We had to wait for our apartment suite to be ready for checkin and decided to come here for a quick bite. I was excited to see churros on the menu and decided to order some along with their hot chocolate. OMG!! Get this!! As I am writing this review, I had already visited Chocolatería San Ginés. IMO, the churros and hot chocolate is superior here. Both items were served piping hot. What a treat. My son also loved his grilled ham and cheese sandwich (bikini trufado). Said it was the best he has ever had. Service was okay. Some of the staff members were friendlier than others so I guess it depends who you get. read more

Popped in for a quick lunch while in the area - it seems well located with outdoor seating and spacious indoor seating as well. Staff was friendly, took a bit of time to get attended to at first but wine & salad came out quickly after we ordered. This was one of the best Caesar salads we've had in a while!! Flavors were unique and robust (the dressing had a peanut sauce flavor so more of a unique take on Caesar salads) and chicken did not disappoint. Again, we came in for a quick lunch and did not explore much of the menu but this was a great introduction to their quality! read more

This is arguably the best located café in Madrid. It is one of the reminders of the tertulia cafe tradition; normally spacious cafes with small tables (veladores) where intellectuals, professionals, politicians and artists would periodically meet to address critical issues. This tradition was crucial in shaping Spain's modernity during the republic that abruptly ended with Franco's dark fourth years of dictatorship. As such, Cafe Comercial survived as a quite classical service cafe for many years until a recent update that tried to turn it into more of a hip place. Not fully achieved. The place lacks identity. The decoration is a bit of cliche, and the new lighting, bathroom and furniture elements are quite previsible and definitively not reaching the level of the original cafe's design. With embarrassing episodes that get close to thematized design, like the presence of a fotomatón. The food is equally not finding its place. The expectable croquetas etc. thing. It was a good idea to update, but it would have taken a more careful consideration to what café comercial was to do it properly. read more

Loved this place! From the ambience to the food to the service, it was all wonderful. The restaurant is very old, but has almost a revitalized retro feel to it. The bar area also has a much different vibe than the dine-in section - the bar was much livelier, while the dining area was a bit more relaxed. The dress code seemed to be respectable casual, as I don't think business casual was quite necessary. For food, we started with some Iberico ham which was obviously amazing. We also got some patatas bravas which were perfectly cooked and served with delicious aioli. Our main course was the seafood rice, which requires a minimum of two people. It was like a richer, creamier paella. Incredibly tasty, and would honestly probably recommend this kind of rice over paella... For dessert, we ordered a cheesecake, which was also great. Light and fluffy, with some fruit and ice cream. The wine was good too, though I'm not enough of a wino to explain flavors, etc. Overall, highly recommend this place! read more

A 131 year old restaurant? Yes please! Conveniently located next to a metro station is Café Comercial. From the outside, I had concerns this would be too touristy and/or too pricey. There are two sides of the restaurant- a bar and restaurant through another set of doors. I casually walked by twice to weigh my options before committing to breakfast. The dining area is filled with tables. Due to its seeming popularity, sitting at a table for four when there are two of you is discouraged. I was a party of one so seated at a two-top. Shortly after, a couple seated themselves at a four-top. The waitress politely asked them to move to a table for two but the couple refused as they said most tables were empty. It was entertaining to watch the interaction, especially when the restaurant proceeded to fill up ten minutes later only validating the waitress's statement. She provided excellent service. The food is great. I ordered a coffee with milk and a open-faced sandwich of bread with cheese, avocado and turkey. I hadn't realized the sandwich would be cold or that I'd ordered turkey for that matter, but it could have been a result of my stubbornness to use an English menu instead of Spanish to prove I could order something... regardless, it was delicious! read more

I often stopped by here for breakfast as it is not far from the area where I was staying. I would certainly recommend Cafe Comercial if you are in the area. The food is good, basic fare that is typical of many traditional cafes around Madrid. My favourite is the fried bread with egg and ham. Cafe Comercial has a wonderful airy interior and is apparently the oldest of its kind still operating in Madrid. It now has an internet cafe upstairs and wifi connection. read more

Excellent shrimp croquettes and calamari sandwich! Grab a chair outside to people watch. Madly obsessed with croquettes!!! And of course chocolate and churros. This food is brilliant and delicious. El sandwich noruego no venía con las alcaparras ni el huevo duro que ofrece el menu, y cuando pedimos que lo repongan advirtieron que tardaría media hora en hacer el huevo. 2. El de atún era un atún de lata directo en un pan bimbo cuando ofrecía un pan de amapolas. 3. Y se botaron con la ensalada, al no haber canónigos ofrecieron iceberg o tomate. Decidimos por el tomate pero fue un desastre la ensalada -ver foto!-... En fin la tortilla no estaba mal y las bravas regulares. One of the oldest cafes in Madrid. Classic for coffee. Cortado, cappucino, cafe bombon (espresso with sweetended condensed milk), cafe con nata (espresso with whipped cream)... mmmmmmmm. Plus the sandwiches, which are simple yet tasty. A bit crowded inside for groups of more than 4 or so, though, and you do pay more inside vs. eating at the bar outside. Free wifi is a nice touch though. Still, very, very classy inside. Whether you appreciate coffee or not, Cafe Comercial is worth a stop outside in the bar for bombon and a few minutes to relax. If you *do* appreciate coffee, then you might find it a little slice of heaven. read more

Food ok but not stellar. Service was very disappointing. The head waiter deposited us in our seats and took our order but never returned from that point on. Forgot part of our order and never checked to see if the runners got things right. He wandered past several times but avoided eye contact conspicuously, compared to the attention he gave to select other tables; interestingly we overheard a patron nearby complaining to him about the service, and the table immediately next to ours waited longer than we did to be served. We have had so many wonderful experiences throughout Spain that this one stands out for all the wrong reasons- the bar is higher than the waitstaff here could reach. read more
