We ordered a few starters, including empanadas, a stuffed tomato, and deep-fried mozzarella sticks. The empanadas were decent but nothing memorable. The stuffed tomato was very basic, and the mozzarella sticks were huge but had an odd flavor to the point that none of us ate them. The plates were cleared without any comment, which felt a bit inattentive. Service was fine overall, but since this was a recommended stop for empanadas, it ended up being a letdown and not somewhere I'd return.

The reviews saying it is all local and authentic, sure seemed to be accurate from what we could tell. The waiter said he didn't speak much English, but he was great and very helpful in interpreting the menu and guiding us to really yummy, authentic experiences. We had three different empanadas to start with and each featured a surprising element that brought a new life to these little pockets of sunshine and comfort. We had an amazing baked potato with spinach, cheese and pumpkin. Then a stew of sweet potato, chopped steak in a terrific stew and a topping of endless, glorious cheese. We both ate grandly for $44US and had leftovers to share with others. Really terrific place we would highly recommend and come back to!!

The menu is all over the map - with something for everyone - but the things I focused on over 2 visits were traditional offerings and a sweet potato dish that might not be traditional but ought to be. On my first visit I tried a traditional Argentinan stew called Locro. Baked in a clay oven and served piping hot, Locro featured white corn, beans, squash, and meat. I was enjoying it well enough until the sweet potato dish arrived at which point all bets were off; that dish got all of my attention. The menu features a "wood-fired potato and sweet potato" category and it was from that small offering that I'd opted for the sweet potato topped with creamed corn, honey, and walnuts. During my first visit - and even on the return visit - I'd have sworn this dish was covered in melted cheese. It was not. But the combination of flavors and textures was so immensely satisfying that I couldn't wait for a do-over. During my second visit I again ordered the amazing sweet potato (and a Northern-Style Tamale, a bottle of wine, and flan). Everything was, again, quite delicious but that sweet potato? It was fabulous and one of my top flavor sensations in a month of travel. Cumaná serves immensely satisfying food that differs from what you find elsewhere. You can go with pizzas and pastas but why, when the menu is filled with gems rarely found elsewhere. And as for that sweet potato? I never saw anything like it on any other menu. Miss it at your own peril.

My grandmother ordered a milanesa, and we specifically asked for it to be very well done because she does not like raw meat. When it arrived, the meat was raw. We mentioned it to the waiter and asked if they could please cook it more. When it came back, the breading was completely burnt, as if they had put the milanesa back in the oven, but the meat was still not properly cooked. What was even more disappointing was that when we received the bill, we noticed that they had still charged us for the milanesa. We also noticed that they had charged a cubierto for my grandmother. When we questioned it, we were told it was because she had eaten bread. Considering the experience we had and the fact that her meal was not properly prepared, we asked if they could please remove the charge, and they did. I want to emphasize that we truly love Faena and have had good experiences here before, which is why we came back. The atmosphere is beautiful and the location is very convenient, but unfortunately, today's service and the handling of the situation did not meet the standard we have come to expect from this place. It's a shame because we really love coming here, and we hope this was simply an isolated experience.

The hotel recommended Amici Miei. We walked to the other end of the little plaza and located this cute little Italian restaurant on the second floor with some balconies over looking the plaza with tables. The location is spectacular. Very quaint, old school feel inside an old building. The balconies are small but hold table for 4. On a nice day like when we went (it was about 85 degrees F) was nice to look outside onto the plaza and people watch. As we ordered food, the quality of the dishes were top notch. Everything was fresh and tasted superb. The flavours were rich, not salty, not over/under cooked. All the dished that came out were nice and hot and tasted amazing. The bread served was fresh, crunchy outside, soft inside with butter and some red wine. This place if you didn't know you were sitting in Buenos Aires, you'd think you were in Italy! Service was great, very prompt and nice. As with any Argentine or foreign restaurant, you have to ask for your bill if you want to leave, otherwise they just let you be. Overall, I do believe this place is truly 5 star rating, food, quality, taste, ambiance and service. You won't be disappointed if you go here and the price point is very good for the food, amount and quality.

I arrived right when they opened at 8 and was the only one there until a few people trickled in around 8:30 or so. By the time I left at 9:15, more people were arriving. I'd expect by 10, it would be packed. Before my meal arrived, they brought out a basket of garlic bread, focaccia and breadsticks with a garbanzo bean spread. I also ordered a cold Patagonia cerveza while I waited for my main course. I had green Papardelle pasta with mushrooms, bacon and cherry tomatoes in a light olive oil type sauce. It was very enjoyable as compared to a heavy cream sauce. The only thing missing was some parmesan cheese, which was provided before my meal arrived. Unlike most every other dinner I've had in BA, I left feeling satisfied, not like I was about to burst! The service was stellar and very friendly. Fabulous vermutaria in the San Telmo neighborhood…read more They offer all sorts of wines, and various mixed drinks. But you would be out of your mind to leave Cafe San Juan without having their homemade house vermouth. I have had house vermouth all over Spain, where many bars do their own vermouth just on general principles. Nothing comes close to the house vermouth at Cafe San Juan. Vermouth in Argentina (and in Spain) is often served with soda and ice as a form of a spritzer. A good vermouth is designed to let the ice cubes open up the taste. Done right, there should be BOTH the taste of the wine and the taste of the herbs and spices. It is hard to pull the spice elements out of a commercial vermouth such as a Martini and Rossi. Many homemade vermouths do worse rather than better than Martini and Rossi on this key aspect of what makes vermouth vermouth. Cafe San Juan's vermouth has the most powerful spice taste of any vermouth that I have ever had. And it is a suave mellow harmonious full taste. Imagine Mom's apple pie or a savory sauerbraten. Having those flavors show up in a wine is a rarity. Having those flavors work in a wine is an even greater rarity. Cafe San Juan's vermouth does all that. * * * This is a full service restaurant as well as a bar. The food is absolutely outstanding. My wife adored her merluzon (hake in English), with lentils and capers. I had an osso buco to die for. American veal is nearly worthless and our beef is only ho hum. Argentina has extraordinary beef - so getting good veal is not too hard. In an osso buco, the basic meat itself has to carry a lot of the flavor. This veal with veal bone did just fine. As for the tomatoes, anchovies and crispy polenta, all soaked up in veal gravy ... Just say no more. This was happiness on a plate. An appetizer of burrata cheese on a grilled mortadella proves a basic point. Mortadella is Italian bologna. There is no way to get around it. Bologna goes from stupid school lunch sandwich meat to pure divinity when you put the bologna in a saute pan, put it on the stove and give it a char. The same applies even more so for mortadella. Even more happiness on a plate. * * * Still as good as the food may be ... You are here for the house vermouth ... The house vermouth ... The house vermouth ... You will have many fine meat and fish dishes in your time. A legendary vermouth is forever.
