I hate to echo the sentiments of the other reviewers, but their feedback regarding Cheryl's communication is accurate. Her team did okay work coming to our yard every 2 weeks for about $85, but once we had them come to do our backyard (remove weeds, plant grass seed) they charged us $700 (we tipped $40) for about 4 hours work, including ripping out 3 plants, mowing and removing about 1/10th cubic yard of gravel. They brought 1 cubic yard of topsoil instead of the 10 cubic yards needed (we would have paid the difference had they let us know the correct amount). The grass came in patchy, even though we followed their instructions with watering, and it's sitting two inches lower than the rest of our yard. They also didn't seed about 1/4 of the lawn, where they removed the gravel. I asked Cheryl repeatedly to get the job done right and she offered to give me free labor to redo the topsoil but her team does not have a truck to transport it. She refused to refund about 50% of the $740 job, so I'm filing a dispute with PayPal, and we had to let them go. read more

Labat's has been over to my house in north Oakland twice now, and coming again tomorrow, to trim back bushes, trees, ivy and just general monthly maintenance including removing our large, old citrus tree waste. Cheryl is a character but honestly, I like her. She's accommodated my schedule changes, requests for the ability to pay online rather than with a check and even come over and looked over the fence to give me an estimate. The guys are super efficient and we get *a lot* of compliments on our yard, especially right after service from Labat's. This is the third company I've tried to get service from and Labat's shows up on time, performs really great service and does it at really reasonable costs. read more

I have had Lebats out several times. They have done a great job for me each time. They are fast and the results have exceeded expectations and at a reasonable price. However, it has been difficult to schedule as I have to leave messages and follow up. I needed my palm trees to be trimmed at a home in Walnut Creek, CA. We called Cheryl the owner of Labat's Tree Care and her crew of idiots came out to trim 3 palm trees. It was the worst expeerince you could imagine. They used spikes to climb the trees which is against normal practice and cut into one of the palm trees so severely that it now looks like someone vandalized the tree. I called Cherly the owner and she was so rude and told me it was not a big deal. Then Labat's had the nerve to put a lien on my property becuase i would not pay $700 for their destructive work. Can you believe it? I am now going to take legal action. NEVER CALL THEM AND STAY AWAY...DANGER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! read more

7/30/15: Today, Labat's owner Cheryl Cole texted me several times this evening ranting about how I have lied, did not give her a chance to respond, how she has been busy planning a party for her daughter, et al ad nauseum. On the contrary, everything I have posted is the truth, and Cheryl has had almost two weeks to respond. She went so far as to say that God is going to punish me for my egregious sins and that I am the sole reason she now has to close her business. Leaving God out of it for the moment, a brief look at Labat's Yelp and Google reviews reveal that I am just one of many of Labat's dissatisfied customers who have had to deal with the inconvenience of Labat's shoddy business practices, poor customer service, inferior product, and lack of professionalism. Cheryl was very clear in her texts that she has no intention of correcting her mistake, so once again, Labat's Tree Care has created not only a mess, but a dangerous situation which is in violation of county law as well as Penal Code Section 374. Here is a Google review for Labat's in which Cheryl accuses another person of lying: JW 2 months ago- Labats may be very good at cutting down trees... Complaint has been filed with the BBB: Labat's Tree Care 1330 Veale Ave Martinez CA 94553-2065 Complaint Description: Labats dumped wood chips that're in direct violation of the oral agreement that the chips must be safe for dogs; ignoring requests to remove pile. I have received a few truckloads of wood chips from Labat's over the course of the past 6+ years and they know I can only accept chips that are safe for dogs. Non-toxicity and lack of thorns, stickers, berries, acorns, etc...are essential to ensuring dogs safety and good health. I've had many conversations with Labat's owner Cheryl, stressing the importance of the above criteria. My requirements were crystal clear and Cheryl is well aware of them. Labat's business practices have gone downhill over the years - I have recently had to turn away their drivers who showed up on my property unannounced (no phone call warning me of their arrival) who had truckloads of wood chips that were unsafe for dogs due to one or more of the reasons cited above. During the week of 7/13/15, out of nowhere, a Labat's truck pulled up my drive. Once again, there had been no phone call from Cheryl alerting me to expect a delivery of wood chips. I was away from the property on business and was called back to deal with the situation. It tool me no more than 10 minutes to arrive. Upon arrival, I asked the driver what kind of chips were in the truck. He said they were CLEAN CHIPS FROM A PINE TREE AND THEY WERE SAFE FOR DOGS !!! From what I could see, they looked like good chips, so he began dumping the load. All of a sudden, after dumping a good 8 cubic yards of wood chips, a huge amount of greenery came pouring out of the truck all over the existing pile of chips and spilling out onto the berm which borders the creek. This greenery was comprised of individual leaves, twigs and branches which were laden with leaves. Turns out that all of this greenery was from a Monkey Pine, and each of the 1000s of tiny leaves on this tree has a needle like spire at one end that is clearly dangerous for dogs.To allow dogs to play and walk on a this harmful greenery is akin to allowing your dogs to do the same in a giant deep field of straight pins ! We immediately put a stop to the dump, and sent the driver away. (At this point in my BBB complaint, I list the same questions that can be seen in my earlier Yelp review. We were first introduced to LaBats Tree Service many years ago from our neighbor. His 5 large oaks line our two properties. We love the oaks especially from our deck and family room. We consider their upkeep our responsibility, as much as our neighbor's. The "tree" guys are awesome to watch-very professional and safety minded. Silly to say, but they remind us of monkeys, as they swing from tree to tree. Quite amazing indeed, as they make this difficult task look easy. More importantly they are experts as they tackle such large trees and have done exceptional work through the years to ensure our trees continue to be healthy. When the opportunity arose to have some trees removed, along with other trimming from our parents' property, we called LaBats. We were getting ready to sell the home and handle the family's estate. LaBats came to our rescue!! Cheryl and guys took on the task. This included irrigation of the front lawn, weeding, removing a large oak, a fallen maple in the creek, along with thinning many other trees/brush to give the property a more saleable clean look. They helped us with some basic maintenance until the house was sold. We met many of the workers during that time and each were hard workers, knowledgeable of their job, cleaned up any mess of debris afterward and were friendly and considerate. So, who did we call when we decided to work on our own home to go drought tolerant in our large corner lot???........LaBats, of course. A large job (for residential) that included removal of 4 older trees, removal of all of the lawn, plus the very large roots and stumps. Between our landscape designer's plans and suggestions from Cheryl, it came together. All hands on deck on this project, so we got to see many of the guys. They did the whole package, including irrigation, planting and even the fencing. All were great; a special thanks to Isreal, Antonio, Brad and Bruce for their extra special attention to details. To respond to comments mentioned by others: We've gotten to know LaBats during the years and will say that sometimes it has been difficult to get a firm time schedule from them, which can be a bit frustrating. (scheduling between government jobs vs residential, plus manpower is probably at times the problem, we figured) However, we have seen them improve in that area. Their office staff is very helpful, professional and friendly. We appreciate their good customer service skills, as when we have had questions, they have gotten back to us promptly. Yes, we got wood chips from them; a win win, in our opinion. We needed them for mulch and they saved by not dumping. It turned out we definitely got "way" more than needed, but a few "free" signs in the neighborhood and my neighbors took the balance. So everyone got something on that deal. Our yard is lovely....neighbors even come by and comment...and we are happy to report that we are receiving a $1,000 rebate for "losing our lawn" a program through the Contra Costa Water District. Labat's tree service was highly recommended to us, and we are very pleased with the accuracy of the estimate including the calculated time it would take to complete the job.The price was very fair and the workers very showed the up most courtesy. Then they followed up a day or two later for some the tree branches that fell in my neighbors yard. Communication was "Eh" via Smith app. Although when communication occurred it was respectful. Delayed on expected arrival to complete the job by 1 week, didn't complete the job the 1st visit and took another 4 days to finally complete the job. I would have expected a better response time from for the actual job to be performed. 2 stars instead of 1 because of the respectful response from the office. Prices are competitive amongst other 5 quotes, but can be debatable if you are in a furry to get the job done. read more

We have used Labats for our twice a month yard maintenance since 2007. We are very happy with the quality of their work. The guys do a great job with the edging and mowing, and anytime I have ever asked them to do anything extra, they are happy to do it. The monthly maintenance charge is very reasonable, and my favorite thing about the company is thay they actually come on the day they are scheduled! in the six years we have used them, i think they have only not shown up 2 or 3 times. We have also had a few trees planted by Labats. I thought that their fee for tree planting was a bit high, but I didn't shop around, so maybe it is the going rate. And the trees are all healthy and straight, so it was worth it. Cheryl, the owner, has always been extremely helpful. Anytime I have ever needed anything, she makes sure it gets done. read more

After reading quite a few negative reviews, I would like to mention that Cheryl and her crew did some extensive tree removal work for me in 2012 and I was satisfied overall. Yes, it's been a few years. I just called her and left a message because I need some more tree removal work, and I was happy with their work the last time, and decided to be a repeat customer. My experience the last time is as follows: After verifying that I had a permit, they removed 4 large redwoods, an oak, and a willow tree. They were the only company that would guarantee in writing repairs if any sprinkler pipe or risers were damaged and, fortunately, none were-- front or back. The "tree climber, stump dropper" was very skilled. They skirted about 8 additional redwoods. I had one issue when the work was completed. When loading the debris in the chipper, they stained my driveway. Cheryl responded in a timely manner, bringing a crew with some concrete cleaning solution. They were unable to remove the tree stains completely, but a few months later there was no trace of the stains. Their prices are the best around and I have no problem recommending them for tree removal work. read more

i responded to a free woodchip ad a couple weeks later they show up with a truck I asked them to make sure that they only got the woodchips in my yard and not the neighbors drive way, then they guy dumped a huge load of woodchips and dirt and extra branches and got it ALL over my neighbors drive way. then I tried to call the company to have them fix the issue but just ended up with more problems. now im forced to call a company and have to pay 300$ to have it removed. read more

As new homeowners, we were referred to Labat's Tree Service and also found them on Angie's List. Our property needed a lot of work done to cut down trees that were either leaning towards the house (huge pine) to clearing a steep hillside of not very healthy pines, eucalyptus and many other dead trees. They were very methodical and extremely meticulous to ensure that the tree limbs and stumps were brought down the hill by a pulley system. The whole crew, led by Antonio (who works just as hard as the others), were cooperative and receptive to changes we wanted to make during the progress (without an extra charge). We hired them a few weeks later to create a fire safe barrier to our almost 2 acres. They treated us like family and we felt the same. A pleasure to work with.
