When we went to The Vandy the other night for some cocktails, we knew that Soul Soup would be on the scene serving up 2 different soups for us to try (The High Life and Thai Me Up). The menu was posted on Angie's Insta page a few days in advance of the pop up (see photo of the menu) and I just knew we had to try them both! When we arrived and placed our cocktail orders, we also asked for a bowl of each of the soups to try and when they were brought out the table, they were piping hot and smelled so good! I was happy to know that rather than adding in the bacon to the High Life, they could serve it on the side so that my dining partner could enjoy the bacon while I just wanted to enjoy the soup with the pretzel bites no bacon! Two bowls of soup was a perfect amount for the 2 of us to share and when we were finished, Angie came out of the kitchen to meet some of the customers - it was so nice to meet Angie and she is seriously so friendly! The owners have every right in this great nation to take the position they have--and I have every right to decide that I won't return. But if they do, I believe those officers will still respond professionally and give them the respect and assistance that every person deserves. We were repeatedly told that they were. When the food came out, I asked twice more if the pita was gluten-free and was again told yes. We ate some of it based on those assurances. I finally went and asked another employee, who then told us that the pita DOES contain gluten. This is not a minor mistake for someone with celiac disease. We specifically disclosed the dietary restriction, repeatedly verified the food, and were given incorrect information multiple times before eating it. What makes this especially concerning is that The Fountain on Locust promotes itself as being allergy-friendly. If a restaurant is going to make that claim, staff need to understand food allergies and celiac disease and be able to accurately identify what is and is not safe. We would never have eaten the pita if we had been given correct information. After this experience, I would not trust this restaurant with a serious food allergy or celiac disease. Management needs to address its allergen procedures and staff training before someone gets seriously hurt.
