My date and I ordered 2 glasses of wine (which were both very generously over poured, a plus). I got a shrimp entree and it was absolutely delicious. While my date and I proceeded to finish up our last few sips of wine, I noticed a bug crawling INTO my bag, A COCKROACH. YUCK, DISGUSTING. I approached the manger who then told me it was "normal" because they come in through the shipments. That "they bug bomb every 2 weeks". I've been working in restaurants for 8 YEARS and I've never seen or had a problem with cockroaches. If it's a common occurrence for a restaurant, they have a SERIOUS INFESTATION. I dumped out my bag and used my flashlight app on my phone to see if there were any still lingering in my bag, in fear that I would bring the problem home to my house. We came here once a month for years, but as time goes on we have found that the food is not quite as delicious as it was years ago, and prices have certainly risen over the years. There are also a ton of great places in the area so their competition keeps us from coming back often. The food is consistant. My daughter and son order chicken parmagan and another one of my sons always gets the chicken primavera. I enjoy their eggplant parm and also the lasagna, Their salads are superb and there are plenty of shrimp if you order shrimp on one of their salads, The place is clean enough, and the staff is okay. La Piazza is the Olive Garden of Long Island. But what a BIG difference in taste! For starters, their appetizers are actually appetizing. The ZUPPA DI COZZE (fresh cultivated mussels in fresh garlic & crushed tomato sauce) is lip smacking! The mussels are big, fresh, & swimming in that flavorful, garlicky, & red spicy peppery tomato sauce...great for dipping the side of breads. Buono!!! Their pizzas don't taste like cardboard! That's right folks...they have real Italian flavors. My special favorite is the CRISPINO (extra thin crust pizza layered w/ mozzarella, spotted w/ garlic & "San Marzano" crushed plum tomato sauce, drizzled w/ extra virgin olive oil). The panini's are savory. We were particularly eyeing the CHICKEN W/ ROASTED PEPPERS, but ordered the MELANZANE W/ MOZZARELLA & ROASTED PEPPERS. It was adequate, but not earth/mouth-shattering. It did taste good after drizzling some olive oil & balsamic vinegar on it...to add a little pizazz! Lastly, the most singular important thing that La Piazza has over Olive Garden, are their CANNOLI'S. They may not have the best (the ones in Boston's North End are exceptional!), but they are adequate and appropriate for ending an Italian meal...well, if you're tired of having slices of tiramisu like me. Crash and burn. My last review was from about a year ago, and I just tried La Piazza again. I will not make that mistake again. This place was the place to go for pizza during the school lunch breaks, but has now deteriorated into something disgraceful. The menu is the same, but the prices have increased by about 35% and the food quality has been dropping. The nice salad my friend ordered looked perfect until she picked up a long strand of black hair. Bringing this to the attention of the men at the counter brought shrugs and suggestions to "throw it out". Are you kidding me? I would never return. It's sad, because this place was killer for pizza. Decent, but not worth the hype. The hot subs are usually top-notch. The entrees are not overly delicious but certainly not inedible. The pizza is good, but there's a LOT of better pizza nearby, and for less money. The soups are usually pretty watery and not all that great. Yet, La Piazza is a staple in the area. Food is great but the ignorance of the staff is baffling. I went with a buddy of mine and we grew up in Merrick and have been eating here for a long time. Never in my life did I ever go to a restaurant and was told I can't sit at a table? I was told by the waitresses that the tables are reserved for people who are ordering from the menu. Me and my friend both work full time ordered slices bought drinks and were told we can't sit at the table and instead we were being told to sit on uncomfortable stools with the worst counter as a table with no space! We still sat at the tables and told the stupid staff we work full time at our real career jobs and will not be told to sit at a terrible location made for pre teens. Beyond moronic and I let the idiots there know but the foods good. Everyone should be allowed to sit anywhere if they buy your food. read more

I had my bridal shower here, the food is amazing. very nice looking room and they set up everything up perfectly for my shower. the only one tiny complaint I even had was instead of girly bridal punch we asked for, we had mimosas but it was so good I didn't really care. If it was based on pizza alone, I would give this place 5 stars hands down. However I ate some of the most fundamental Italian dishes and was far from impressed. #1 the baked ziti was a glob of mozzarella congealed with pasta and marinara. I've had some great baked ziti and this definitely wasn't it. The seasoning was bland...it was a let down. 2 stars. #2 chicken francese (one of my favorite dishes) was much better than the ziti but far from great. A group of us (4) came here for dinner tonight in order to try the food and possibly reserve a private event in La Piazza's Catering section of the establishment. We arrived here around 7:15pm and the restaurant was packed to full capacity, with about 25-30 tables varying from 2-person and 4-person tables. I noticed a large part of the customers had children, so it was noticeably loud with all the shouting and loud chatter. We only waited about 2-3 minutes before being seated. Immediately walking into the restaurant, to the right is the pizza-making area and displays of calzones, rolls, and paninis. Just beyond that is a small window counter for Italian ices, with a choice of ~8 flavors. The ambiance was pretty modern, with beige/green tiled floorings, granite countertops, wood-trimmed tables and black cushioned wood chairs. Lighting was bright, with enough natural light from the large windows and ample light fixtures. Service was good, as our waiter was attentive, never missing a cue: taking drink orders (asking if we'd like lemon with our orders without us having to ask), entree orders, checking up on us from time to time and asking us if we'd like dessert without us ever having to try to get his attention. Our entree orders were lightning fast, coming out in only 5 minutes from ordering. For my entree, I ordered the Chicken Piccata ($17.25), which were 2 thin pieces of tender pan-seared chicken sauteed with capers and artichoke hearts in a light white wine, lemon, and basil sauce. I found portions to be slightly on the small side, for the price, but besides that, I enjoyed my dish. The chicken was tender and juicy, though I did find the sauce a little on the sour (lemony) side. I would have appreciated it for it to be toned a bit. The artichoke hearts were soft and delicious, never biting into any hard pieces. On the side, I had a choice of salad, spaghetti or penne. I chose the penne which was a small bowl cooked al dente, and the tomato sauce was pretty standard. I also had a chance to try the Rigatoni Florentina ($14.75) which are fresh chicken pieces, spinach and mozzarella cheese tossed in a creamy pink sauce over rigatoni. Portions were decently sized, but most of all was how delicious this dish was!! The chicken was tender and juicy, and the mozzarella with the pink sauce was savory. Yum!! I was really digging that dish. And last but not least, I was able to try the baby clams from the Linguine Di Mare ($16.25) with the garlic & extra virgin olive oil. The shrimp, mussels, and baby clams were generous, with about 20-25 pieces altogether. The clams were very fresh. And I don't want to forget about the complimentary bread was hot and fresh. The crispini/pita type of bread with a dab of butter was just so tasty. Yup! I never knew your typical standard-fare basket bread could be so good. In all, I was pretty delighted with all the dishes, though prices are a little higher than what I'd expect for a casual family-oriented Italian restaurant. But with a restaurant at full capacity on a Monday evening, says a lot about La Piazza, and for good reason. Definitely check this place out! We also had the privilege to check out the catering section of the establishment, with a medium-sized room capable of holding 50-70 people comfortably, with each table holding 8-12 people. In the middle, is a small dance floor, about 7'x20', and bright red neon lights running along the perimeter of the ceiling for those looking to dance a little. There is also a small private patio area, which is a good area for those wanting to get some fresh air or have a smoke. There are also a his and hers bathroom near the back of the catering hall. Pros: *Best buffalo chicken slice I have had. *Good variety of dishes for an Italian restaurant/trattoria. Cons: *Freakin expensive *Staff comes across as grudgingly tolerant of its clientele. *Parking lot is a headache. *Chaotic ordering during busy hours. I have had an on-again, off-again relationship with La Piazza for years. They do have some good stuff, but it is way overpriced for what it is. They have a $13.95 "Caprino Salad," which is, essentially a huge pile of lettuce with some shrimp, goat cheese and veggies thrown on top. The salad is very tasty, but you do not get your money's worth with it - at almost $15, it is practically all lettuce. The staff behind the counter (I can't speak for table service) is consistently disinterested in the customers. They take orders and deliver food with the disinterested and perfunctory efficiency of airport security or someone penning cattle on a ranch. Though the managers will recognize me when I am there, I have never really felt valued as a customer. This limited interaction may be due, in part, to the fact that the ordering counter is run as a free-for-all. There is no indication as to where a line would form, there is a register at either end of the counter, and there are multiple entrances. The staff generally leaves it up to the customers to decide who is next, which allows the more aggressive customers to push their way in before others. Calling in an order for pickup does not help with this, because you still have to fight your way to the counter when you get there. If you go - be sure to get the buffalo chicken pizza. It is, seriously, the best I have had anywhere. The La Piazza food is decent - the La Piazza experience needs work. read more

It's your average NY pizza/pasta place, but in a really "upscale looking" environment. I mean, there's a horse statue outside. My friend lives nearby and SWEARS by this place. We used to come a lot in college, and the food was pretty good. I always preferred Spasso's in Wantagh (which has now closed) for specialty slices and pasta dishes. Since relocating to Jacksonville, every so often I get a craving for "REAL NEW YORK ITALIAN FOOD." (News flash: There are places to get really good Italian down south. You just have to look.) I came back to visit Long Island and my friend brought us out here for dinner. I ordered the lasagna, and my friends ordered chicken parm, penne alla vodka, and the minestrone soup. The food was just average. I'm a big believer that the quality of an Italian dish is based on its sauce (or "gravy" if you're one of those). The tomato sauce here is bland. There isn't much flavor to it, so the lasagna/chicken parm were very so-so. The penne alla vodka was pretty good, but that uses a different sauce. Pros: The atmosphere at La Piazza is nice and family friendly. It is a good place to bring kids for a meal. They have decent pizza. Cons: It gets way to crowded during the prime dining times. This is a glorified pizza place that also servers full entrees. Expect to get pizza place quality food, but at prices you would pay at a regular Italian restaurant. Bottom line - If you are looking for a family friendly place to take your kids for dinner this is a good bet. The food is pretty good, I would say a bit better than average. The portions are large, I would assume most people bring half of it home. I personally don't like being forced to buy a huge dinner, I would much prefer a $12-15 dinner that is normally sized, but maybe that's just me. This place is very busy most of the time, very crowded and noisy, just fyi. However, there are many small problems with this place. It is expensive. I would say the average entrée was about $23. (ie: eggplant parmigiana was $19!) Come on, it's an eggplant! A soft drink, with the ice in it, is probably about 7 ozs., at best. Assuming it costs them 15 cents for the soda (probably less) to not give free refills is just grubbing for money, totally unnecessary It costs something like $2.50, and they don't give free refills. God forbid that they only make $2,20 instead of $2.35 profit on a single glass of soda. Apparently they feel justified in making $4.70 when you buy a second glass of soda. Price gouging, imho. The real killer is the sauce. Have you ever paid extra for sauce on your pasta? Neither have I. Pomodoro, which is basically tomato, is included on your pasta. If you want anything else, there is an additional $1.50 cost! Marinara, which is basically garlic, onions and parsley added to pomodoro, is an extra $1.50! For a place with high prices to begin with, to nickel and dime the customer is just wrong. Given that there are a gazillion great Italian restaurants in the area, we won't be returning here any time soon. . read more

I like this Italian restaurant. I've been here a couple of times and the food is good. It's kid-friendly too, with a changing table in the (clean, roomy, one-stall) bathroom and new-looking high chairs. Save the small fee to get your salad chopped though - last time I was here, two of us got chopped salads and we could have done just as well with our fork and knife. read more

La Piazza has become our go-to pizza place in the area. We have only gotten pizza here, but are never disappointed. Pizza is always fresh and delicious. Since they are always busy, you know you will always get a fresh slice of pizza. You don't have to worry about getting a slice that has been sitting on the counter all day (or even left over from last night) like you may experience at other places that do not see as much business. Only complaint would be is that they are not cheap, but the pizza is well worth the price. Especially the buffalo chicken pizza. When I review italian restaurants I always comment on the base of almost every other dish... The red sauce, aka gravy. LaPiazza has a really nice, heartwarming sauce- sweet, not too garlicky not too much basil. Family friendly, very busy yet have never felt rushed by the wait staff. Sometimes there isn't enough time between apps and salad/soup but they've never rushed me with the entree. Large portions, always walking out with leftovers (which are just as amazing re-heated). Menu has enough choice for everyone. And OH dessert. I love love love. Eat half your entree and take it home so you save room for dessert. I will go back with much regularity. This place is worth the wait (or show up for Dinner at 3:30pm and you'll have a better chance for no wait and eat comfy while u watch everyone else pile in for the dinner rush) read more

Had a charity walk at Jones Beach and planned to take the team out afterwards for lunch. We were 17 altogether and called a scant 1/2 hour before arriving and this place was able to accommodate us. La Piazza like a few other places I've seen straddle the line between pizzeria and restaurant. More refined than a pizzeria but not quite as stuffy as a restaurant. The restaurant was large and the tables arranged so that you don't feel on top of other diners. It was clean and had a number of nice touches (ex. the belt driven ceiling fans). Ample parking in their lot and street parking didn't seem to be an issue either. The food was tasty and the service was attentive. The prices are very reasonable and I walked away surprised that my bill was a lot less than I had expected for such a large group. read more

However after that my husband and I wanted take out Italian so I had suggested this place,the reason for the 3 stars is because we had ordered about $70 in food dinners and appetizers,the price was not the issue,I called to order and I specifically asked the girl on the phone to repeat my order 2x which she did,my husband got home and there were no salads and bread to go with dinners,I had even checked the menu to see what the diners came with,they usually come with bread and salad which it was supposed to!! I have been coming here with friends for many years, and while it was never outstanding, it was okay if we were in the mood for Italian food. Unfortunately lately, each time we ended our experience commenting how much worse the place has gotten, until today, when we swore to never return. The salads were soggy, and in parts brown. The wine had to be sent back, as it was stale and had a nauseating rotten taste and smell to it. The pasta, I could not even eat more than 2 bites of, but didn't want to seem like a complainer and send that back too, so I just pushed it to the edge of the table and let the waiter take it away. Both the shrimp and the asparagus in it from frozen and tasteless. We tried to perk up the end of the meal with at least getting a good cappuccino. No luck. You will get better tasting brown water coming out of your faucets after the water company had the pipes shut off for a while, than what this awful mess was. Honestly, not one aspect of our meal was even semi decent. I felt bad for our poor waiter having to complain to him, because clearly it was not his fault. read more
