We stopped by La Mie as a breakfast stop and I'm soo glad we did. Right as you walk in, there's a beautiful display of pastries. There's croissants, tarts, danishes, scones, and more! While they do have hot and cold dishes that can be made to order, we chose to stick with the pastries. We ordered 5 pastries and 2 coffees and the total came to $20, which I think is super affordable! We were originally going to wait to eat the pastries in the car but the pastries were begging to be eaten there. Oh my goodness... the crunch of the croissant, the chewiness of the inside and the surprise ham in the middle. Honestly, I don't think I've had a more perfect croissant. We were going to stop there but then the tart... Crispy on the outside, filled with a light custard, topped with perfectly ripe strawberries. I felt like I went to heaven. Overall: I am excited to eat the rest of my pastries but I will most DEFINTELY DEFINITELY be back to Iowa for La Mie Bakery. read more

I saved my hundredth review for a place that really shines. La Mie is quick and delicious and the staff is friendly, there are basically no downsides here. Their huge lunch sandwiches are $5 and they have a huge array of desserts and pastries for any meal of the day. This is not the place I'd expect to be able to get a $10 lunch, especially of this caliber, but this is the place giving it to me. Their chicken salad is my favorite, but you'd be at a loss if you skipped over the pastries with a little coffee. They have a small seating area out back and a parking lot to boot. La Mie knows Danish...and croissants for that matter. Stopped in around 11:00 a.m.last Thursday and they were pretty busy. I commend them for getting us through the line so quickly. We obviously didn't know how the system ran but as you walk in there is a huge table full of pastries. They all looked soooooo good. I seriously had a thought that somehow they were all gonna be gone by the time we got thru the line (mind you there were only 6 people in front of us and as I said before, we got thru pretty quickly). But to have those delicious pastries starting at us, MOCKING US, was nearly torture. We found out you could order off the menu or you can pick what you wish off the table and they will ring you up for what you get. We really wanted the ham and cheese croissants but we're told they sell out very early in the morning. Disappointed but I get it. The pastry spread sitting in the middle of the room is gorgeous enough to make even the most strong-willed person cave in and help themselves to one of each delicious, delicate pastry in sight. Show up during off-peak hours or be prepared to wait in line and fight for a table after you've ordered. Their menu also include sandwiches, salads, omelets and more. Service at La Mie was pleasant particularly because I chose to visit during their busier times. Bought pecan Scones two weeks ago. They were delicious. Bought and brought home 2 today and they were like hockey pucks. Old. They swore that they didn't save these from over the weekend and put them out, but something sure happened. We ate one and are using the second one for a door jam. Also last year they shrank the size of their salads- to- go to about half the size and increased the price...this happened before the inflation of prices we are seeing lately. Would rather have just paid more. Double whammies never endear customers to businesses. read more

In town from Houston and found this little gem.I purchased tarts,croissants and coffee,everything was fresh and delicious!

They've maintained their quality even during the covid-19 situation. Staff are wearing masks and have plexiglass Shields to keep you safe as well. Their pastries are all behind glass enclosures you point to the one that you want and they put them in boxes for you. It's a very safe environment. They have an outdoor eating area but I'm still not ready to sit down and eat at restaurants. Having said that they have some wonderful breakfast items to go including make your own quiche and of course all their omelettes, as well as wonderful bread and of course all their French style pastries. There's just so many different kinds to enjoy. I would always recommend those items. read more

In normal urban bakeries, you come in, order and sit down where seating is available; first come, first serve. If you show up and there is no table, you get food to go or you go somewhere else. Well, not at this place. The owner profoundly misunderstands that it is not their average food that people come for, it is the atmosphere and people watching. Des Moines is small and this place is the only game in town to go sit, have a sandwich, coffee or pastry and people watch. The owner does understand this "only game in town" part and implements unheard of practices in order to maximize profits. You can't sit down until you have gone through the line and purchased your order. Once you do, there are signs in booths that say "please only stay 45 minutes". Staff with faces full of contempt circle the bakery like vultures in order to grab your empty plate or cup the moment you set it down so you can clear out and others can sit. If you sit in a booth without being assigned that seat, the owner will very rudely make you get up and seat someone else there. Go read dozens of other 1-star reviews on here if you don't believe it. This practice of seating people is falsely presented as wanting everyone to have a chance to sit and eat, but in reality it is to maximize profits, because the food is nothing special. If you sit as long as you want they don't make the same money. We will keep coming until there is a better option, but never again when some competition opens, unless they change this amateur practice. read more

Full disclosure, I haven't actually been in La Mie. However, my daughter enjoyed a turkey, bacon, cheese, lettuce, & mayo sandwich about the size of her 9yo head and RAVED about it with huge eyes. This place is like Willy Wonka for adults, only with bread and pastries instead of candy. You walk in and there is a buffet of amazing rolls, croissants, and pastries. You help yourself and then order entrees at the counter. They have amazing breakfast scrambles and sandwiches. Fresh soups and salads. They also sell cakes and macaroons. I love the vanilla and raspberry macaroons. They get very busy and there is parking in the back. read more

Food is not the issue, in fact, it's pretty darn good. The biggest problem with this place is their customer service. More appropriately, lack of customer service. The place is chaotic, no organization or flow to the ordering and checkout process, plus you can tell that the ownership has no hospitality culture, at all! What a shame. In fact, never seen a restaurant with such a negative atmosphere. They have signs posted everywhere with all kinds of "rules". Such as: "You can only sit here for so many minutes". Or, "Do not stand or wait in this area". Manager came over and cleared our table right in front of us while we were still enjoying our beverages. Didn't greet us at all, or even ask how our food was. The croissants are to die for! They are so crispy, fluffy, buttery. I had the egg, avo, and provolone croissant sandwich and it was fantastic. Fluffy eggs, buttery croissant perfection. I tried the detox latte with oat milk and it was interesting. Warm spices and creamy oat milk was a great combination. I would order this again. It was hella busy when we went in but we were well attended to and our food and beverages came out in a timely manner. I really liked the atmosphere, sort of minimalist cafe. They have pastries sitting out on a table and you grab your own little bag and pick them out. They had a list of what the pastries were and how much, but that's not super helpful for someone who is not experienced with pastries. First visit may be a little overwhelming for you if you are bringing your kids. (They didn't know what to do with themselves, so exciting!) Food was good. Pastries were good. We got some pastries on Tuesday (it's Friday) around 10:00 am. They were good, but I was expecting them to be incredible. We were a bit disappointed. We got 5-6 pastries and still have 3 that nobody ate (3 days later). That's a big deal with 5 kids in the house. We also got a slice of the breakfast pizza and again we're underwhelmed. I've had one too many chocolate croissants at the Farmer's Market but haven't had the chance to get into La Mie for lunch. Today was finally the day! This location had plenty of parking in front and the back entrance. I went right at noon and although it was busy, there were plenty of places to sit. There was no line either- who doesn't love that?! The pre-made salads looked delicious and so did the baked goods sitting out. I grabbed an egg salad sandwich on a croissant to-go with a Diet Coke. Now, my expectations were high, but this sandwich (totally) surpassed my expectations. The croissant was incredibly flakey, buttery, the perfect amount of thickness and golden brown. I love egg salad, but can be very picky about it. The egg salad was so delicious, and the lettuce tasted fresh! Saw the cookies as I was walking out.... so next time I'm coming for some baked goods! read more

A misunderstanding leads to a rude and uncalled encounter with the owner, Joe Logsdon. A friend and I ate brunch at La Mie today and were told a table number which indicated where to sit; we unintentionally sat at the wrong table. We sat down at table 12 instead of table 21. Table 21 seated 2 and table 12 seated 4. When a restaurant is busy and chaotic a lot can go unseen. As a customer we should have remembered this number, but the point of the review is to explain the way the owner handled the misunderstanding. My friend and I were sitting at the table when the owner approached us and said, "No, no. I told you to sit over here. You can't just take other people's tables. That's why I gave you a number." His tone was stern and he wasn't listening to us as we said, "okay, that's fine we can move. We weren't sure-" (all while we are gathering our silverware and moving). I said, "It's really not a big deal." And Joe looked at me and said, "Just do what I tell you to do." Never would I have to expected someone would say such a thing to a customer. The assumption was made that our intention was to take a bigger table when in reality it was a misunderstanding in the first place, but it was clear that it did not matter to the owner what our intentions were. He was pissed at my friend and I and didn't care that he made a scene. I have enjoyed meals at La Mie for the past 5 years of living in Des Moines, but this experience will stop me from returning to La Mie. Disrespectful service completely detracts from delicious food. I went a few weeks ago during this lovely Covid-19 pandemic of times. Food is still absolutely wonderful and delicious. I got macarons, some pastries (some sweet, some savory), and a coffee. We had never had a a savory pastry from here and was pleasantly surprised! Every item was wonderful and delicious. We saved the macarons for later and enjoyed each delicious morsel with it's fantastic crunch and filling. For social distancing, you have to use the back door entrance... Neither really reminded me of their namesake, because they were so much better. From the clearly homemade berry sauce that was sweet and delicious without being syrupy to the marscapone cheesecake that was somehow incredibly rich while also being light instead of heavy like "normal" Cheesecake. One of my favorite breakfast spots to visit in the city when I am back home! So bright and cheery. They always have an amazing selection of pastries to choose from (it's hard to choose but I am a huge fan of the gruyere and ham croissant)...or the sticky roll, or the tarts...the list keeps going. The best part is all of the pastries are located on a large island so you can hand pick which ones you want and pay for them at the counter. You also order everything at the counter and then they will bring it to you. In addition to pastries, they have a great selection of egg based dishes for any type of pallet - veggie scrambles, meat omelettes, sandwiches, etc. A favorite is the smoked salmon toast and veggie scramble. Portions are fairly generous so if you are getting pastries I would consider sharing the other dishes. In need of some great coffee? They have that covered too! They have cute back patio seating when it's nice out as well which is always a bonus. I never make it in for lunch, but I hope to soon. read more

I've given it several shots, but I just cannot get on the La Mie train. Chocolate croissants: I love them! But they are ALWAYS out. I've managed to buy them once. If they're in such high demand, make extra of those and less of something that doesn't sell. Staff: No one is ever very friendly. They are just lukewarm. Food: I tried the grilled Brie and was severely disappointed. They just used thin, plain white bread. Aren't they a bakery? Give me something amazing with flavor! The food also came so fast that I have a sneaking suspicion everything is pre-made and tossed on a grill to warm up. I'd rather wait longer for something a little more fresh and hot! On others' plates in my party, the potatoes were mushy from sitting out too long instead of crispy. Ick. The eggs were okay. Upon walking in, you're greeted with an open display of amazing pastries in the center, colorful macarons to the right, and quick lunch staples like prepared bowls, salads and sandwiches by the counter. I tried their sandwich and soup combo along with a latte, and grabbed a box of 4 macarons to go and everything was well made with quality ingredients. Fresh bread greatly elevated the otherwise plain ingredients in a classic roasted turkey avocado sandwich. Soup of the day was creamy cauliflower, which I've never had, but surprisingly tasty! Judging by how soft the macarons were, they must have been made the same day. I could barely get a seat at noon, and it was really too loud to have a conversation, but it emptied out around 30 past.
