Found the Love Cafe just a couple miles off the highway, and definitely worth the little "detour". It's small but charming with an open kitchen and literally everything done in front of you. If you are the type that doesn't want to know what a real working kitchen looks like, keep rolling because this isn't your place. Love Cafe offers soups, salads, bowls, smoothies, breakfast, tacos, and wraps. We popped in at about 1:30 and they even offered to serve us breakfast, if we wanted it (typically stop serving after 10:30) which was very sweet. I got one of their bowls which are customizable or you can order one of their staple options. Bowls are served with your choice of protein options, base (quinoa, rice or Cali rice), 6 toppings like black beans, cheeses, veggies and sunflower seeds, and sauce/dressings. I got the chicken bowl with sesame ginger dressing and it was made fresh and a great healthy option for something fast. My travel companion got the Shrimp tacos with mango salsa. The "tacos" were more like a large burrito type tortilla cut in half to make two "tacos". Shrimp was ok but not really seasoned or special. This felt like an open wrap more than a taco. But still a nice option for a quick lunch on the healthy side. All in all we were very happy that we found this cute spot, would be happy to return and try other items. A quick google search led us to this, dare I use the cliche, "hidden gem". I had a great burger, my wife had a turkey Rueben she enjoyed. The prices are in keeping with the current economy and our service was pleasant and energetic if a bit scattered at times. We arrived right before the lunch rush, and it wasn't quite clear what their distribution of work was. Everyone was hustling, but there wasn't cohesion in the outcomes. All good, a very minor criticism from a retired executive struggling for things to fix. That's the review- you can stop there. The rest of this is observations about expectations and how I have often found places "out of time and place" in my many travels. I did a quick search, the original building was a Country Store, the restaurant came along in 1991. There was a total rebuild in 2004 that sought to capture some of the original character of the site, with modern materials, plumbing, electric etc. I am fascinated with what buildings used to be and how they served the population. There are a few things out of place in this small town off Interstate 85. I am not being a jerk city slicker, I grew up in an even smaller backwater about an hour north near Petersburg. After travelling all over we have settled in retirement in a sleepy little town in southern Illinois. The original Star Wars spoke so loudly to 14 year old me, I was Luke stuck on Tantoonie, not Disputanta, VA. The first thing that stuns a bit is an entire row of Tesla chargers, not sure if that's a response to road traffic or rich local families and their kids with Teslas instead of Camero's now. I say that because our 41% tip did not phase our server at all, so the analysis says that kind of cash flow is not a surprise to the staff. You get to the door and there is the satisfying old creek of a worn hinge, and too many operations between a bit of oil. [Side note, in this recent trip through IL, IN, OH, WV, MD, NC, KY, I came upon so many doors that need just a little bit of WD40 or silicone, and maybe a screw turn or two]. I suppose with the tough realities of business today, the little routine maintenance things just have to take a back seat. Not a big issue for doors, but it leads me (like I said bored retiree) to wonder about whether, pay me now or pay me later, maintenance is also wanting. Once inside there is this clever balance of dark wood, and natural light. It manages to look old and fresh at the same time. There are multiple rooms and the decor is rustic with a part Pub, part golf country club vibe. It seems like the place the town powerful come to for a 2 hour martini lunch, but people off the highway are welcome to visit, enjoy their meal and leave. I think that is a challenge that all small towns have in our current environment. We don't want the "outside world" to invade our imagined utopias. The menu would be at home in the tonier parts of Norfolk, or the dining district in Richmond. The staples are here, what we had was well executed. There is just enough culinary flair to tell you the cooks, if not formally trained, they have at least consulted some Youtube and Tik Tok guidance. Earlier in the trip in MD, my wife encountered a diner we used to enjoy that has gone full "fru-fru", adding ingredients to classic dishes in a nearly haphazard fashion as if an unwanted sauce now justifies a $3 price jump. That is not the case here at Kahill's, at first glance on a very busy menu, it seems like they made that same gamble. That is not the case, where Kahill's has made an adjustment it feels like a more organic modernization. We talked to the owner, business has been good, he has vision and drive and I wish them well. The next time we are in the area we will definitely visit again.

Even though the gas was 16 cents higher than the station across the street, I figured I'd pay the premium for the "luxury" of not crossing traffic. Big mistake. Huge. The bathrooms were spectacularly disgusting--a true masterpiece of neglect. The men's room smelled like a science experiment gone wrong, dried urine decorated the only working urinal like modern art, chewing gum was stuck inside it for added texture, and of course there was no soap, because why offer basic hygiene when you can offer disappointment? My wife and daughter said the women's restroom wasn't any better, so at least the filth is consistent across genders. And honestly, if they don't take pride in keeping the bathrooms clean, I'd be seriously concerned about the cleanliness of the food prep areas. If the restroom looks like a biohazard zone, I can only imagine what's happening behind the counter. When we went to pay, the cashier was deeply committed to his phone--far more committed than he was to the line of customers waiting. I mentioned the bathroom situation, and he didn't even blink. Clearly, he's heard it all before and has reached a level of apathy most people can only dream of. I will never stop here again. I'd rather push my vehicle 10 miles than spend another dollar at the 1120 East Atlantic Street, La Crosse, VA 23950 location.

They sell Firewood for 2/$12, along with ice that was next to it. The restrooms are to the right. Immediately when to walk in to the right, there is gambling stations, coffee, and food such as hotdogs and pizza. Only 1 of the 5 slurpee options were in order. There was 15 options on the fountain drink station. They also sold sweet tea that was fresh brewed, which was interesting. There is a cooler with ice cream that was halfway empty. I noticed the beer cave that was fairly stocked, have a hood amount of beverage choices, and they accept EBT. They also sold travel items such as neck pillows and toys. They have an ATM and sell frozen food next to a cooler of ice. In the mens restroom, there are two urinals and two stalls. The toilets in the stalls were abnormally close to the ground. There were two sinks and a electric hand dryer. There was also a baby changing station that was clean. The restroom was clean. They have signs to notify staff if the restroom needs service. I ended up getting a bag Chex mix that was $1.99. The items in the store were labeled with prices, which was great. The prices for this 7-Eleven was fairly reasonable/typically versus other locations. This is the 3rd-4th one I been to since my visit in Virginia and I noticed a lack of consistency with prices. I'm sure that's because each may be independent owned. After using the rest room and browsing the store, I decided to grab some chips as my stomach started to growl. There was no line. I noticed Buzz Balls by the check out counter. The cashier, Darnese, was friendly. My chips cost me $2. I left my wallet in the car S I wasn't planning on buying anything, but they accept Apple Pay! Overall, no complaints. There was a guy stocking and another staff person, who I'm assuming was the manager, talking with a tech who came to fix something.

If I'm driving that rig again in this area, I have a couple choices, coming to Applebee's or parking in the Wally World parking lot and walking somewhere else. Convenience can win sometimes. :)
