So, before breakfast commenced and the coffee from Chiapas was poured for those attending, we opened the box to discover the colorful mix she had chosen. The flaky brown and tan biscuits were the first plate we tried with our homemade strawberry jam and cream cheese. I tasted mine plain at first to get a sense of the composition. The resounding taste of butter in the near bread told me of the quality was on par with any I had enjoyed before. Biscuits are not difficult to make, but doing so consistently is important. Then we tasted the dark brown gingerbread pigs, known as "puerquitos", which were gloriously fresh with a dusting of confectionery sugar. I was impressed again and the subtle taste of piloncillo found its way into every taste. While it's mildly unfair to review a place based solely on its takeout, El Fenix made a very good impression on me, and I look forward to visiting in the near future.

The selection of tasty treats is endless, anything from cookies to "empanadas" and everything in between. I really like the diagonal cut sweet bread with pink frosting, I've been getting that since I was little and enjoy it every time. I tried the chocolate cupcake with the white swirl on top, their take on a very popular pastry you'll find in most grocery stores and really enjoyed it. It was nice and soft full of flavor, enjoyed every bite. They did great justice to the classic, will be back for more. Their traditional Mexican sweet bread is good as well, the "polvorones," conchas and others. The only thing I noticed is the variety of concha flavors were only chocolate, I prefer the ones that have vanilla flavor on top. They also have about ten coolers, five with cakes and the rest with drinks including milk, soft drinks, juices and more. A great variety of stuff. Everything is priced slightly higher than most but still okay. Will definitely be stopping by again. *I do heat up every piece of bread I eat for about 4 seconds in the microwave, except for cake

This is a business we had heard of in Reynosa and they have now moved their bakery to the U.S. The bread is sold by the pound. It's around $5 and change for the pound. Now, be careful...it adds up quickly. Their main attraction is their "conchas." They are baked fresh all day and both times we've visited, they are nice and warm. They go fast so hurry... The place is very nice. Most bakeries we visit are old, dirty, run down, outdated, etc. But not this one. Loved the charm and decor which makes the visit more appealing. Last but not least, their taste is great! That's the main reason why we came back for a second time. The taste makes up for the above normal prices. Give them a try when you're in the San Juan area.
