This place is amazing. The people who have mentioned how rough the building looks weren't joking. We almost didn't go in as there are bars on every window and door, which doesn't exactly inspire confidence. However, the food was fantastic and I think I might be a warm salsa convert. Make sure you get the guacamole, it's great. I always say the best food comes from places you drive by that look so rough that you'd NEVER consider even trying them. Delicious, authentic Mexican food served by Mexicans, in a homey, low-key environment. I ordered in Spanish and translated for the significant-other unit. Which always works out fine for us. I got the agua de jamaica and two vegetarian sopes. He ordered a limonada and the filete a la plancha (fish). Everything was delicious, and there was so much fish on his plate we had to ask for a box to take it home. If you ever have a craving for delicious, homemade, comforting masa-based dishes--you know, on those rainy, gray days that chill your bones--then definitely stop in here for delicious tortillas and sopes. I saw they also have huaraches and other delectables. YUM! The guy behind us was eating the most delicious looking soup I ever saw. I will definitely have to try the soups too. I wasn't impressed with this place. There are tons of good Mexican restaurants in Aurora and this isn't one of them. One of my biggest gripes is that they have a musical trio that comes from table to table charging patrons to play songs. All the other places that I've been to has musicians that play for tips. This was my favorite place , until I was served raw shrimp (Camarones Aguachiles)and became ill, its basically raw uncooked shrimp cooked in lemon, typically it cooks itself with the lemon if allowed sufficient time to cook on its own. I felt the plate was delivered at the same time as our meals which was about 10 minutes and the server told me it would take longer than the food , but that was not the case. I called the restaurant and spoke with the female manager at the front check out desk and all she did is apologize. She could of addressed my concerns and advised what she would do ( notify the cooks and the server) and all I received was an apology for 3 days that i was laid out sick with food poisoning . Their shrimp might be Farm shrimp or local grocery low quality shrimp I will never go eat there again. read more

Totally great place. The waitress didn't speak English too well, and I don't speak Spanish too well, so when merged, we got exactly what we ordered. Their Clamato and beer was great, and their salsa was really great too. The red was smoky and a bit spicy, the green-mild was good if you like green sauce. Chips were yummy, and the tortillas were amazing -- and homemade! The chorizo and eggs was a smaller, delicious portion and the boy's tacos were all eaten with gusto, so I assume they were good. Guac was homemade and great, not watery or spiced with artificial flavors. All in all, amazing food and good prices. The decor is very divey, so be prepared. read more

Went to La Quebrada on Saturday, May 14th with my husband for dinner. Was really looking forward to it based on good reviews. Our waitress was very friendly. However... We ordered food and drinks from the menu unaware of a "red sticker" on the front of the menu! The "red sticker" implied that prices in the menu might not be current! Read "ask your server for details". Unaware of this sticker, that should have brought to our attention, we ordered food and drinks based on what we thought were the prices. The menu listed their house margaritas as $9.99 for large. I ordered the house and my husband ordered Jose Silver for his margaritas. Our bill came, and to our surprise, we were charged $14.00 for the house margaritas and $18.00 for the Jose silver. We asked the server why we were charged the different price from the menu and she and said she would check. The owner/manager refused to correct the discrepancy stating that we should have been aware of the so called "red sticker" on the front of their menu! So basically, if you, as most people, did not notice the sticker on the front of the menu, you were ordering anything off the menu not knowing the true price! Maybe regular customer's know this but we sure didn't! What a crime! And such horrible hospitality knowing we truly had no idea that the menu prices could have been any unknown price! Needless to say, we will never visit again! And the food was just "ok". Many other better Mexican restaurants to visit that do not deliberately rip off their customers! read more

Getting dinged for 1 star for weak service (even when dining during non-dinner rush hours) The salsa served with chips is served warm- huge difference & tastes great! The Enchiladas Verde & the fajitas were easily the best I have ever had, hands down. I prefer more regional and/or upscale (of the Rick Bayless, Salpicon, etc. type) Mexican food and since moving to the Fox Valley from Chicago, I've been looking and looking and then looking some more for great Mexican. While there are tons of good Mexican places in Aurora, West Chicago, etc., I hadn't found many great places. La Quebrada is great. Their various carne asada dishes are fantastic - especially the carne asada estilo La Quebrada - a tender piece of skirt steak grilled to perfection topped with melted chihuahua cheese and their special sauce (don't know what's in it - it's mild, but elevates the dish). They make their own tortillas - enough said. Fantastic moles, tacos, and other more regional dishes than most places. It's kind of in the middle of nowhere on Rt. 31 south of downtown Aurora, but is well worth the 20 mins. it takes me to get there. On the weekends they have mariachis. This is not upscale or fancy, but fantastic Mexican food. read more

Honestly walked in with an open mind since I've never been here before. As soon as I walked in I ordered a drink and of course I am of age but I got some weird looks from our server. I was not ready to order since I came with company we wanted to catch up and drink a bit, I guess after ordering 2 drinks & not ordering food they actually cut you off without warning, so they literally force you and your company who's been drinking as well go order food even if you aren't hungry.... we order food and it's super average if that. Killed the whole vibe after receiving that information, the waitress didn't stop by to ask us if the food was good, if we needed anything with our meal or if we would like to order our drinks, even though we had said we did. After today...... yeah this place is a no go if you're trying to relax have some drinks and some food, you're not on your time here you are on theirs and that's absurd. What I love about Yelp is that it helps me find hidden gems that I never would have heard of otherwsie. La Quebrada is the best of them. I was planning a date night for my husband & me and waited til the last minute to come up with something. I hit yelp looking for something Mexican or Italian. The reviews on La Quebrada blew every other option away. We went on a Saturday night & drove right past the place - it's small & not well lit. We got in there & I swear I had flashback's to my aunt's basement back in the day. Rancheras playing on the jukebox, very basic decor...very simple. Based on that, I knew we hit the jackpot. My husband ordered the carne asada tampiquena & I got cheese enchiladas - both were hands down the best we'd ever had. Especially the best we'd had in the west burbs. We took our first bites & just looked at each other stunned at how good it was. This is the real deal. They don't waste money on making a fancy restaurant, they put their money into quality ingredients. Our food was phenomenal. It's right along the Fox River so next time we plan to go during the day when we can enjoy a walk along the river & lunch at La Quebrada. I highly recommend giving it a try. Yes, Yes, Yes. I found the Mole' Mecca. The food here is amazing, stumbled upon this place by heading down Broadway going to the post office. I'm so happy that I did. Had Cheese Enchiladas, and a Chicken Taco, all for around 7 bucks. I had my Enchiladas split, 1 Mole, and 2 Verde. Of course I was scared to try the Mole' because it is SO HARD TO FIND A GOOD ONE, but boy was I surprised. The Verde and Mole were equally excellent, as was the flavor of the juicy Chicken Taco. So follow this checklist to find good food in your 'hood. Looks like a 'hole in the wall? Servers aren't smiley and chatty? Mostly locals eating there? If all three of these questions are can be answered with True, then most likely the food will be AMAZING! I will be back. read more

Anytime I'm asked to recommend good Mexican food - this is the first place to come to mind. Of course it's preceded by, how open minded are you. As mentioned before, it isn't downtown Naperville. It's in an Aurora neighborhood. The building isn't the most inviting place - but the parking lot is full, the food is amazing and the staff is happy you're there. I was weirded out by the warm salsa initially, but now I crave it. I've tried most of the menu offerings and honestly, I can't come up with a favorite. A friend of mine was not only celebrating Mother's Day today, but also her birthday. We decided to take a bike ride to Phillips Park on this glorious day, to view the Sunken Gardens and get some much needed exercise. I was starting to get hungry on the way over, and La Quebrada is right on the Virgil Gilman trail, on the east side of the Fox River, on Hazel and S. Broadway (Rt. 25)...so I suggested we go there on our way back. So...we dined at this fabulous restaurant in a non pristine neighborhood (which we kinda like!) and had scrumptious, reasonably priced fare...she had huevos, hashed browns, rice and beans and I had a tongue taco and a cheese and onion enchilada draped in mole sauce. The funny thing is that during our conversation, my friend told me she had heard of a fantastic Mexican Restaurant on Farnsworth and New York St., and asked if I knew the name?? I didn't...and then I read here that there is a La Quebrada in that very place...I guess they're just rockin' the Mexican food all over...deeeeeeelish!!!! read more

There are at least 7500 Mexican places in Aurora. This is in my top 5. They have a lot of dishes that you won't find at other places. I had the Lomo De Res En Chile De Arbol (copied/pasted from menu). I have had this dish before served over french fries, but they don't do it that way here. It was really good, spicy enough to make my nose run and had rice and beans. They must make the tortillas here because they were awesome. If they don't make them, they know a guy who makes really awesome tortillas. The place is big, there is a parking lot and it is right off the Fox River. So after you stuff your burrito hole with delicious food, you can walk it off. read more

La Quebrada is some of the best Mexican food in Kane County. While cleaner than most, on this most recent meal we did find one fly looming around our table (perhaps because we were very near the entrance). The tacos and enchiladas needed some salt and salsa -- which has just enough spice and heat to let you know it's there but not so much that it will scare you away. The example pictures on their menu don't make the food look aesthetically pleasing or inviting but when it arrives on the table you're never disappointed. Their guacamole is damn tasty, but also needed some salt to get the right flavor that I was looking for. I've tried a lot of Mexican restaurants, and La Quebrada is easily one of the best. The Chiles Rellenos are phenomenal, and so is the Pastor. We've never once gotten food that wasn't perfect. We usually get it to go, and our orders are always 100% accurate. The people who work there are always very friendly and go out of their way to make us feel welcome and valued. A group of us went here a few months ago (maybe February) and I would not go back. The restaurant looked run down. They had painted who knows how long ago yet the old painters tape is still all around the edges all ugly looking and the pain job was ugly too. There were fruit flies all over the place including getting in our food. I don't think the food has much flavor either. The waiter was nice and friendly. Excellent authentic Mexican food, with a friendly service, home made corn tortillas are the best, very extensive menu, the "aguas frescas" freshly made are my girlfriends favorite, the only think I believe they have to improve it's on their chips most of the time the new ones are mixed with old ones and makes them all stale, and their huaraches and sopes would be better if they were no so hard, other than that we love this place. read more
