Oh, us silly Americans!…read more After a long day of touristing all around Berlin we hit the 5PM mark and were completely famished. We had already sought Follerei out based on research and proximity to our apartment and walked up to grab a table. Naturally, they did not open until roughly 7PM. Who eats that early?! We grabbed snacks and beers to take home and went back to the restaurant around 9PM, a more respectable dining time. It's a cute little restaurant. Ya know, small, about the size of something I would want if I ever owned a restaurant. Intimate enough to really get to know the staff providing service and food. The menu was not in English and, knowing very little German, the owner saw our struggle and went through each and every item on the menu. That's amazing for someone to do and we were extremely appreciative of it. I ordered the salmon with lentils and potatoes. I cannot tell you the name of it on the menu but, if you dine here, ask the owner for it and you will not be disappointed. It was plentiful, cooked perfectly (crisp on the outside but super soft on the inside, if that makes any sense), and the perfect alternative to all the meat I had been eating that entire week. We never felt as if we were being rushed through our meal, either. Coming from a big city, I feel everyone is always in a hurry, but I never felt that way here or in Berlin. It's a little pricey compared to all of the quick restaurants in the area, but we were on vacation and did not mind. Plus, the food was so good it was completely worth the visit. If you find yourself in Neukolln, find yourself here... but at a respectable hour, of course!

Typical German restaurants come with heavy dishes of meat and potatoes, and while there were meat and potatoes on the menu (I had the wiener schnitzel after all) there was a much higher level of care and preparation. I would definitely come back!

The maître d' had remarked that there would be a wait for food since their tables had slightly overwhelmed them. I sincerely appreciated the honesty and we didn't mind waiting so long as the quality of their food remained. AND IT DID! So much so we went again for our last night in Berlin! The eggplant dish was superb, rich and absolutely beautiful. The beef tartare was delicious and filled with fresh herbs. Cheese and fig platter was the hidden gem though! My guest was blown away by the jams included with the order. Overall this place is so unique with a fusion of European cuisine. Fresh dishes and quality care given by the staff! I felt like I was part of the family.

This was one of the most delicious restaurant experiences I've enjoyed in my life…read more It was the first time my girlfriend & I have ever been to Berlin, and a friend who lives there treated us to one of the best dining experiences ever. First of all, the location is gorgeous. It's at Holzmarkt 25 which is such a beautiful and artistic and joyous space. So different to anything I've seen in the States. I strongly recommend going to Katerschmaus, but get there early and just hang out for a while by the river, taking in the wonderful creative and beautiful atmosphere. The three of us shared everything: the baby leaf salad, tuna tartare, truffled potato mousseline, wild broccoli, and Selpin catfish in a banana leaf, and for dessert since we couldn't decide, we had both mousse au chocolate (with fermented pepper, which I had for the first time) and Crème Brûlée. Every single bite was better than the last. I can't say anything other than Go! Try everything! The restaurant is right on the water. It's is cosy and beautiful. The creative food fits right in with the vibe - but it's so fancy, and so delicious it's almost amazing that it melds together so well.

Everybody needs some saborrr in their life…read more How bad did we need this? We drove all the way to Charlottenburg from Pankow. 'Twas a rainy night and nothing else can cure the weather blues like a round of Pisco Sours. Okay. Like 3 rounds. And then the shots came ... o_0 You see, our friends were ecstatic about our engagement and wedding plans so much that, even our server got in on the party. He offered shots (forced it upon us, really!) and it's rude to turn down gratis Pisco so there we were downing shot after shot. The aftermath the next day was ... Anyhoo, maybe I didn't eat enough to absorb all the Pisco shots? (nah, portion sizes are so generous!) or maybe shots just ruin me? maybe I'm getting old! (waaaah) No matter what you order at Sabor Latino, you should always start with a classic appetizer such as the Papa ala huancaina, which is a plate of boiled potatoes with a spicy yellow Peruvian chili sauce or the yucca frita, which is basically very very large cuts of steak fries. Everyone had the carne a la parillam for their entrees, which had medium rare Argentinian steak with beautiful symmetrical grill marks on the meat. It's not the most melt in your mouth steak you'll ever have nor will it be the best cut of steak your mouth will come into contact with, but the flavors are there and juiciness shows in every bite. After the merriment was over, we all headed home with happy giggles and wonderful memories to last us for a long time.
