It was a fantastic, flavorful surprise. As you can see from the photo, my wife thoroughly enjoyed diving right into that massive foot-long! Thanks to my YouTube habit, I found this quaint, tiny, family-run Korean grocery in a travel video on inexpensive meals in Monterey. The travelers praised the freshness of the ready-to-eat refrigerated banchan dishes and the just made kimbap rolls availabe for purchase on the checkout counter. Perfect for my use case. I parked on the street around the corner which was easy to find & free for 2 hours. The store is small and packed with anything you can imagine from an Asian grocery. The upright cold cases are toward the back left, and the frozen proteins are in a deep freezer near the checkout counter. When I arrived around 1pm on a summer Tuesday, no one was in the store, but I could hear Korean voices in conversation from the back room. I did my shopping in the banchan case (pickled cucumber & kelp salad - yum!) then poked my head through that open doorway to ask, "May I purchase kimbap?" The grandmother / proprietor jumped up to say, "Sure! Are you ready to check out?" The plastic-wrapped roll was about 7-8 inches long and stuffed with typical kimbap ingredients: nori, rice, krab, carrot, daikon, tofu). A filling meal for me at $2. With my $4 salad, the whole cost was $6 and I had leftover salad for picnicking the next day. Sorry, I failed to take any pictures (bad Yelper!), but if you've ever had ready-to-eat foods from a Korean grocer, you know what to expect.

We have been going to Noodle Bar (NB) for a few years now. They are still in a very narrow strip…read moremall with somewhat limited parking, but we have been able to get a spot every time. The area is still pretty sketchy and since COVID there is still no seating at the restaurant so plan to get your food to go and take it back to a safe place to enjoy it--we do not recommend eating in you car. We tried that before and the homeless people walking by made it super uncomfortable. On this visit, a guy who belonged in a psychiatric hospital was yelling so loud while crossing the street that two of us left NB to go outside and see what the problem was--just a sick man yelling so went back inside. Despite all that, NB does great business, and as other Yelpers have noted, NB food quantity is still very good for the price. Prices have gone up but not as bad as elsewhere and it is still a good deal for what you get. The food quality really depends on personal taste. We live in San Gabriel, so there is no shortage of stellar Asian food there and NB cannot compete. However, we really like NB's curry chicken. Their noodle dishes really vary in quality, but none of them are bad, all are at least ok, and some are good. This time we also got a chow mien. It was basically fried ramen noodles, not chow mien noodles. It was not stellar, but hey we still liked the flavor and enjoyed it. We tried for the first time the catfish nuggets. It is basically what is called salt and pepper fish filet elsewhere, but with catfish at NB. It's fried, salty fish so what's not to like. It comes with what appeared to be sweet chili sauce, but we did not try that. Business was so good that after trying to call in our order twice, which we definitely recommend doing, no one answered. We drove over and put in our order in person and saw that they were super busy--the lady taking orders missed at least one call in just while taking our order in person. Her and the people cooking were working super hard--massive props and respect to them for working hard to create a successful and long standing business in the community. We will definitely be back again and definitely recommend you give them a try. I believe the only or best (lol) menu photos were the ones I posted about 3 years ago and so I am posting and update if those with this revues and to their business. Last thoughts, they are cash only so come prepared, they have boba drinks, and they have dessert (never tried that). Give them a try!

Definitely not my own, because the length and colors are off and it was in the middle of the food. I tried going back to them, but alas, they are hair ENTHUSIASTS here. Folks, what about opening a salon? Or using hair nets? I'm sorry for the rudeness, but there just isn't any way else to say it, because twice is pretty strange. (Three, if you count someone I know.) I went back a year later hoping things would improve. Damn, and I do intensely crave that soup. I'm sure I'll give in to my craving eventually, so wish me luck.
