This is both a bakery and pastry shop, and they do both well. In the mornings, it's a popular stop for locals and tourists alike. The cakes tend to come out later in the day. I got a spandauer (a square pastry with a center well filled with custard), a rhubarb croissant, and a sakura cherry mini-cake. Both pastries were flakey and delicious. Anderson has a great back story. A Japanese baker came to CPH in the 1950s, learned to make wienerbrød, and took his skill home to Japan. Now he has bakeries in Japan, China and Indonesia. There was a ton of seating but it was tricky to get seats and people were posted up to work (they have wifi)! In terms of food they have a great selection of pastries, sandwiches and desserts. We tried the croissant (really good), cardamom bun (underbaked, not my fav), and the Christmas bun (interesting flavors a little too sweet for me). A friend recommended I go to Andersen, and it didn't disappoint. There is great seating and the like moves quite quickly. My favorite part was embracing the unique flavor combinations and done well. A Japanese owned and run bakery making Danish specialities?!?! Count me in! This place was perfect for me because they make mini sized versions of the pastries so that we could try a lot at one time. There are not many gluten free options. There was a loaf of low gluten bread for 46DKK which is reasonable. The oat latte was okay. I expected more from the matcha latte as it tasted more like milk than the earthy flavor of matcha. The space to enjoy your pastries (they have savory sandwiches too!) is wonderful. We like the upstairs next to the bookcase. More privacy there if you do not want to be bothered by all the conversations that can occur with the long cue of this bakery. Andersen has an interesting story. It is originally a bakery chain from Japan, where it has been incredibly successful. Having been to the original Andersen bakeries in Japan, I was excited to try a Danish location. Unfortunately, it was thoroughly disappointing. We tried several pastries including the croissant, coconut croissant, spandauer, and cinnamon bun. The only one we could finish was the cinnamon bun, which was OK but nothing special. The croissants and spandauer were dry and bland. There are too many other good bakeries in Copenhagen to make this worth a visit. read more
