    Pupusas

I'm so sad that Bolzano's went out of business, and even more so now that I've tried La Promesa in all its terribleness. Ugh. First of all, it's not a welcoming atmosphere at all. When you walk in, they have refrigerators and weird wood paneling blocking off view of the grills and everything. Not only is this a strange change from the rest of the setup that they've left exactly like Bolzano's otherwise, it means that it takes a while for any employees to see you. There's also no place to put in and order, even though the setup looks like a left-to-right order style (similar to Subway). I actually came here one day and no one ever came to take my order, so I left. I went back today for lunch, and turns out, they're trying to make this a sit-down restaurant (if you walk inside, you'll understand why that's a terrible idea with this setup). Finally, someone came out and asked me to sit at one of the tables and gave me a menu. The menu is just so-so. None of the entrees seemed very interesting or appropriate for lunch, but they have no lunch menu. So I ordered a la carte one taco and two pupusas. They don't have a fountain soda machine, so I just ordered tap water. The food came out quickly enough, but the pupusas were not very good. They put them on a wax paper to try to hide how watery they are (why, I have no idea). That makes it impossible to cut them with a knife and fork, which is further complicated by how cheap the forks are -- feels like a noodle in your hand, about to snap at any moment. The watery zucchini and cheese pupusa was OK, aside from needing to have drained the veg before adding it. The bean and cheese pupusa was terrible -- it had bean coloring, like bean juice maybe, but there were no actual beans in it. Weird and disgusting. The beef taco was really a steak taco (why not call it a steak taco? everywhere else beef means ground beef for the taco), and it was very tiny. It was OK, tasted exactly like Baja Fresh. When I was finished, the server who seated me and brought me my food never returned. I waited a while, then just went up to stand at the counter. There is a "pay here" sign at the counter, but it's the same one Bolzano's had hanging, so I have no idea if that's what you're supposed to do? I stood there a long time before any of the several employees acknowledged me then finally came to let me pay. Then, I had to wait longer because they didn't have any change and had to go into the back for a while to find some. I won't be back. I give this place less than a year before it becomes part of the ever-revolving carousel of restaurants in this shopping center.

Awesome place in the corner of the strip mall along rte 7 in sterling. I came here on Saturday afternoon during quarantine to order some tacos for carry out, but I've also been here many time before to order pupusas, subs and other things off of their menu. Everyone here is friendly and the food is always solid. These tacos were amazing!

Stopped in here to try some food for the first time. I was not disappointed. We had the fajita steak, pupusa, carne asada tacos, chorizo tacos. Everything was delicious. The restaurant was clean and the staff was friendly. I recommend this restaurant and I will be returning.

Say hello to my new favorite thing: El Salvadorean pupusas. La Promesa recently opened in the place previously occupied by Bolzano's, in Countryside. I was at the thrift store next door and smelled something delicious. I asked the lady at the thrift store and she said La Promesa was very popular with the staff. Girded with this knowledge I boldly stepped inside! The friendly young lady at the counter put up with all of my dumb questions and gave great advice about the menu. I selected a bunch of pupusas and a tamal and brought them home to share with my lovely bride. The food was delicious. Soft masa dough griddled with cheese, beef, pork, beans or several other fillings and combinations. Our favorites were the pork and cheese, and the bean, cheese, and loroco (Salvadorean herb, could be described inadequately as being oregano-like). They come with a light, fresh tomato sauce and curtido, a lightly fermented Salvadorean pickled cabbage. I have never had this before but it is a new favorite. The prices are extremely reasonably as well. I also sampled the three fresh house-made-from-scratch juices on offer: mango, melon, and passion fruit. Absolutely delicious and not too sweet. Also, good news, Balzano's lovers, they kept the cheese steak on the menu because of popular demand! (This is not a rebranding, these are different people altogether, btw.) In short, a great experience. Highly recommend!

This is the first time my family and I came to this restaurant and it will not be our last. Everything we ordered were consistently good ( carne asada, chicken quesadillas and curio sundae). The wait staff are all friendly and efficient. They're very professional. The only reason why I didn't give a 5 Star rating is because the food were a bit slow in coming out from the kitchen. However, it was worth the wait since they were all delicious

Amazing Food!!!!!!! I love it!! I just discovered this place 2 days ago, not realizing it has been opened for 2 years now & I'm absolutely loving it. I'm 3 minutes away from it which makes it even better!

From out of state. Ordered pupusas and yucca. To drink we got horchata (I'm mexican by the way) Pupusas were the best i've had, they are really oily which i love. Horchata was horrible though.

Went today for the first time to try the Pan con pollo. I must say I am excited to have finally found a local spot where I can get a delicious Pan con pollo salvadoreño! The sandwich was huge, basically a whole roll, it had plenty of veggies, dressing, the bread was nice and soft, AND they provided a little cup full of sauce for the sandwich! Can't express how much consideration they had with my order. Aside from the extra delicious sauce, they also put the escabeche veggies in a to-go baggie so it wouldn't make my bread soggy. The man at the counter was also very kind and friendly. I had also asked for some Horchata but he kindly said that they didn't have some at the moment but they will soon set up their house made drinks. He kindly offered bottled drinks so I went with an incakola instead. I'll definitely return and recommend you give them a try.

Tacos. One pork and one beef. Get the pork.

Verdict: Would go again. A blue collar type of place. The inside is decorated with random knick knacks here and there, things that don't really tie the place together or make much sense, like clutter in some people's homes. There's a tiny "kids corner" right by the entrance that is big enough for literally one child, and is just out of place, but perfect if you wanted to grab someone else's kid and run out the door. Plenty of seating and not too busy during lunch on a weekday. There's upbeat Latin music playing and a big screen TV showing some kind of family travel show. The food is good. I ordered a cheese bean and pork pupusa, one pork taco, one beef taco, and a chicken tamale. There's no soda fountain, just an ice machine and juice, and canned/bottled soda and other drinks. I just got a Sprite. The pupusa came with some hot sauce and a mild vinegary slaw on the side. The cheese inside was nice, salty, and stretchy. Some of it oozed out onto the grill and got nicely browned for extra flavor. The tacos were each topped with raw onions, cilantro, and a slice of radish, and came with a side of green salsa and tomato salsa. Both were good but I favored the pork which had a great crispy caramelized flat-top grilled exterior. The tamale was super soft and seasoned well. It was stuffed with chicken and (I think) potato. Note the chicken inside was a whole wing flat, so it had bones, but wasn't a problem. They advertise pupusas and tacos, and those turned out to be the best out of what I ordered. No idea why they have subs and pizza on the menu.

The Papusa here are awesome. Always flavorful. And the chicken Papusa's don't contain chicken gristle, like some places I've tried.

La Pupusa Loca -- Sterling, VA…read more I can't stop raving about La Pupusa Loca in Sterling! From the first bite, I could tell this place is committed to authentic Salvadoran flavor. The revuelta pupusas were packed with cheese, beans, and pork--they didn't skimp on the fillings. Every bite was rich and satisfying I also tried their La Pupusa Familiar (the pizza‑sized pupusa), and wow--eight giant slices, each like two regular pupusas in thickness and flavor. The bean‑and‑cheese rice version was out‑of‑this‑world cheesy, the perfect mix of gooey cheese and savory bean flavor. Huge portions, and every slice was amazing Their queso con loroco pupusa paired with their house-made salsa roja is truly special--the best I've ever tasted. It's bold and flavorful, and the salsa perfectly complements the cheesy loroco stuffing Service here is friendly and efficient--even when they're busy, the staff handles orders quickly and with a smile. A few reviewers mentioned the place can get lively or have a short wait, but that just means it's popular--and for a good reason! If you're craving top-tier Salvadoran food in Virginia, this is it. No frills, but every dish is packed with heart and flavor. I'll definitely be coming back--and you should too!
