crunchy and slightly sweet. I didn't finish my steak pie only because it was hearty and filling and I wanted to save room for dessert. And oh what a dessert! I hadn't heard of Jaffa cakes, so while I was imagining cake and ice cream like in the states, that was not what arrived! Jaffa cakes are like little wafer cookies with chocolate on one side. It was basically a sundae made with Irn Bru ice cream, chocolate syrup and Jaffa wafer cookies broken and arranged on top. I was the last customer to finish my food and next to last to be rung up. Unfortunately, the machine was having an issue and declining everything. They employed the number one IT recommendation to turn the machine off and turn it back on again. Problem solved, bills paid. I didn't catch the names, but these two who are the closing staff were so good-natured and funny, we were joking around, like we were all old friends! I had a great experience all the way around and highly recommend that you try it out. I look forward to the next time I visit the area and have a meal at The Ship.

What a little jewel I found!…read more The Mill Inn is located in Coulter 5 min down the road from Biggar and 45 min from Edinburgh. It is easy to find as it is pretty much the only restaurant/bar in that area. It also has its own beer garden and in the summer this must be a plus. I believe that this building was once an old Mill and you might think so from the name it got today :-) Inside the floor is covered with typical Scottish designed red carpet, dark furnishing, wooden benches and beams. There is no doubt the restaurant downstairs has its charms. On the other side of the room, away from the dining tables there is a small bar with lots of different whiskey choices. Upstairs you will find additional seating and a small whisky bar with lots of different whiskey's on offer and for sale. The most expensive one costs £1500 Highland Park and last week they sold a £3000 special edition of some sort. No worries, you can also buy affordable whiskey from well known brands. Our voucher deal offered a starter and main course for a very good price. We ordered Shrimp salad and baked brie as a starter. The brie was soft and filling (you get two pieces), served with cranberry sauce. There was no brie spared. As a main we ordered Chicken Fajitas and it came with 3 sauces (salsa, sour cream, guacamole). Not only this, the chicken was served still on a hot plate, sizzling in delicious spices hot and mild, garnished with peppers and onions and a delicious sauce of some sort, which made the taste even more delicious. We also decided on coffee and with it they served a small piece of fudge, which was such a nice gesture. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. It is a very busy place and best you book a table before turning up unannounced. I will be back ! Whoop

One of the worst dinner services I've had in a LONG time…read more The food was barely mediocre. My lemon sole, a special of the day, was utterly tasteless, and didn't have the slightest hint of lemon. Not even a lemon wedge. And it was raw in the middle. Yuck! The worst part of our experience was the absolutely horrendous service, which was so incredibly slow that it was obnoxious. Waitresses buzzed past our table in their hurry to other tables, while we sat for an eternity. The only explanation I can think of is that my husband is Black, and we've encountered this issue before at restaurants. In any case, the service was downright inexcusable. I wouldn't ever go back.
