The staff are always friendly, and they use the wallspace inside for exhibiting the work of local artists which is a nice way to get involved with the local community. The only drawbacks are firstly that it's a bit pricey, but then these places usually are so that's only to be expected. Secondly though, if you're eating in the seating area always feels a bit claustrophobic - quite simply because it is a very small space! I'm not sure if there's anything they could do about it, but it would be great if sometime in the future they moved to a bigger shop and had a more roomy seating area.

Now they have expanded into serving delicious take out foods such as falafel, salads, fries, and different delicious sandwiches. They have the best, baguettes, bread, coconut puffs, cinnamon buns. If I could, I would be there right now... I got one of the spinach and cheese gozleme (I think?) - basically a type of crepe/pancake with filling. Hot off the plate, the cheese oozes and the dough is soft and chewy. Of course, I also had to get the baklava - I tried their super baklava. The layers were perfectly flaky and sweet. It does seem to be a family-run establishment, with a lovely older woman making the gozleme and various sons/daughters manning the cashier or bringing food out. The customers were clearly regulars and chatted in (I assume) Turkish. Made me feel like I was in an authentic Turkish bakery :) TL;DR: Go here and thank me later.

I duly opted for a loaf of the Russian bread. £2.90 for a small loaf of rye bread seems to be the going rate for the area, and the bread is actually quite tasty - a proper "schwarzbrot"! The cakes were another matter, I opted for a small slice of apple cake which was quite horrible. I've since done a little bit of online research and was very surprised to learn that Granier is a Spanish franchise company. Portobello Road actually has a lot of Spanish and Portuguese history but Granier doesn't come across as authentic in the way that Garcias a few blocks down the road does. I will return for more bread but avoid the sweet temptations from now on. Takeaway only for me, too, as the decor just doesn't do it for me.

It has the feel of a mom and pop joint. But none of things I tried, sweet or savoury, will tempt me to come back. But they have a thriving clientele and people seem to be keep rushing in to pick something up. The breads seem popular going by how many people came in to get some. But the pastries and savouries (pizza etc) are not great. Plus, they heat it in a microwave. That can't be good for food that's supposed to be crunchy. But an extra star for the people and the ambiance!
