Lago is our favorite restaurant in Newport, VT and has been for years. We celebrated our 51st anniversary at Lago Trattoria last night, and as always, were blown away by the meal. For starters we had the Tuna Carpaccio - an excellent combination of crispy fried wonton, seared tuna, mixed greens with a perfect wasabi sauce - not too hot and not too mild. I had the Ravioli Burrata which are the best ravioli I have ever had. The sundried tomato, pea pods and mushrooms were a perfect complement to the large, well-filled ravioli. My husband almost always orders the Frutti di Mare and is never disappointed - plenty of seafood and a nice garlicky, spicy red sauce. For dessert I had the tiramisu, a Lago staple and always excellent; and my husband tried the Limoncello cake which, despite the fact that he usually does not like citrus flavored desserts, was declared excellent. Completed a trip to Lagos for dinner with the family. Started off with my daughter noticing that the table was very sticky. Sticky to the point you could feel your skin being stuck to the table and made a noise when it finally separated from the table. When the drinks arrived at the table, my daughter's water had a hair in it and the milk that came with my coffee curdled when I poured some in my coffee. When I brought the milk to the waitress' attention, she responded by saying that whole milk will curdle in hot coffee. Never in my life have I had whole milk curdle in coffee unless it was spoiled milk. The replacement coffee and milk had the same result - the milk got chunky when I poured it in the coffee. Food arrived. My daughters Atlantic Cod tasted bad - it had a spoiled fish taste to it. When we mentioned the taste to the waitress, she gave no reaction. Wife ordered the ravioli with chicken. When delivered to the table, the waitress spilled sauce from the dish onto the table in front of my wife. The spill wasn't noticed by the waitress because she was busy spilling my dish onto my wife. My wife stated that the chicken tasted off, as if it was spoiled. My dish tasted good; I got the meatballs. The sauce from the dish was spilled on my wife's shirt and pants. The waitress seemed unfazed and offered to get some extra cloth napkins because they barely soaked up liquid. Yes, she offered to get extra of an item that was poor at wiping things up. She also returned with a wet, dirty cloth from the kitchen to help clean my wife's shirt. We have eaten there many times and the food is usually pretty damn good. This time, the chicken and fish tasted bad, like they were past their expiration date. No attempt was made to rectify. I mentioned the taste of the fish and chicken to the waitress, but got no reaction from her. It was as if she did not hear or care. Felt bad about leaving a small tip, but the amount was justified. Can't believe I am agreeing with another review of Lagos, but the dinner on this night makes Hoagies taste and look great in comparison. read more

This is located on the corner of Main and Coventry Streets. This Italian restaurant has been recommended by the locals for many years. They are open 7 days a week from 5-9. Reservations are recommended cuz, as we found out, it gets crowded early. Sandy was our server, who also doubled as a barkeep. I felt they were short of staff. Sandy refuted that. Let me say the food was great but the service was just above average. Sandy was super friendly but I feel we could have been "pampered " more.... yes, there was a table of 14 but , Believe me they were short staffed. I had gnocchi and my lady friend had lasagna with two home-recipied meatballs. As mentioned excellent. I couldn't finish my entree. Very filling. The bread and olive oil concoction were excellent. I love the food here. So hard to find authentic Italian restaurants up here in the Kingdom. HOWEVER, We made a 5:00 reservation for Saturday night. It was windy, rainy, and cold outside when we arrived at 4:50. We waited outside in the weather until well past 5:00 for them to open the doors, which were LOCKED!!! I do not recommend making a 5:00 reservation. They should not even be offered if the restaurant is not ready for guests at 5:00. read more

Nice cool little joint on main street Newport. Chill joint, had a baked gnocchi dish that was pretty good. Manhattan was good too. The waitress/bartender gave me some feeble excuse for not being able to turn off the Red Sox and put on the US men's soccer match WC qualifier on the bar TV. She mumbled some nonsense about the owner not wanting it off, though, the owner wasn't at the bar and no one around the bar was watching TV at all. Lovely town, but food here is overpriced. Passing though town... came here for dinner. Waitress was very nice. Ordered the Caprese appetizer. Was good but certainly not worth the $15+ that we paid. We each decided on the appetizers as a main dish. The meatballs came out lukewarm in the center and as we were not in the mood for food poisoning we sent them back. They offered to replace them but we were paranoid. The antipasto portion was generous but the cheese was so strong that it left a bad aftertaste. They provided a pasta dish to replace the meatballs which was ok but nothing to write home about. Three stars because I think the restaurant was trying to 'work' with us but certainly this was not worth almost $60 (before tip). read more

I have been meaning to write this review for almost a year now. I got married last summer in the peak of COVID (only parents and siblings in attendance!), and we needed to figure out what to do for food. My husband's family is Italian, so I thought it would be nice to pay homage to his roots and serve an Italian meal. As the only Italian restaurant (that I am aware of) in this area, my husband and I went to dinner here to give their food a trial run. We ordered a few different dishes and enjoyed them all! We told our waitress that we were hoping to place a large order with them for our wedding and she had the owner (Who is also the chef) come out to our table and chat with us, which was really nice! As we drew closer to the wedding, we worked with the owner to come up with a menu that would work for 8 people. He was very honest with us throughout the process, and advised us expertly on what foods would be best and which would not, considering he was going to have to prepare it several hours ahead of time, and we were going to have to pick it up and transport it. We ended up going with: Tomato and Mozzarella, one other app that I can't remember at the moment, Boar shoulder and herbs slow cooked with rigatoni and red sauce, stuffed chicken breasts, rack of lamb, mixed greens and a limoncello cake. My mom went and picked it up from the restaurant before the wedding and he even gave us his actual pots/pans and container with the food in it, which he said to just return the next day! He left some stuff uncooked so it wouldn't spoil, so that night all our parents had to do was pop the dishes in the oven and dinner was served! Considering the fact that it had to be prepared so far in advance and transported, it was DELICIOUS and I felt like we were actually out to eat at the restaurant. There was plenty of food for everyone and we even had left overs. The owner was accommodating, pleasant to work with, and very kind! The only thing that salvaged this review from one star was the quality and presentation of the food. I had been here once before a few years ago, and decided to give it another shot after a lackluster impression the first time. On the "money" side, watch your charge slips. I paid for the meal with a business charge card that has all the signed slips matched to the actual transaction on the statement. On the slip that was clearly marked, I was actually charged an extra dollar. Not a big deal, right? Just a dollar. Who really checks their credit slips to their statements? But if this is a systemic problem by the restaurant or its servers, in the course of an evening or few days, an extra dollar on every slip can add up to 30, 40, 50 dollars a night, clear. And, really, who would complain about just an extra dollar, right? Could just be a simple mistake, absolutely, but I don't want to be bothered to have to make sure what I am buying is actually what I pay. The only thing worse than buying a 16 dollar hamburger, is paying 17 dollars for it. I won't be back, and would not recommend at all. read more

Had I commented the last time we visited I would have given the place 4 stars, but since 3.5 isn't available, I'll have to go with 3, since it's the 3rd time we've been there. The good. Lobster Mac and Cheese was better than expected. Not a baked oily mess. It was enjoyable. My wife loves the martinis, which appear to be consistent. The bad: Carbonara which was far from consistent. Had it last time and it was perfect. This time someone decided making black pepper the main ingredient. Customers like consistency, so based on this, we'll never order it again. Caesar salad. Would it be so difficult to cut it up? Serving lettuce in its natural form is just a pain. I wanted to send it back and have it tossed in a blender. Overall for the area it's a decent place. There's no Italian competition and for the most part the food is good. Just don't expect to tell your friends about a great find. read more

I asked for anchovies on it, they provided about 8 small, white, tasteless anchovies and charged me $5.00. The crouton's were stale. The lasagna was mushy - overcooked noodles and tasteless cheese mixture. The tomato sauce on the sweet side. Nona's meatballs were like saw dust. Too much bread crumbs, very dry and unseasoned. The chef always seems very "serious" looking when you see him but when you taste the food you will see why. He takes this business very serious. We eat here 3-4 times per month and always have a great meal. Chef Frank Richardi does great authentic Italian food here in Newport since 2001. His house made pastas, always fresh fish, and great cuts of meat never leave you hungry or wanting more. The several cozy dining rooms and great bar all give you a view to the central open kitchen where you can see Frank and Jon do their magic. Service is excellent, prices reasonable. Don't expect chicken parm here. The food and restaurant is way classier than that. Veal medallions with pappardelle pasta, rack of lamb, Bolognese, Fruiti di mare are the dishes you'll find and enjoy. Great wine selection as well! read more

Worst dinning experience ever! Food was good, service was terrible and by terrible I mean terrible. It took 2 hours to get 2 salads, an order of potstickers and steamed clams. Then I had to ask twice for the bill, gave them an AMEX card and that turned into a whole thing at which point the owner called the Newport Police on me. The owner seemed off his rocker, which is too bad, because the food was good. When I asked the cops if the owner was a wack job they all seemed to nod their heads in agreement. Atmosphere was welcoming and slightly cool in the restaurant. It was really cold out, so could have been warmer. Pretzel app and pickled vegatables as two separate appetizers. The picked veggies were very very tart, probably wouldn't get them again. I also got the tuna carpaccio, which was tasty. For dinner i had a salad with brussel spouts, roasted beets, arugula, vermont chevre and some type of lemon vinaigrette, salad was good. Friend got the VT burger and said it was excellent. We were told this place had great Italian food while staying in town. It was a great recommendation! The wine was great and reasonably priced. We also got the caprese salad, a regular salad, and three different entrees. WIth the reasonable prices, we assumed it had small portions. We were wrong: the caprese salad was the hugest caprese I have ever seen! We all loved our meals. The only bad thing was we continued to travel and couldn't eat our left overs:( My only advice is to not over-order as they are sizable portions. Great service as well! read more
