I would give it 3 stars but my son said his tacos were probably the best tacos he's ever had (and he's eaten plenty of tacos at plenty of taquerias). 2.5 stars for service: nice enough but my daughter's meal showed up a full 15 minutes after the other 3 meals (after telling 2 people that we were still missing her food). 3.5 stars for food: the tacos and plantains get a 5. My mole burrito was a 2.5. Not bad-tasting but just overloaded with rice and not enough grilled vegetables (my selected filling) or guacamole (didn't see/taste any at all). I didn't even want the second half that I brought home for lunch the next day, and I LOVE leftovers. Chips & guac were good but portion was small. My husband said his burrito was fine and my daughter said everything on her fish taco plate needed more flavor. 5 stars for the outdoor patio dining that has a casual summer vibe. For a weeknight evening it was really busy which is a good sign I think! :) First visit: I got the chicken burrito to go since thats my usual way to try a new place! Once you order they give you a number and you just wait until its called out. Tip- You can also call ahead to order to save time! The burrito was not for me, I felt the proportions were off- too much rice and too little chicken. I was not happy at all. 3/10. It was well priced ($9 approx) and huge in size but it felt like it was a rice burrito only.. found some chicken towards the end but by then I was full with rice and did not enjoy it. My husband got the chili verde plate and could not stop praising it so I decided I need to go back and try the plate... He said it was the best plate he had so I went back ... Latest visit: I got the Chicken Fajitas plate and omg it was the best decision ever! So glad I came back to try this place again after the first visit. Note- The plate is not cheap ($16approx) but is huge so you will have leftovers , unless you are starving and eat it all :) both are great because the plate was delicious! The chicken was perfectly grilled served with grilled bell peppers and onions 10/10. This came with 3 corn tortillas, tomato rice, tomato salsa and black beans +guacamole and sour cream. The flavours were great and on the mild side- you could taste each individual component of the plate .. also hot sauce/salsa is always an option! I ordered a Carnitas Burrito to go and it tasted great, was a good portion size and had the medium spicy level that I asked for. When I ordered the cashier was friendly and they made my burrito quickly. Other things, the space is clean, bright and well decorated but pretty small. At least the in door dining area is small with only a couple tables near the entrance, right across from the cashier's area. Their larger seating area is mainly outdoors in a patio type area, which is fine when the weather is great, but won't be a comfortable experience when the weather is less than sunny or during most evenings (as California can switch quickly from a warm day to freezing evenings lol). Which is kinda a downer considering how late this spot stays open. This was once my favorite Mexican restaurant. The quality of food is deteriorating in the last one year. The food quality was average in late 2024 and below average earlier this year. I decided to give it another try a couple of weeks ago. The server brought me a pork burrito instead of the vegetarian order. Despite me checking twice with her that it is vegetarian (I am strict vegetarian), she still made that mistake. Due to company, I did not leave the restaurant at that time. The veggie burrito she brought later afterwards was dry and barely edible. It primarily had rice and lettuce wrapped in a dry tortilla and had very little beans (very dry) and salsa to give any flavor. My friend who specially came with me at my recommendation also agreed that it was not a place where we should come again. Good food, garbage service. Ordered $175 worth of food to go. Part of that order included 2 orders of chips and guac which they forgot. As well as tortillas for our two plates of fajitas. I understand that people make mistakes but when they forgot parts of the order they acted like it was my fault. I called and they put me on hold snd hung up on me twice. Instead of trying to fix it they blamed me. Long ago about thirty years ago, La Mission was once a Taco Bell that my father and I frequent on the weekends. Now this historic gem is an authentic spot for delicious Mexican food. I am particularly picky when it comes to Mexican because most establishments make the rice and beans using meat broth stock. Here both rice and beans are purely vegan; a rarity to find. I ordered the chicken flautas with mole. I asked for the mole on the side so it wasn't too much and that it didn't get soggy on the way home. Great decision. The flautas were large and crunchy and delicious with the mole. The chicken tortilla soup, minus the burn, was absolutely delicious. On a recent and cold Sunday evening, I just happened to notice on DoorDash that they offer menudo which sounded just right for us that evening. So yes indeed, we ordered the $17 Menudo. In terms of seating, they have a nice outdoor area I ordered the mole poblano burrito with carnitas (black beans & mild salsa) and it was delicious. It's a different kind of burrito than I usually order and I really like the flavor of the mole. The burrito has pickled vegetables in it which added a little kick to each bite. My dad also got the mole poblano burrito and my mom got the pipian mole chicken burrito. My mom enjoyed her burrito. La Mission is a great Mexican restaurant in downtown Berkeley. I've been here twice and had a good experience both times. The first time I went I ordered the chile relleno, which was quite good. The second time, I ordered the vegetariano burrito. Of the two, I liked the vegetariano burrito more. The salsas on the tables definitely add to the flavor! The restaurant itself has the cutest outdoor seating! I love the lighting, and it's easy to sit with a large group or even just one other person. The inside of the restaurant is quite small--just a counter for ordering and a few benches to sit on as you wait for takeout--so prepare to sit outside! This isn't the kind of restaurant where a waiter constantly comes to your table and asks if you're doing okay, so expect to be pretty self sufficient. Not only were the beans and rice desiccated, but I paid extra for cheese in a beans, rice and cheese burrito and I don't think they put very much cheese in there. This little place is a former Taco Bell. They have excellent food (the enchiladas are amazing) and the prices are commensurate with other local places.
