My daughter went out early this morning and returned with a box of baked goods and pastries from El Fenix. So, before breakfast commenced and the coffee from Chiapas was poured for those attending, we opened the box to discover the colorful mix she had chosen. The flaky brown and tan biscuits were the first plate we tried with our homemade strawberry jam and cream cheese. I tasted mine plain at first to get a sense of the composition. The resounding taste of butter in the near bread told me of the quality was on par with any I had enjoyed before. Biscuits are not difficult to make, but doing so consistently is important. Then we tasted the dark brown gingerbread pigs, known as "puerquitos", which were gloriously fresh with a dusting of confectionery sugar. I was impressed again and the subtle taste of piloncillo found its way into every taste. While it's mildly unfair to review a place based solely on its takeout, El Fenix made a very good impression on me, and I look forward to visiting in the near future. read more

Showed up at 6:25 am. They didn't open the doors until 6:35 am, and didn't have any donuts ready. All they had where biscuts, Conchas, churros, and kolaches available. This place is a family tradition. Every year, we purchase pan de polvo and pass them out to family and friends for Christmas. The food is great, and the prices are amazing. They freeze well so that you can purchase extra for later in the year. The owners are very pleasant and make you feel welcome. If not too busy, they have no problem coming out and talking. I have a soft spot for El Fenix because they made my grandparents wedding cake nearly 44 years ago, and several of my childhood birthday cakes came from El Fenix. This bakery is an institution going back 70 years! The doughnuts are their signature. Nothing fancy, nothing complicated, just glazed and chocolate iced. Now the chocolate isn't a ganache or liquid glaze. This is some sort of creamy milk chocolate frosting that the owner, Philip, said it took two weeks to perfect. When the doughnuts are hot out of the oven they are heavenly. Melt in your mouth - literally! El Fenix also carries pan de polvo, conchas, and your other traditional Mexican bakery delicacies. Since they are a bakery, El Fenix does wedding, graduation, and birthday cakes in a variety of sizes and flavors. They open at 6:00 am and close sometime in the afternoon (their hours vary). read more

Picked up some sweets and they didn't disappoint. Chocolate donuts are a must try for chocolate lovers! Got some churros which we had never tried before and were good. Glazed donuts were gone before my wife and I knew it, my wife's class gobbled them up in an instant. Not only did we try the churros for the first time but strawberry filled donuts as well and El Fénix bakery did it again!
