Got into Copenhagen late so was limited in bakeries that were open after dinner time. This location of Lagkagenhuset near City Hall Square was within easy walking distance. Most of the baked goods were sold, so asked the attendant what popular item I should get. Probably wasn't a great question since most of the items were gone, but suggested a Danish with almond filling covered in chocolate ( Gammeldags Julebolle) for $4.89 (converted). The girls at the counter were friendly and efficient but our coffee came up in to go paper cups (I could clearly see they had mugs). I asked again and said that I ordered for "here" .. the girl said that their dishwasher was broke (but there were plenty of clean mugs on the espresso machine) apparently hand washing isn't an option in our modern times. My favorite Danish bakery, located near the city center. I couldn't get enough of their Kanelstang (Danish cinnamon twist), so we went everyday we were there. Their Kanelstang is just a superior version of any cinnamon twist/roll I have had in the US. On a rainy day, their seating area is packed but if you are able to get a seat, you can enjoy their complementary wifi and warm atmosphere. The previous customers left the table with crumbs and it wasn't cleaned before we got there. However, it wasn't a big deal, especially knowing that they were busy. We were able to clean it up using some wet napkins, accessed from the bathrooms without trouble. Overall, their service was quick and hospitable. I would rate: 4.5/5, rounded up to 5! read more

Excellent bakery for if you're looking for fresh, genuine Danish pastries, bread, and a cup of coffee. Heads up though, most of the labels will be of the Danish name and without descriptions. This location is in the block next to Copenhagen's Rådhuspladsen (City Hall Square), which is in turn right next to the Tivoli Gardens (amusement park). Basically, this location is a 5-minute walk if you've gone to visit Tivoli. Some highlights of the pastries and bread, and what they were. Spandauer is the name for what we know of as the Danishes/Danish pastry, romkugler are Danish rum balls, træstammer are truffle logs, are flødeboller are chocolate marshmallow puffs. Meanwhile, christianshavnertærte/christianshavnertærte is hazelnut cake with strawberry cream, direkstorsnegl is essentially a cinnamon roll, gateau marcel/petit gateau marcel are chocolate mousse cakes, and kartoffelkage is a potato cake that is a dessert and doesn't actually have any potatoes (except maybe potato flour). For some of the more savory pastries, tebirkes is poppy seed rolls, and frøsnappers are poppy and sesame seed twists. Lagkagehuset (translated to Cake House) is a Danish chain bakery and coffee shop whose first location opened in 1991, and now has a location in London as well as New York on top of its dozens of shops across Denmark. From what was available when I was there, they have a wide variety of bread loaves, rolls, and buns. This was especially exciting for me when our group came here because this gave us a chance to try Danish Rye (a kind of sourdough). Given that they have so many kinds of bread, it's a given that they also sold a selection of sandwiches as well as pizza. That they also served a variety of hot drinks, mostly coffee and hot chocolate, which made it a very convenient late breakfast/light lunch/brunch stop. I spent this lunch light munching on a jordbærkage (Strawberry Cake) was delicious, and that is honestly one of the best choices I've made in my life. I miss that cake so much right now. And I missed it so much that, when I couldn't manage to revisit this location (which was close to where we were living), I found the location they had in Copenhagen Airport and staked it out. Overall, would HIGHLY recommend. This would be one of my need-to-stop-by-again spots in the case I go back to Denmark. read more

The pastries are a MUST. As a solo female traveler, this place was a must try. I love checking out different cafes and shops that are clearly local hits. Clearly a local chain but a definite must try. I stopped by before closing for a coffee and asked the barista to fill a large bag with her favorite pastries that she recommended. I bought about 15 pastries total and flew back to the US with them to hand off to my coworkers to try. Big hits seemed to be the circular chocolate one and the ones similar to cinnamon roles with glazing on top. Coffee was great and the pastries traveled well back to the US. Since I was in the land of the greatest pastries, I had to go to a bakery at least once...everyday. I was told I needed to try Lagkaheguset which is a chain but is very good. The item I had to try was the direktørsnegl. There are 2 Lagkagehuset locations within walking distance from my hotel and pretty much any landmark in the city. So, grabbing a pastry became a daily routine. What I've tried include snegl (cinnamon roll with icing), choco croissant, kanelstang, direktørsnegl (cinnamon roll with chocolate), spandauer with cream, cafe latte, and varm chokolade (hot Belgian chocolate). The snegl, direktørsnegl, and hot chocolate are my favorites from here. The pastries are flaky and aren't heavy. The snegl is perfect. The direktørsnegl is a little bit on the very sweet side. The hot chocolate is dark, rich and absolutely delicious. They do take credit cards and no, you don't need to know your PIN. Just tell them it's a credit card and don't require a PIN. This location is close to Radhuspladsen/ City Hall/ Hans Christian Andersen statue. Although there is a location a few steps from those landmarks. This one is more quiet. read more

Lagkagehuset (say that three times fast!) is a famous Danish chain with over 75 locations in Denmark, as well as now the UK and New York. This particular one is located in the Hovedbanen (Copenhagen Central Station). A very nice station that is busy, with more than 80k people a day passing through. Tucked in a corner spot near an entrance, Lagkagehuset is hard to miss. Seeing all of the breads and pastries through the window made me want to stop in. Going in, I had no idea of the store and it's history, I just knew I wanted to try some Danish sweets. I asked the girl at the counter what her favorite thing was and she said said "kanelsnegl" (cinnamon snail roll), so that's what I did. Surprisingly, some of the things here (like the kanelsnegl) were reasonable ($3.50), but some things were quite high (a tart for $16). I must admit the fruit tarts and cakes looked absolutely gorgeous. I now kick myself that we didn't get one to try. The bread also looked pretty good, but I wasn't in the position to buy a loaf and carry it around sightseeing all day, nor able to sit and eat a whole one in one shot. I would have to say overall, the experience was simply average. Nothing overwhelming, nothing disappointing. Nothing eye widening though. Afterwards, I kept noticing these stores around town, and I tried a different location and different food. The service was great here, the counter girls really friendly and informative. This is a chain but has legit coffee and beautiful pastries and bread. They also serve delicious sandwiches and pizza that they put in the panini press. One of the best things they serve is basically avocado toast with arugula and a soft boiled egg on it. Beautiful and tasty. You can find the stores all over town, including the train station and TI (less charming outposts and more limited menu than the other shops, though). The one thing my friend told me before we went to Denmark was how much he missed the bakeries and going to them in the mornings to get fresh pastries/breads and a cup of coffee. He said it was his favorite thing about growing up there and I completely and totally get it. It's all SO good and warm and wonderful, and it's something I wish I could eat all the time. The staff isn't very friendly (at all really, but it may have been because I'm American and spoke no Danish?) but they do have delicious breads and pastries. I agree with another reviewer that said service is abrupt and unfriendly, even when they called your number. I had questions about the different pastries (I had no idea what they were and couldn't read the label) and was kind of met with frustration. Even when my friend asked the same questions in fluent Danish, he got the brush off too. I'm not sure why they won't take 30 seconds to explain it? We usually grabbed a few rolls (with butter, of course) and then picked a random pastry to share that looked delicious. Despite the poor service, there was literally nothing we tried that wasn't tasty! So, you really can't go wrong regardless of which thing you point at. The coffee was over-priced in my opinion and I highly recommend grabbing coffee at your hotel if you can, but it seemed to be expensive (like everything) everywhere else. Arriving earlier than the opening time of 07h30, the Danish Summer never really seeing the sun 'set' in favor of about five hours of twilight blue before it becomes light again, it was in the street with several youths still wrapping up their previous night that four patrons waited patiently for two clerks to finish stocking shelves and open the doors, the first trio opting for just one item each while the order that followed entailed six sweets and two savories, plus an unremarkable Americano that will set guests back about $6USD for a large. Offering all the same items as CPH and then some, the majority of this larger collection consisting of Breads, Rolls and full-size Tarts, it was after some debate that items were boxed or plated, first bites of the Seed-coated Groft Speltstykke showing tangy Sourdough with a `springy consistency despite the visual lack of air bubbles while the shredded Carrots in Grov Gulerodsbolle added a touch of sweetness and moisture that saw the Roll eat like Ciabatta. Eventually deciding to try bites of each item, a 'some now and some for later' plan that in reality saw the good ones eaten in their entirety and leftovers from subpar selections discarded, both the Rhubarb and Carrot Muffins showed fairly well, though not as good as the Banana from the prior night, the former in need of a little less sweetness while the latter was nice and moist, though the spices got lost in the Frosting. Having already tasted both the Custard Danish and Cinnamon Swirl, though it was indeed tempting to see if either was even better straight out the oven, it was instead with the Strawberry Jam Danish and an Apple Cake that the tasting moved forward, the laminated Dough virtually indistinguishable from the first visit with a good flavor to the Strawberries while the "Cake" was actually more of a high-walled miniature Pie with a buttery Shell and soft-set center full of sliced Apples and even more Butter plus a touch of Cinnamon. One again setting aside the famous Marsmallows, an item titled Romkugel described by the clerk as her favorite item at Lagkagehuset decided upon instead, suffice it to say that fans of Dark Rum may be better suited for this than someone who rarely drinks hard liquor, especially with a far better Chocolate-fix found in the Souffle Cake with a Brownie base beneath creamy Mousse, though for most it could probably do without the sour Gooseberry. read more

I really enjoyed eating Lagkagehuset's baked goods so much that I came back here a few times during my short stay in Copenhagen. I've tried a few different Danish and my favorite was the one with the chocolate on top (see the picture). I tried their salad for lunch, which was "A-OK"....The red beets salad wasn' t the most exciting salad but it tasted healthy, lol. I would definitely go for the baked goods instead, you can't go wrong. This is a good inexpensive place to take a break or have lunch.
