This is a wonderful spot. We are staying in the neighborhood and needed a place to eat some lunch. It's interesting how the Spanish dine so late. We got there at 1 pm and were the first people there to eat lunch. Others were outside having a drink. We were quickly seated, and we ordered some white wine, salads and egg dish and a hamburger. The salads came out with some bread. Very nice portions. Later; the second dishes arrived. Also very nice portions. All of the staff was very nice and attentive. They even brought a small ramekin of gum drops for our son. That was a nice touch. In any case, all the flavors were delicious. The prices are hard to beat, too. Each course was $16.50 euro for two plates, a dessert and a drink. This place is highly recommended. read more

We went here on recommendation and it did not disappoint. We were gifted with the best view of Madrid in an awesome setting. You get to get a drink and kick back while soaking in the views. I would have spent hours there if we weren't so limited in time. We just had a little time to relax and have a drink. I totally recommend this place. I highly recommend coming here if you're in Madrid. It's only 3 euros to get a ticket to access the rooftop terrace, which will give you a beautiful view of the city. I'm used to being treated well when going to fine dining establishments. Maybe because these establishments hire staff who are used to serving clientele who, like myself, try to be polite, well spoken and dress appropriately for my venue. I'd heard this was an absolutely great place to have lunch while in Madrid so I took a cab straight here with my wife to see what the fuss was about. Unfortunately that is where things went south. Firstly, the entrance of the cafe from the main road has a huge sign telling you it is a service entrance and the proper main entrance is from the side street. We did the "right" thing and went to the side door and found out there was a 1 euro entry fee per person to just eat in the restaurant and another 3 euro to go to the rooftop (which is spectacular and well worthwhile but not the subject of this review :)) As we entered the restaurant in front of a local person and waited for the attention of the waiter we were shocked and embarrassed to see this "waiter" talk right over us and ask the local where he would like to eat. Luckily the local fellow had generations-more class than the waiter (middle aged and bitter spaniard) and told him to serve us first because we were there first (rocket science right? ). The only possible reason I could give for him to do that was because he was a racist a-hole. We do our best to not look or act like your typical cashed up chinese mainlanders but are respectful Australians who are taught to base our opinion of everyone not because of their race or religion but the way they act. Anyway, the waiter was quite aggrieved when the local told him to serve us first and so he spent the rest of the lunchtime as far away from us as possible and got the other waiters to serve us whenever he could. BOTTOM LINE: IF YOU ARE NOT WHITE AND YOU COME HERE, DONT EXPECT ADEQUATE LEVELS OF SERVICE FROM THIS ARROGANT PRICK WAITER. JUST IGNORE HIM AND GET SERVICE FROM SOMEONE ELSE. Secondly, while having our 3 course meal we saw countless people walk through the "service" door (even a group of 6!) from the main street and get a table and NOT get told to use the side door. Therefore I'd recommend that you all just use the "service" door when u come here as the side door is for suckers who don't know any better (me). Food wise our first courses of prawn vermicelli and savoury pastry were quite nice but the second course of ox (the most inedible and smelly piece of meat I've had in memory) and tempura fish left a bad taste in our mouths. The positives? The wine bar/cabinet is divine and worth visiting on its own. The art work on the ceiling is also spectacular, with other sculptures scattered around the room and if you are close enough to the windows you can also get a good view of granvia road and allcala road. Despite my negative review definitely come here if you're doing the tourist rounds of Madrid and follow up your coffee or lunch with a visit to the rooftop and you won't regret it. read more

I love this place. It was my cafe as a student 17 years ago & from what I've heard, remains the best place for the Carneval Bal. We were hungry after a visit to the Cibeles galleries & paid the 1EC entrance fee. Initially, we were going to be good & order 1-2 small plates; I ordered 5 & the maître d made a gordo comment (dude, you, of all people, really have no right to call us fat). The canapés/pinxos were 2 pieces/3,50EC. 2 had salmon, 2 had Brie, one had jamon. I'm fairly certain a potato chip basket was served. The wine was good, service prompt, atmosphere incredible. They had literally 8 of the 40 things available on the menu and no decency to explain this before hand. Extremely rude staff and after not having what we wanted (we tried to order 4 different things) we were fed up. You also can not share food here. We eventually just asked for wine and were told to move to a different area to drink even with 10 available tables. We were sent to the turf lounge area...lame. Great view but just come for that. Terrible place to eat or rather be told you can not. My girlfriends Spanish is more than decent and they still treated us like shit. Do not go here for food. Just go up check out the view and order a drink. Way over priced as well. I don't ever write Yelp reviews as I feel establishments should know how to treat guests but this was awful. read more

The four stars are for the location...you cannot go wrong with a nice long set of chairs/tables all facing one of the main promenade streets in Madrid. The coffee is like most of the coffee in Madrid, best ordered as espresso straight up or cafe con leche. Skip the sugary cappuccinos on the menu. The food isn't anything to write home about but it's passable and worth ordering for the lovely fresh breeze and people watching that comes with the setting. read more

We arrived around 10pm without reservations and they sat us right away. The service for the most part was ok and the menu choices were not far behind. I ordered the fried chicken salad, which it was not impressive. There was a lot of "gourmet mayo" overshadowing the taste of the chicken. The prices were decent, about 20 Euros per person. It's probably the most elegant and romantic cafes in town. The marble statue in the center with a sultry naked woman stretching sensuously across it, the crystal chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, the marble columns, the large windowpanes everything about this place makes you feel as if you've gone back in time. Not as far as prices go, though. If you get there on a crowded day, you might have trouble getting a waiter's attention, and do not forget that there is an entrance fee to the Circulo de Bellas Artes, wherein this cafeteria is, so be ready to pay for your art. Still, it's a great choice for an evening or afternoon. You can get a coffee or drink and then catch some of the exhibits in the building, or see a live performance. read more

The service, if you are an American traveler you will likely feel like the staff is rude. They expect you to order from only glancing at the menu outside, provide no follow up during your meal and have no care for what their facial expressions convey to customers. This was one of the worst restaurant experiences I've had while traveling internationally. Starting with the manager who was rude and ignored us because we were Americans. Secondly, the service was extremely slow and they were not busy. We waited 20 minutes just to place our drink order. Once we ordered they brought the wrong food but they tried to convince us it wasn't (that chicken was bananas.) When they replaced it, it came undercooked. To top it all off it was well overpriced.
