Chilaquiles and plantains are as good as any I've had. The staff is delightful and the food delicious. My new favorite breakfast place.

The food was amazing seasoned well, very tasty with toppings, diced onions, and cilantro, green salsa perfect portion size. Food was so good we went back the next day and it was the same everything tasted great! The service was good staff was friendly there was a long line but you were served pretty fast or you can pre-order and pick up. The restaurant has a beautiful outdoor patio where you can dine in also look forward to dining in soon.

The staff were amazing and so helpful. They have picnic tables and other tables outside with beautiful greenery. I ordered the chicken quesadilla which was loaded with this ooey gooey cheese that was perfect. I also got two of their crispy catfish tacos which was topped with onions, cilantro, and pomegranate seeds which added some nice acidity and sweetness to the tacos. I used their very tasty green sauce on top of them all and it was so delicious. For drinks, I got their classic margarita and their mangonada freeze. I know I will be back for sure. The only downside I must add about this place is their parking is very limited. Around noon, I had to park across the street at the gas station and walk across because the place was filled with cars already.

I wasn't looking for anything specific to eat but this place called to me so I whipped into the parking lot and headed in! This is such a homey type of place that puts a lot of pride and joy in their food and showing off Latin culture. Los Alvarez Exxpress Latin Food is a local mom and pop spot on the corner of Gardere and Burbank next to the S&P Food Store/Chevron gas station. I wasn't exactly sure what to expect going in but what I got was a lot of warmth and comfort. This is a place for Latin locals to relax and get a bit of familiarity and good food. I dined in and ordered the Granadas Catrachas. Catrachas are traditionally known as Honduran tostadas. Los Alvarez puts their spin on it by using Granada flour to create a puff pocket and stuff it with meat, rice and cheese and serve it with encurtido (Honduran pickled vegetables). I ordered one with chicken and one with beef. The serving was huge and absolutely delicious! I was only able to eat one. That, on top of the chips and salsa and black bean dip had me full for the rest of the day! Everyone that works there is friendly and for a second you don't feel like you're in Baton Rouge. This is a magical place.

I guess I'm used to the more Americanized dips--this queso was literally queso (cheese) melted and served in a sizzling fajita skillet. I didn't dislike it, but for me, it was kind of bland. Plus, you'll want to eat it as quickly as possible before it firms up and you can't dip it anymore. But, not too quickly or you will lose some taste buds. Aside from the queso, I went the Honduran route for my meal, ordering three things that I thought would be MUCH smaller since they were quite inexpensive. Having eaten my fill of chips, queso, and salsa (which had quite the kick), I was only able to finish one of the three items I ordered--the tortilla con quesillo. I also ordered a cheese pupusa and a tamal hondureño. I could have made a meal from the tamale alone. It was wrapped in a leaf and filled with pork, green peas, and I believe rice and potatoes. Everything was made fresh to order and served "surface of the sun"-hot. In addition to what I ordered (plus the queso), my daughter had a steak burrito and a barbacoa gordita. With tip, it was under $40, and we brought probably half of it home. The server was friendly. I had only been here once quite some time ago, but I hope to return soon and more often!

I haven't been here for at least seven maybe possibly 10 years since Renee Ortlieb was the owner…read more The reason I came back to try it today was because after a visit to La Mexicana a few days ago only to learn it has closed (and it had become my staple for the area of authentic Mexican). To my surprise, la Tienda Latina is a Honduran restaurant. To my taste Honduran food is blander then real Mexican food. After reading the reviews, I ordered a Mexican coke and an appetizer while I looked at the menu. The friendly English speaking waitress brought salsa and chips to the table, along with my Coke and ample sized appetizer. Shortly after she returned with the Honduran tamale ( chose pork vs chicken). She also brought two condiment bottles of homemade sauces, both green tomatillo and red chili .. both very standard at authentic places. The salsa and chips were nice and fresh tasting and I particularly liked the green sauce with the tamale sauce. Realizing how much food this was already I decided just to order a side of refried beans and some Mexican Crema, which was actually perfect, and I had food to bring home because I only ate half of the tamale and about a fourth of the beans which were delicious. The tamale did need extra flavor although it was packed with potatoes and rice and chunks of cooked roast type pork, and a few peas I think. For the price I think it's quite a bargain to fill up on. However, I filled up quickly by drinking a second Mexican Coke, and had an extra order of the salsa with the chips. I dipped the chips in the beans which were absolutely probably my favorite dish of all. La Tienda won't replace the flavors and menu formerly offered at La Mexicana. I'll have to find another place that has similar type food, but I did enjoy my experience here. However Hondorian food isn't what I get cravings for. Yet, the restaurant was tidy and clean, although I didn't go to the restroom, which is always very telling of how clean a restaurant is. Btw, I know Mexican cokes are usually very pricey, but the idea of paying eight dollars for two medium (quantity) cokes is annoying, but the price of on tap cold drinks has gone up significantly as well around the Baton Rouge area, so often I just have to order water in order to enjoy a sit down meal eating out without paying a total cost of what I used to consider to be premium dinner time treat when I'm just looking for a quick afternoon lunch. Due to my budget lunch (appetizer & 2 sides) selection today I went ahead & ordered a 2nd bottle, and quite enjoyed it, and therefore I have leftovers to enjoy later. I will keep reading other food reviews made here so I can return again and try something else and just maybe I'll find a new favorite!

Immediately upon walking in, I loved all of the colors and the vibes of this Mexican restaurant. When you sit down, they bring chips and salsa to your table. I wasn't a huge fan of the salsa or the chips. The chips had some seasoning on them and to me, it didn't mix well with the salsa. The salsa was really thin, and I prefer a chunky salsa with a salted thick chip lol. I was feeling adventurous and got the French toast on the brunch menu. It was delicious! The berry compote and the two different syrups paired really well with it. The bacon that it came with was perfection. I ate every last bite. I did have a bite of my friends tacos, and they were good but on smaller side in my opinion. Our waitress was great and there were plenty of tvs to watch while we waited. But, we never waited long for anything!

This is definitely Tex-Mex rather than traditional Mexican, but it hits the spot if that's what you're craving. The real standout is the decor and ambiance, especially after renovating and expanding. It's a fantastic space to hang out and chitchat with friends over dinner. The service has always been great and efficient for me. I can't remember the server I often got - maybe Joshua? Their yearly Cinco de Mayo party is also always fun and a vibe! Overall, still a solid spot in Baton Rouge for Tex-Mex and close to LSU campus.
