    California Burrito no beans
    Rachel L.

A 3.5 would be a more accurate rating for the food but I'm rounding up. I got the california burrito with carne asada. Right off the bat, I found the tortilla to be too thick which masked all the flavors of the filling. Once you get past the first few bites it gets better though. The meat was nicely seasoned which I liked but not as tender as I hoped. I also think putting actual fries inside the burrito as advertised instead of chunks of potato would have elevated the burrito. It was an overall decent burrito but I have definitely had better. The salsas were also a bit watery but definitely made it better; I liked the green one more. Tried the horchata here as well and it was nice and cinnamon-y but not overpowering. The food wasn't too expensive considering its location! The lady who took our order was really sweet. Our orders came out within 5-10 minutes. The location is obviously a plus as it's a super quick walk to Mission Beach. Makes this a great spot for grab and go food for the beach. The inside houses a few seats as well; very casual space that looks like it's been open for a while.

Got beef taquitos and a chicken quesadilla. Super close/convenient when you get hungry while on the beach. Friendly and quick service! There is a cozy inside seating area and tables outside too.

I always visit here on trips to SD. Service is great. First time trying refried beans and the pickled carrots. Tasty! And yesterday I had the pozole. Omg. Hot and spicy. Pork was juicy and tender. Definitely a stop.

    Ham Breakfast Burrito

I had a very good breakfast burrito from this small La Perlita Mexican Eatery in the heart of Mission Beach, San Diego. The burrito consisted of scrambled eggs, ham, cheese, and house potatoes wrapped in a flour tortilla. Although not that very large, the was very good in flavor, and came with a good amount of ham and well scrambled eggs. The potatoes were good and the cheese well melted into the burrito. The flour tortillas was of good quality, and the red hot sauce I had with the burrito was good. The young lady at the counter was friendly. They location is small, but they do offer inside and outside seating.

Wasn't great. Super burrito was very average for 20$. Had to get halfway through my burrito to get to the meat they skimped out on and only to find out they gave me the wrong meat. Very disappointing. Not a one because the lady was sweet. Other than that I wouldn't go to this place when you have so many better options next door. Just really upset I had to pay 20$ for something so below average and not filling.

I told my friend the food was worth the wait. After an hour we got sat at the bar and our first server was friendly. There was a transition of servers (not sure if he left for the day or went on lunch) and the new server would check on everyone at the bar except us. My water remained empty for most of the meal. The bartenders in front of us were clearly having a conversation and I didn't want to interrupt. My friend claimed her Irish coffee was sour? And didn't realize cheese came on a side of eggs (she should've checked when she ordered but the server never clarified either). We weren't checked on during the meal until the bill came and by then we just wanted to leave. I ordered the fluffy pancakes and found an egg shell inside. The cracking of eggshells in my mouth made me loose my appetite. We paid (still tipped of course) and left. It was great the first time and mediocre the second time. I prefer consistently in service, especially if I'm waiting an hour to be seated.

Dennise seated us and was so kind, she even shared a few of her favorite menu items since it was our first visit. Our server Anelle was great as well. Cramped and loud, but nicely decorated and serving solid authentic meals. Mexican Latte-9/10: Pretty straightforward. A solid, nostalgic spiced coffee. Mazapan Latte-10/10: A novelty menu item, both nostalgic and tasty. With a sweetened condensed milk rim and mazapan dust, this sweet coffee is a must order. Chilaquiles-10/10: Cocina 35 knows how to throw down the best Mexican breakfast item: the chilaquiles. The Verde was good but didn't pack much heat. The Salsa Secreta was our favorite; a creamy 3-chile salsa with an artichoke flavor, this one packs an enjoyable amount of heat. The Chipotle was another yummy and creamy option, making your nose run but still very enjoyable. Frijoles Puercos-7/10: They were pretty standard. I've definitely had better. They served their purpose as a good side. Concha Rellena-7.5/10: Another creative menu item. Whipped cream and whole strawberries sandwiched between two french toast-style concha halves and drenched in cajeta. It was sweet and warm, but would've been more enjoyable with fresher and/or sliced strawberries. Fun to order, but a regular concha is better suited for enjoying with your coffee. Service-6/10: Again, Cocina 35 gets packed, so service isn't as attentive. Our party had to order and wait for water, ask for refills, call the server over for more orders and again for the bill, and wouldn't speak to us in Spanish. I witnessed other tables be spoken to in Spanish, but upon ordering I'd only be responded to in English. I know I'm a white Mexican, but native tongue is nice when I make it clear I'd like to order in Spanish. Overall, a fun spot with solid menu items. The samplers are pricey but probably the best bang for your buck. They do the classics very well, and are very much worth your visit!

"Over medium" eggs came barely cooked, still had clear egg gel floating around. The table next to us had the same issue. The fried chicken, which is beautiful looking, was strangely flavorless. Another table was also talking about this issue. Bacon was way overcooked as well. I also really dislike when food timing for a table is way off. I rather it stay in the kitchen under a heat lamp and come together rather that spend 5 minutes staring at my food being polite. So, for a fun "wow that's a ton of food" experience this is it. But I much prefer quality ingredients and attention to detail and flavor over unfinishable portions at a premium price point ($100 after tip for 2 ppl).
