The one thing that has made this miserable winter a teeny tiny bit more tolerable is coffee and pastries from La Mie. I love all their croissants- apricot, cream cheese, blueberry, spinach and cheese, chocolate, almond.... really I love them ALL! The biscotti is worth mentioning. Excellent with a cup of tea in the afternoon. Unfortunately I was not impressed with the macarons. Too crispy and crumbly and I've had better ones. The coconut macaroon on the other hand is to die for. I have had brunch a couple of times here. The first time I ordered the Avocado Tartine. It's a fancy name for avocado toast. Very good but I could use some salt/pepper on it for flavor. Their sweet food is a tad better than savory in my opinion. I feel the savory dishes are a bit under seasoned. After an internal debate I felt this did not warrant taking away a star. Love their coffee and hot cocoa as well. Really the only thing that they can work on is that seasoning on the savory breakfast dishes. read more

Amazing pastries and breakfast. We genuinely love this place. Just looking at all the artful pastries and beautiful bread is fun! My only complaint is that it's so popular it's hard to get a table. Every time I've been it's always super busy and we just have to stand around awkwardly and wait. Which is a good sign, but sometimes you just want a table! read more

I was looking for a go-to place for French macarons before discovering this French bakery on Yelp. My friends and I stopped by one Sunday afternoon and we were instantaneously impressed by the open displays of fresh breads and pastries adorned by the entrance with small pathways that led to the large counter where the register was located. There, we were sensitized further with colorful sandwiches, cakes, tarts, cookies and sweets piled high and wide. The imposing breakfast menu was handwritten on a blackboard overlooking all the good-looking pastries. On the backend there was also a sizable seating section including a sunny patio for those dining in. They only carry two macarons on the day so I got to try their Rose and Pistachio Macarons ($1.25). Each had a crispy exterior but the secondary texture was a bit stiff before the ganache was reached. The Rose had a pleasantly aroma but not as finesse and robust as 'Lette, and the Pistachio was too sweet that overshadowed a pistachio flavor that stuck to the backdrop. I also had the chance to try their Chocolate Brioche and Chocolate Croissant. The rectangular Brioche was soft and easy to bite into with a buttery, sweet, and creamy center filled with chocolate chips on every bite. I absolutely loved it. The Croissant on the other hand was crispy and buttery on the exterior, but the center was dry with only a tiny smear of chocolate at the core. It was disappointing especially after having been impressed by the brilliant Brioche. Overall, I just didn't get blown away by their goodies after the in-store visit. They also sell their breads and pastries at the downtown Farmers Market for those interested. Service was friendly, hip and upbeat, but my experience was underscored by a lack of macaron options with clear hits and misses among the items that were brought home. Somewhat overhyped with lots of bells but no whistles to show clear substance and consistencies in their products. The hunt is on to find a better French bakery across Iowa. read more

Many people rave about this place, so when I went, I had some pretty high expectations. When you walk in the first thing you see is all of their baked goods laid out on a table, you either grab a bag or box and fill with the goods and then get in line and pay or order breakfast. When I went I was in company with a good friend and I ordered an omelette with bacon, ham, and spinach with a croissant. She ordered the bacon tuskegee tartine (open face sandwich) with fried egg, peanut butter, red onion and dijon. They give you a number and you find a seat until they bring your food out to you. They were pretty quick and when our food arrived I was very impressed with how...pretty it was? Lol I mean it looked so good, it looked unreal! Looks aren't everything but I am happy to report the taste lived up to how pretty the food was! The croissant was perfect! The omelette unbeatable, usually I dump lots of ketchup or salsa on my omelette but this was so good it was unneeded. I would recommend this place to coworkers, friends and my own mother alike! Just know beautiful food that tastes great isn't going to be cheap but it's worth it! read more

I was hoping to be overwhelmed by French pastries and bread. I was also hoping to be overwhelmed by the smells of baked goods! Instead, the smells were quite nasty. It definitely did not smell like pastries or bread here. I cant even pin point what the smell was but it was not pleasant. I was also met with confusion as none of their pastries or baked good had labels. I had no idea what was what or what ingredients each pastry was made with. There was someone willing to help me but he seemed unwilling to take my order by the pastries display case. He kept standing by the cash register which was on the opposite side of the display case. Without labels on the baked goods, I wasn't able to order by name but only by pointing. Definitely very unorganized. I ordered a bun with pecans on top and a chocolate brioche. When I asked the guy taking my order what was in the brioche, he seemed confused when reciting the ingredients to me. It had me worried....The pecan was good and the chocolate brioche was only okay. Not quite sure if we'll be back... read more

Had late lunch here today, and dang it was awesome! Got the Soup and Sandwich combo! Veggie sandwich with no cheese makes it vegan, and the Vegetable Noodle soup was vegan as well! When a Frenchie, go to La Mie. Swooped over for lunch one day with a bud. Price: Look to spend about $4/ pastry and $9/dish Parking: LOT (Back & front) Service: Pretty chill. Order & pay at the register before getting situated. I dig all the yummy looking pastries. Food: Smoked salmon sandwich. yum. This reminds me of being back home by the coast. The portions are sufficient for the price. The coffee wasn't very goood. Notes: No complaints. Overall: This is a chill spot to meet buds for brunch. read more

Great spot for breakfast, lunch, coffee or a boatload of delicious pastries. Plus the atmosphere is bright and inviting. They also have these two giant tables made from recycled marble slabs which are amazing and something I've dreamt about but didn't know existed in real life (coming from a guy with a bunch of old marble slabs in his possession, I'm inspired). I had the chicken pesto sandwich. It was good. Hard to beat anything served on fresh baked bread. I paired it with a side salad because I'm trying to be healthy and like five cups of coffee. Prices were reasonable. Great location right of the interstate. I'd def go back. read more

Would not recommend. Day old+ pastries that were incredibly dry. All the food was very bland and overpriced. Service was fine.

I salivated when I walked into this place. It was nice to get away from the cold, but it was even nicer to come into a room filled with freshly baked French pastries. It was like walking into the dessert section of the Ceasar's Palace buffet in Las Vegas! It looked like a very popular place because everyone & their mom was there. Luckily, the line didn't take very long to get through. I ordered the salmon omelette. My boyfriend ordered the asparagus omelette. Both were delicious! My omelette was made from egg whites. They were very tasty! They were sprinkled with parsley & it was buttery, but not overwhelmingly oily. The smoked salmon was the perfect combination with the egg. The toast on the side was a little burned, but avoiding those parts, I really enjoyed the the toast. My boyfriend & I both enjoyed our meals. It was definitely worth it to visit this place! I hope that I can go again when I'm in town!! read more

We became acquainted with La Mie at Bacon fest 2012 and haven't looked back, though now we have a much better appreciation after seeing more than 1 or 2 items on display at the farmers market. Our conversation went like this - Good Day La Mie! Do you know where I can get the best croissants I've ever tasted or an actual brioche with chocolate or a delightful scone? Here you say? Well then, I'll take them all! Seriously though, the croissants here are far and away the best ones I've ever had, and this boy loves his carbs! I also learned that brioche is not simply a bun served with the expensive sandwiches at Wendy's - though now appreciating what they are, I'm slightly more likely to try one. The chocolate brioche was also one of my favorite bread items ever - try both! Amazing stuff here, sure to impress even the most pretentious of French folk. Try this place out and you'll be hooked! read more

I love this place. Once in a while, the lettuce is nasty. Today was one of those days. Apple and avocado salad is so good, but the lettuce today was horrible. Mixed in with good lettuce was mushy/rotten parts. So disappointing. read more

Wow. I had heard that La Mie wad good, so a group of us girls decided to try it for lunch. I had the bacon spinach omelette with a salad. The omelette was perfectly cooked and delicious, I just wish the spinach was a little smaller because it was hard to cut. The salad was AMAZING. The dried cranberries were a perfect sweet companion to the salty cheese, and the dressing was just the right amount to enhance the flavors. The decor was super cute and classy. We were a little unsure of how to order the pastries, but the workers were very helpful. I look forward to going back! read more

La Mie - Bakeries Near Me - Des Moines, Iowa

All apologies, but I don't have a complete set of photographs for this review. However, I think that my two out of three should be enough for you to get an idea. This was the fourth and final place I ate while visiting a good friend in Des Moines, and definitely the best. I walked into La Mie to find myself in a very hip brunch place. The first thing you'll notice is a buffet cart with a fantastic spread of fresh pastries, each one looking more delicious than the last. Next to that is the counter with a refrigerated case of things like juices, yogurts, fruit, etc. Everything looks modern, and although it was busy, the lines moved quickly and there was more than enough seating. I ordered originally some sort of a raspberry custard pastry. I couldn't find a name for it anywhere, but I have a feeling that the pastries probably change on a daily basis. It was heavenly!! Since I had a three hour drive back to Kansas City ahead of me, I decided to order another dish to fill me up. I went with the chickpea scramble. A little note about myself: I can't eat straight-up eggs. I'm not allergic to them, I just feel nauseous after eating them to the point where I often need to excuse myself to the restroom. So when I saw the chickpea scramble on the menu, I thought, "Huzzah! A vegan scramble!" I even made sure at the counter that the scramble was really just chickpeas - no eggs, and I was told that, yes, it was. As I found out minutes later, this was a lie. If I ate eggs, I'm sure the meal would have been delicious. But I don't, so I went and explained my situation to the woman working at the counter, who let me reorder and keep my original meal, free of an additional charge. That was very nice and not to be overlooked. I gave the chickpea scramble to my friend, who said that it was different, but good. I ordered a fruit plate, which featured a whole banana, some slices of watermelon, and a cup filled with apple slices, blackberries, raspberries, and pineapple. It was all fresh, but not overly interesting. Out of all the places I visited in Des Moines, Le Mie is probably the only one I would want to go to again. It's fairly cheap, and you'll definitely find something tasty to eat there. read more

I wish I could have stopped and actually ate at the restaurant, but our whirlwind through Des Moines only left enough time to for a quick order-at-the-counter situation. We loaded up a box with pastries while waiting (though I wish they would have had names on them... we had a case of mistaken identity with raisins/chocolate) and took some quiche and coffee to go! Everything was delish. I'd definitely return again. read more

It's a shame on me!! I don't even know there is a French Bakery that located a mile away from me!!! Oh gosh.. I came here twice a week now... I love French Bakery.. Pastries.. Quiche.. Sandwich... I ordered a Salmon Tartine on my first visit.. Smoke salmon, avocado, creme fraiche, sweet onions, hard boiled eggs, and sprouts on a bread... I do not like sweet onions.. So I ate it without it... Smoke salmon.. with bread, and everything that blend together.. not too much of creme fraiche... Mmmmm... I love i!!!! Their service is so fast and I do not have to starve for more than 5 minutes... Pistachio macaroon as dessert... Crispy and a little soft with pistachio cream... Sweet but not too sweet is perfect!!!! Second visit... Ordered Tomato and Asparagus quiche.. blend with eggs and cheese... MMmmm... I enjoyed it with a cup of house blend coffee... gosh... It just made my day.. I prefer the salmon tartine instead of quiche... I took a piece of their complementary bread.. I don't really like it.. perhaps they just make it and leave it on the table for quite some time.. it's too cold to enjoy it... Their coffee is really good... I prefer this instead of starbucks.. :) Can't stop myself on looking at their desserts.. I want something that's not too big to enjoy.. I just ordered a box of mini macaroons.. Some for my friends.. I tried their rose macaroons... Mmmm... I love it.. or maybe I just love macaroons??? Bought Tapioca macaroons as well.. gonna keep it for my breakfast tomorrow!!! Their service is really good.. Friendly.. fast... and they will always seek an answer for a customer's question.. I will definitely return and try their pastries... Bread pudding... and some bread.. perhaps a sandwich on my next visit.. read more

You've probably heard that La Mie is a must try in Des Moines. Take the advice! I love this place. Walking inside is like transporting into Paris (minus the complicated French language). When I first came here I actually thought all the pastries in the front were for decoration...that's how aesthetically perfect they are. Plus, they taste as amazing as they look! Grab a French pastry from the massive selection on the tables or order from the simple but delicious menu of omelets, salads, and sandwiches. Although I suggest getting the full experience and sitting down choose from the prepackaged meal items next to the check out counter if you're in a rush! Insider tips: the location is not huge and weekends and lunch can be quite crowded (because it's super popular, duh!). I usually go right before the rush and served quickly. If it's nice outside I always try and snag a table on the patio in the back. Located at the Shops at Roosevelt, parking can seem deceiving. But wait: there is a free parking lot in the back! Really want to indulge? Grab the P.B.B.B. french toast. Peanut butter, bacon, and banana french toast. I dare you to finish the whole thing. read more

Always a favorite when heading back to Des Moines. This place is always busy so expect a bustling atmosphere. Pastries are displayed beautifully in the morning where you can pick and choose from a simple croissant to scones, and many more. This weekend I met a friend for breakfast and decided to try their peanut butter, bacon and banana French toast. Great flavor!! The actual bread was a tad dry for me however to each their own. I brought a croissant home as well, it didn't disappoint! read more

I'll keep this short and sweet (pun intended) We were out visiting my daughter and four grand daughters who live in Des Moines, in June (2015). We wanted to get a good breakfast before we started on the long drive back to NJ. My daughter recommended La Mie and what a gold mine! I wanted to take this place back to NJ. EVERYTHING was SOOOO good ! Close your eyes and grab something and eat. (after you pay for it of course) I promise it will be delicious! Although it is primarily a bakery, you can get a full breakfast too. Everything, just everything was fantastic. Great coffee and the prices are good too. This is a "must see" if you're in the area. read more

I would not hold back in saying that this is the best bakery in all of DSM. I have come here multiple times for breakfast, lunch, and even dinner. As for the menu breakdown... - Quiche-asparagus and tomato is my favorite. some of my friends come here specifically for quiche, so it is just that good. - Salmon tartine- slice of french bread with goat cheese and salmon slices, topped off with alfalfa sprouts. I loved the combination so much that I now make it at home. - Albacore tuna salad- sprouts, tomato, avocado, red onion, egg. I thought it was tasty and filling. It is probably not a reason to specifically come to a French pastry shop though. I have tried almost all of their sandwiches. -Brie- Simple yet divine. The mix of melted provolone and grilled brie with pesto/tomato hits the spot. I am usually one for exotic choices. But I dare say that this has become my favorite sandwich. -Chicken salad- served with tarragon, walnuts, celery, and cranberries. The bread for this sandwich is not as delicious as the others, plain rye I believe. Not my favorite, but still delicious. -Albacore Tuna- This is my number two sandwich with carrot, currant, avocado, and almonds. The sandwich is FILLING. -I can never avoid the french macarons, favorites being raspberry and pistachio. I didn't like the s'mores tart, as it was too sweet and dry for my liking. I prefer the homemade cheese cake topped with fruit over fruit tarts. ALMOND BAR is the best from the pastry cart. White chocolate raspberry mousse and Bavarian chocolate mousse is fairly good. The eclairs are also worth a taste. I haven't tried their cappuccino, since their coffee is sub-par. They used to have Friday evening dinners on the patio, but I thimk it is no longer an option. I got the salmon and quinoa meal, which was A-okay. read more

I took a dozen pastries to go. No two were the same. This was only a mistake because now I love them all. I honestly could not make a recommendation. I just wanted more. It was very busy on Saturday morning. The line went quickly and the cashier was personable. I don't think I have any suggested improvements other than some clarity of pricing. La Mie is a great little bakery in our neighborhood and for good reasons - they're "hip" (as my husband likes to say), they have amazing pastries and coffee, and they're breakfast and lunch menu is also great. I'll probably be back again and again, but there's one reason I don't give them 5 stars and it's because of the attitude or tone they give off when I bring my child in her stroller (sorry we live in the neighborhood and I walk to your bakery). There's just an overall "nose in the air" feeling when I bring her in and I feel as if I'm in everyone's way. (Yes, I make sure to say excuse me, sorry,....) There's another coffee shop and bakery in East Village that is also "hip" and has great pastries, coffee, etc. so I will just get in my car to drive over there where they are happy to see me and my stroller... read more

La Mie - Quiche Lorraine, Croissant, French Macarons - Bakeries Near Me - Des Moines, Iowa

My husband and I met a couple of good friends at La Mie, which seemed like an ideal meeting spot. The ambience is wonderful. As you enter the establishment you are greeted with a table full of stacked, assorted breads. I've never seen a display like it. The rest of the restaurant is a mix of European influence and modern decor. I really loved the feel of sitting in La Mie. However, the food is nothing to write home about. I ate a Chicken Salad Sandwich, which for $5 was a reasonable buy. It was quite delicious. The potato soup, however, was a bit bland. In case you're a chunky potato soup lover, note that the potato soup here is pureed. Our friends were somewhat underwhelmed with their food choices. I tried my friend's quiche and it was very disappointing - instead of nice smooth, fluffy quiche it was very eggy and had the texture of JELLO. Too, it was bland. I tried a macaron for dessert. These little treats are beautiful, and fantastic for weddings, but I did not care for the boring sugary taste. For $1.25 it was a waste to me. However, this doesn't effect my score... perhaps I just don't like macarons. The blueberry danish was good, but far from exceptional. I tried it and somewhat enjoyed La Mie. But when I'm passing through Des Moines again I will try something else. read more

Amazing pastries like croissants, tarts, macaroons, sticky pecan rolls and lovely assortment of fresh bread. I have not found another bakery I like better. Tartine in SF, Dominique Ansel in NYC, Bouchon...la mie has ya beat! They also have the best french toast anywhere. Best of Des Moines...I am voting right now! Well, uh when I can. Whether I am picking up their pastries on Saturday at the downtown farmers market, grabbing a sandwich to go, or coming in for a little brunch...this place belongs and is one of my favorite in the state of Iowa! One day soon I hope they flourish on the west side and maybe the north and OK the east as well...and could you open up one in Waterloo my hometown so when I am visiting I do not miss a craving? But even better they could open a location in downtown DSM. Yes, their that good! read more

This review is based solely on the pastries; I have yet to try other items on the menu. Croissants: I have tried the chocolate, almond, and ham & cheese flavors, and they are all delicious! These croissants are large, flakey, perfectly buttery, and light. In my opinion, the ham & cheese tastes better when you warm it up in the microwave. Pecan roll: I tried a fresh one that was still warm, and like the croissant, it is light and fluffy. The generous amount of pecans added a nice crunch, and the glaze did not make the roll overly sweet. It is also quite a large roll--bigger than a baseball. It was also surprisingly filling. Macaroons: The raspberry macaroon was the perfect balance of sweet, tart, and crunchy. The jam-like filling was absolutely delicious. The coffee macaroon was not as good. The filling seems to be more liquidy, and it just paled in comparison to the raspberry macaroon. The lines can be long at times, but it moved quite quickly. Other than that, I have 2 complaints about this place: 1.) No labels on the pastries. This is annoying for me, as I would like to know what is in each pastry before deciding to purchase it. I would ask an employee, but they are usually all busy the few times I have visited. 2.) No prices on the pastries. This is also annoying, since I like to calculate roughly how much I would expect to pay at the register before paying. Maybe this is because the pastries table constantly rotates with different pastries, so there isn't a designated place for each pastry type. However, a large photo menu with a photo, price, and description of each pastry could be located near the pastries table to clear up confusions. Also, my friend ordered a macchiato expecting it to be a coffee drink, and it was 80% foam, with a small amount of coffee at the bottom. When she asked, the employees said this is what it is supposed to be like. Just a warning, if you are expecting a coffee drink, don't order the macchiato here. Overall, I greatly enjoy the pastries here, and I will definitely be back. I just hope the pastries could be more clearly identified and priced. read more

Stick with the pastries and the coffee/espresso, which are all fantastic. I found the thin individual quiches quite disappointing, all crust and not enough creamy custardy action. I'll look forward to proper quiche pie when I return to SF. read more

I've been coming here for years and I've always enjoyed it. However, it has begun to lose something in its quality over the last six months. Honestly, I think it's because of St. Kilda and other places that have sprung up and "upped the ante." The layout for La Mie has always been sort of confusing (the water and silverware etc) but I didn't really mind. But other things I notice and do mind. My last visit was with a group of twelve and the table was never cleared. I didn't even notice until one of my visitors commented on how surprised she was that the table was full of dirty plates. Bottom line: DSM is changing and local businesses may not be aware that expectations are shifting. read more

I'm usually wary of breakfast at places like La Mie, however, boy was I wrong. It's a very modern self serve space. First you are greeted by pastries and bread, all of which looked amazing. Usually cafe style places have very limited choices and its usually minimal on the plate. Not here! Next, and most important, breakfast. They have a lot of good options and very decently priced at $9 for an omelet with a choose of side and toast. I got the sausage and mushroom omelet with their rosemary potatoes. One of the best breakfasts I've had in a long time. On the way out I noticed a variety of hearty sandwiches so we picked up a couple for $6 each. Can't wait! read more

I was on the last leg of a work trip with 4 other girls and we wanted brunch before our flight back home. So airy and open! Walking in we were excited about the large selection of both ftesh pastries and vegetables...Like I needed a salad! The flow: You pay at the counter and either order takeaway or pick a table... I really liked the self serve components. There's a water station with lemons and ice, hot tea and coffee. The food: I ordered the chicken pesto sandwich with the beet quinoa side salad. Although the menu doesn't really specify the ingredients for the salad, I was pleasantly surprised at the balsamic vinaigrette as well as the presentation of everything. The service: You can tell that everyone at this location was close-knit and had a passion for the business. Nothing, but smiles... Stopped with a friend on our way through town. The pastries here are truly incredible. We tried some kind of spinach and cheese pastry and a rhubarb tart and both were spectacular. Two things--if you go on Saturday morning be ready to wait. The place is always packed. Better yet, take your order to go. Also--if you do stay, DON'T SIT AT THE LITTLE ROUND SILVER TABLES. They are wobbly as Hell. We lost half a pastry and our tea spilled all over every time we tried to cut into what was left of our breakfasts. It was super frustrating, but the food is so good, I'll stop again. I will definitely order it to go, though. read more

I consider La Mie a classic lunch spot in central/west side Des Moines. I know a lot of people love it as a breakfast spot, but I am not a morning person. I can say the one time I had La Mie breakfast I went all out and ordered their French Toast which is served with peanut butter, bacon and bananas. So filling! I love the sweet and savory thing they do with it. My family has also been known to get a big box of baked goods from time to time and they are always on point. I am in *lurv* with their chocolat au pain. For a gal who doesn't regularly gravitate towards sweets, this is saying a lot! They have a nice selection of sandwiches, which I would consider to be elevated takes on cafe classics--like chicken salad, French ham, Albacore tuna, etc. The salads are all top notch as well. I often order the roasted beet & quinoa salad which has roquefort, walnut, sweet potato and a balsamic dressing. Finding a seat can be a challenge sometimes, but hey, it's because they're popular and good at what they do! read more
