The ignorant reviewers commenting poorly on these aspects clearly have no place reviewing this or other Mexican restaurants. I honestly think they see 4.5 stars on yelp and expect Bobby Flay to own the restaurant or something equally as idiotic. Out of the 5 or 6 Mexican places I have tried in Billings this is far and away the best. Service is friendly and fast. Prices are extremely reasonable. The food was excellent and authentic. Great hole in the wall for an out of towner. To describe La Tinga in few words: Authentic - Well Priced - Fast - Good Ole Mexican Cookin. I got the chicken and potato burritos with a couple tamales. If the owner asks you if you want the burrito "hot" - believe her! undoubtedly the meal was hot but still fantastic. Tamales came in green chili or mole shredded chicken. Prices are very reasonable (1-1.50 per taco and 1.50 for rice and beans) I have not been for breakfast, but will make it a stop. I think it is only open for breakfast and lunch. We were very disappointed in this restaurant. After reading reviews we were expecting a great experience. The lunch menu was very limited. The service was friendly but minimal. The food was not well prepared or presented ...just the basics. It was very much self service. The iced tea was terrible . The decor was barebones and moderately clean. bIt was cheap.. that's the best I can say for it . If you have a hankering for a Mexican food I. BIllings, there are many other options. Amazing experience from the moment we walked in the door! The owner was so lovely and sweet. My husband, who considers Taco Bell authentic, was amazed at how good the chorizo breakfast burritos are! I was driving through Billings and found La Tinga on Yelp. It was just as good as everyone said it was. I got the special, which was 2 ground beef tacos with avocado, beans and rice. I first want to say that the owner is a very nice and welcoming person and I would give her 5 stars but the food was really bad. everything was reheated and some what cold. I had a carne asada taco as well as a tinga taco. the meat to the carne taco was grayish and all of the meat had a weird funk to it. the nachos were stale plus the chips were cut into small frito shaped chips. not the best for nachos in my opinion. the salsa was more like a hot sauce but had good heat. I just want to say that I have never written a review about a restaurant but felted compelled to after leaving. La Tinga is a unique and charming Mexican diner that exudes the warmth and confidence of the owner herself, who creates an atmosphere of a home kitchen. The texture and flavorful dishes were handed down by many generations, and you can taste the history. The corn tortillas are the small traditional ones found in the small authentic diners found in places like Los Angeles. This is an important stand-out feature for anyone who desires Mexican food that doesn't have that weird, corporate blandness found at places like Taco John's. However, it is still a diner, so please bus your own table, and don't cry just because the salsa and forks are 10 or 15 feet from your table...get some exercise! I have always enjoyed the slight variation in flavor that invariably comes from traditional home-cooking methods. In particular, I recommend the chorizo because the dish is a perfectly blended combination of cactus and mushrooms, cheese and eggs. Oh yeah, and ask for some queso fresca with your bean burrito; it's divine with avocado and salsa. The beans are prepared use a traditional, home-cooked method, which really took me back to the days of comiamos con mi tia. (The beautiful and luscious plants add to this sensation, too.) As a diner, one should observe that the owner's resources are heavily invested in the final result of nostalgia-inducing flavors, so please don't hold the dishware and other trivia to the same expectations placed on corporate hotel restaurants! La Tinga gets a five-star diner rating for daring to be La Tinga fully, and without compromise. read more

Chicken tinga and carne asada taco plus fried beans were great- cooked fresh and excellent taste. Another in my party had a bean and cheese burrito and said it was great too. This restaurant is a hole in the wall-type but was clean. Restroom was very clean too. There's not a lot of room in the place, so you can see stacked up dirty dishes- but surfaces were clean - counter and tables. Evelyn is so friendly and treats you like family. This place is legit. I highly recommend getting two burritos (carne asada and chicken Tanga). The food is slightly messy and bursting with flavor, just as authentic Mexican food should be.
