I was surprised at the current menu after having been coming here for years. Gone are the frituras de malanga, the fricasé de cerdo, and other truly well made Cuban dishes. Besides a couple of Cuban dishes, now they have items of Mexican, Peruvian, and Venezuelan origin. Nothing wrong with that, except that I expected a full range of Cuban dishes like they used to have. Live Salsa Music & Drinks at Madrid's 'La Negra Tomasa' We popped into La Negra Tomasa, just off Madrid's central Puerta del Sol, for the the Cuban / Puerto Rican-style bands they have every night. It was an upbeat scene, with friendly staff and customers, a three-woman group pumping out an infectious Latin groove, mojitos, daiquiris & cervesas, and people dancing. It got crowded, and people having dinner at the tables seemed to have trouble getting the two or three servers' attention, but we had a good spot standing at the bar, directly in front of the band, and ordered from the smiling bartenders. Didn't have anything to eat, but they specialize in an approximation of seafood-forward tropical Caribbean fare. Thought it was a really fun spot. We'll be stopping in again for the live music during our two-months in Madrid. read more

We went to Madrid for my bday and I wanted to also hive some present and nice experience to my partner who is from Cuba. And I know that he does sometimes miss the food and the authenticity. I have watched some youtube videos (well from 2 years ago) that recommendation this place and we also got this recommendation from other cubans. Unfortunately I was not impressed, more disappointed. It is still somewhat Cuban place with good cocktail and live music, but packed and I think that due to the fact it's in the centrum it will always be packed. However we also wanted to experience the food and have local beer. The beer was not on the selection anymore (maybe because of current situation in Cuba - who knows) but the food was also not authentic or really good. We had yuka - it was dry. Rice and meet - also dry. If you are looking just life music and cocktail bar - this "cuban" experience will do it. But if you know Cuba well, this is not the place to go. read more

Very good Cuban Food, great ambiance, and live music. Kitchen closes at 11:30pm. Appetizers: Frituras de Malanga were very good. Crisp outside and mushy inside. Melt in the mouth treat. Chicharrones, Pork Cracklings with Meat we're well seasoned and cooked. Daiquiris, really Cuban drink. Santera Dish: Picadillo, Arroz, Frijoles Negros & Tostones. The Picadillo, the best in a restaurant that I have ever eaten. Tasted homemade. The Black Beans, excellent. Bisteck Empanizado: ( Escalooe Mikanesa) came with Fries & Salad, it was ok. Veguero: another hit Ropa Vieja in a savory tomato sauce with Tamal & Moros. Dessert Cascos de Guayaba & Cream Cheese. Not a tapas bar and I was too early for the music performance, but I arrived in a decent time that I actually managed to get a table! Good service from the waitress who was friendly but didn't understand too much English. I managed to get through with "Cerveza" and pointing at something on the menu that looked good. It turned out to be a huge portion of roast pork loin, served with white rice and black beans. The pork was very tasty and pretty moist. The black beans were terrific. Better than anything I had in ten years of living in Fort Lauderdale, I think. You do have to get here early, or perhaps book a reservation if you want to enjoy the music. read more

Viva Cuba in Madrid! Stumbled upon this place looking to hear live music and it didn't disappoint us. Music didn't start until 11pm ish... we had a table in the back of the restaurant close to the band. We started with some appetizers made with yuca and some tostones (felt like we were back in Miami) everyone who works there is from Cuba. The band was awesome and played some music we danced too. It was low key, didn't turn into a club atmosphere but more like a Latin lounge. The food was good, got a Cuban sandwich and a little espresso aka cortadito .. which helped me dance the night away. Wine was affordable and mojitos were too sweet for my taste buds. If you are looking for live entertainment without having to pay the ridiculous show fee some of these flamenco restaurants do then this is your spot. Live Latin music, wine and fun times. Staff is very friendly and attentive. Would recommend this spot to people of all ages. read more

Service was beyond horrible. The ambiance not too bad. We ordered mariquitas for appetizers and they never came. The drinks were slowly coming out one by one at a very slow pace. The food also came out very slow. By the time the last plate came the first person served was done. My wife ordered the lobster and after a while the waiter comes and says they didn't have anymore lobster. Minutes later , surprise, the lobster is served. Not sure what happened there. The server was extremely rude . The mojitos were horrible and the other drinks weren't good either. This place has rude employees and horrible service . I definitely don't recommend. read more

I honestly can't say enough great things about this place. I'm originally from the Caribbean, so after 3 weeks of tapas and Spanish food, I was craving something from home. I was recommended this restaurant by a friend of mine who studied abroad in Spain for a couple of months. As soon as I walked in I could smell the delicious food. If you are not familiar with Cuban food, don't fret. The menu was in English and Spanish and also had pictures of every item. I took a couple of Australian friends with me and they found it easier to order (with some of my help of course). The first thing I noticed was the amount of mojitos that were being prepped at the bar. I figured they must be very good and popular here if they are preparing that many. After we all scarfed our dishes we decided to order mojitos. The food, by the way, was phenomenal. Everyone cleaned their plates dry. I was in heaven. But back to the mojitos.... We ordered a round of 6 mojitos. They were fantastic! Such good flavor! Well, let me tell you HOW GOOD the mojitos were that we ended up with TWENTY NINE, yes 29 mojitos on the final check. The only reason we did not stay longer was that after 11:30pm, the mojitos were no longer on special because the live music began to play. Before 11:30pm the mojitos were 6€ each. The live music was great, we should have stayed longer, but 170€ later on just mojitos we decided to go drink somewhere cheaper. I will definitely come back to this place and I recommend it to anyone who has maybe had too many tapas on their trip. read more

I am married to a Cuban so while in Madrid we thought this would be a great dinner. Not so. We came at 8pm and there were only 2 other tables occupied, not unusual for Madrid. The service was awful. We sat for several minutes watching the employees converse with each other until my husband waved over someone to take our order. We conversed in Spanish but our server spoke perfect English as well. The food was mediocre at best and again no follow up to see if we needed anything. We had ordered water with our wine but it never came. Overall a very disappointing dinner. We did not stay for the music but since 90% of the tables had a reserved sign, that must be their draw. We would not recommend if you are just looking for dinner. read more

Try at your own risk. I've watched my family make tostones (fried plantains) since I was a little girl, so I know what they're supposed to look like. Don't get confused - hard doesn't equal crispy. Those are the frozen plantains you buy at the supermarket and save to fry later. Go to a Dominican restaurant in Madrid or anywhere in the US and see the difference! But it wasn't so much the plantains that set me off, it was the service, the staff... It was mediocre service. The girl who served us looked like she didn't want to be there. The staff is not too friendly in general. It's a "Meh, I've been to so much better Cuban restaurants" kind of place. I went here with my buddy during our first week in Madrid. I came by recommendation of a friend. I'm Puerto Rican, so maybe my standards for Cuban cuisine are pretty high. This place is beautifully decorated but the service wasn't good, the servers paid us no attention and we basically had to get up to order a second round of drinks. The food is very highly priced for what it is (beef, chicken, plantains, rice...). A side of black beans is like 3 euros and not included in many of the dishes. This place has surprisingly good Cuban food (I'm from Miami, so I know my Cuban!) and the prices were very reasonable. If you're looking for something more substantial than tapas, this is the place. What can I say, I went yesterday to try some Cuban food. We went inside and the server drop the menu and left without saying anything. After 5 minutes a group of customers came in and thet sat down. The same waitress started to take their orders and then another waitress came by and she started to place our silverware. We asked her why this group came after us and were taking their order before us. She just got mad and told us they were sitting down before us, but we saw them coming after us. Anyway she was just mad and in a rude manner started taking our orders. At this time I lost my appetite and only ask for a coffe. After like 5 to 7 minutes she did not bring anything, so We got up and left. I cannot say anything about the food but the waitress are rude.
