The best breakfast place in the city. Pastries are perfect, omelette always a good choice. Have added super convenient meals for carry out like lasagna and skillet dishes. read more

This place is outstanding but I'm sure everyone already knows that. I'm new here, by way of CA, and OMG this place is the mothership. I cannot believe the spread. In addition to scooping up a couple pastries and chocolates to take home with me I also had brunch there. The quiche and salad were so delightful. I suspect I'll be here often and increasing my workouts. My favorite place in Des Moines read more

I absolutely love this place. Nobody cooks egg dishes better than La Mie. Their vegetable scramble is amazing...eggs are nicely done, vegetables are never overcooked and they put avocado on top to make it even better! They also have the best pastries in town. My only complain is that they don't open on Sundays!( yes, I am a selfish customer) It is probably good that they don't open on Sundays otherwise I would be the creepy customer who would be there 7 days a week read more

La Mie deserves five stars no doubt! I used to go there a lot when I lived in the Des Moines area. I am in town for business and stopped in my favorite breakfast/lunch place...just as good as it was when I lived here! I had the applewood bacon omelet, side of potatoes, and orange juice...kept it "healthy" by avoiding the hundreds of delicious looking pastries staring me down as I waited in line. The fresh squeezed OJ was great, as was the omelet. It is clear they use fresh ingredients and care goes into each dish. It is a little pricy for what you're getting, but well worth it! Whenever I'm in town, I'll be stopping here! read more

La Mie - Delicious omelet! - Bakeries Near Me - Des Moines, Iowa

Food and service are very good. Of course the Paistries and bread are very good. Some of my favorites are; the Asparagus and Brie omelet, the Salmon omelet, the Quiche Lorraine, and the French Toast with Berries and Bananas. I love eating on the back deck when the weather permits. read more

What can I say, that already hasn't been said!!! A great place to eat or just stop by for some goodies to go!! Seating can be a little difficult sometimes, but that is because it is such a popular place!!!! There is something there for everyone, you can get something sweet or enjoy a healthier breakfast like an omelette with avocado. read more

La Mie - The best pastries around!! Fresh and best thing to look forward to early in the morning!!! Goes great with their coffee too! - Bakeries Near Me - Des Moines, Iowa

This is been a favorite of mine for lunch for a long time. They have wonderful baked goods and my favorite sandwich is grilled Brie. I came in on a Friday about 10 minutes after 1 after their Rush Hour and ordered a grilled Brie. They brought it to me it was not even warm and the cheese was rubbery. Obviously it was made some time ago. Someone delivered it to me and didn't even notice the sandwich was not fresh. I had to flag down somebody and I politely pointed it out and she said will re Grill it for you and I explained wanted a new one. It finally came and I know if the owner had been here you would have come and apologized but that didn't happen. It's just good business when a restaurant makes a mistake and they don't take any responsibility for it and they don't care about the customer experience. read more

Are favorite stop when visiting Des Moines. Best pastries and lunch in town. Fresh bake goodies daily.

Great bakery and amazing prices. This place cannot be beat. amazing selections and amazing prices

Delicious! You don't feel like you are in Des Moines when you are there. The atmosphere is great.

Wonderful selection of pastries, good flavor, nice variety. Good lunch options to go also

I tried to order a sandwich but was told that the bread wasn't available...what?? Ended up ordering a veggie scramble which was okay, but I didn't care for the veggies too much...a lot of the veggies including the sweet potatoes were tasteless. Also the cinnamon roll wasn't sweet. It was pretty much a shiny piece of bread. read more

Delicious food and beautiful location/inside! I had bacon and eggs and toast and it was simple but delicious; cooked and seasoned well. The table full of pastries made my mouth water so beware if you have a sweet tooth, you'll probably get sucked in to buying a pastry... or five. The space has a pretty good amount of seating for being fairly small and service was friendly and expedient. Can take a while to order if you go during a major breakfast or lunch rush but that just goes to show how popular the joint is! Definitely worth checking out for brunch and bring some extra pastries home after. read more

I rarely have to downgrade a review, but after the past year's observation, La Mie is losing ground. The food remains good*, but the customer experience has evaporated significantly, and not like a sweetened condensed milk. Orders lost, orders brought to table long delayed and cold, meals brought to table 15-17 minutes apart from each other, table management issues, etc. Not to mention the more difficult to handle crowd control. None of this is insurmountable (aside from the crowd control). This is very much La Mie being a vicitim of its success. I hope that over the coming year they will be able to overcome some of the hurdles of that success. * The perfectly Parisian croissants have become too buttery. I didn't think such a think was possible. _______________ 02/04/2012 La Mie is coming close to mastering the art of crafting delightful breakfast/brunch/lunch experiences. The light and crusty things are always just so, the heavier and more robust things are savory and filling, and if you are looking for some morning bustle in a somewhat modernist setting this is a place for you. La Mie is located in the Roosevelt Shopping Center, a vintage strip mall with little parking in the front (one-way parking, south to north, no less), but a nice-sized lot in the back. Patio seating is available lending to the Parisian cafe vibe. While the buzz is usually about dining at La Mie, it IS a bakery, meaning that you should not forget to experience a little old world pleasure by picking up a fresh loaf of crusty bread (if you can stop yourself at just that) on your way home from work. read more

La Mie is so great! Good breakfast, great lunch, pastries and bread made daily! The atmosphere is great and relaxing. But because it's by Roosevelt a lot of the teens like to stop in during lunch time especially on Wednesdays. If you don't like it crowded do not come here during 11am-1pm during the week read more

La mie is french for "sensual orgasm" -- and after eating the pastries here, I couldn't agree more. La Mie is hands down my favorite bakery in Des Moines. As a native southern Californian, I come from a place where there are gourmet donut shops, $12 extravagant muffins and the newest dessert craze on every block. And yet...i wouldn't hesitate to put La mie's pastries on par with any of those back home. The chocolate crossaint, monkey bread, cheese danish - simply decadent. I've gone back time and time again to splurge on the little puffs of heaven here. Works as a great gift and present to others as well!! Couldn't recommend this place more!! Also I made up the whole sensual orgasm thing. I have no idea what la mie means...but I wouldn't be surprised if it is!!! read more

Spectacular. Get there early for brunch because it gets packed and they sell out. Local hot spot and beloved community staple.

I love this place. The almond croissants are excellent as was the cub sandwich I had when I visited a second to time. Loved it!

Consistently awesome. The food here is always very good and despite always being slammed the staff is friendly and efficient. One of my favorites is the dish with toast, avocado, sprouts and egg. For my personal business, I love coming here to grab a dozen or two of their pastries to drop of at other businesses or other networking events. It definitely is much more memorable than the typical donuts or bagels and coffee. read more

One word to describe La Mie is BLISS. I've never had anything here that wasn't top rate. Two of my favorite pastries here are the savory croissants, which are the perfect buttery pastry filled with a ham and cheese. The caramel pecan rolls are divine and stacked high with nuts. We often stop in just for a loaf of their amazing bread. You can also find them at the downtown Farmer's Market during warm weather. My wife is enamored with the chocolate croissants. We sometimes pick up a selection of macaroons or other dessert for a party. You can even grab a creamy crème brûlée. Whether you have time to dine in and eat from the menu or you're in a rush and need crazy delicious pastries to go, this is the place. I only wish they were open later. Be aware that during prime breakfast hours they do tend to fill up and getting a seat isn't easy. Fortunately you can get everything to go and the world is your table, while the bliss is on your plate. read more

La Mie is a wonderful place for those morning delicious pastries. They're ambiance is great too.

Is there a Iowa state law that all food has to be small??? Does La mean "small"??? Good small food to eat before a meal.

Excellent COVID precautions. Pastries and bread I picked up were delicious. My cold brew coffee was awful, so I would skip coffee here. Maybe the person serving me just didn't know what they were doing? But serving cold brew should be easy. It was so bitter, more so than a normal iced coffee should be, let alone cold brew. I don't know what they had done to it,... it was that bad. read more

Whenever I visit Des Moines, I look forward to eating at La Mie. I went today and was shocked. It's not the same restaurant. Every single request I made was ignored. Egg white omelette, light on spinach. There was more spinach than egg. The toast was not whole grain and it was cold, and barely toasted. I ordered berries. I got grapes and pineapple. I'm allergic to pineapple. I won't be going back. read more

La Mie - Mmmmm - Bakeries Near Me - Des Moines, Iowa

My first time here for breakfast and before I even got to ordering I got screamed at by a worker. (Brown hair, young and pony tail. Unfortunately they don't wear name tags.) My mother is disabled and can't stand for a long period. She sat down while I waited in line. The worker started to yell at me that she couldn't sit there that it was the rules of la Mei. Apparently she also came up to my mom and asked "Well what's wrong with you?" How is that even relevant let alone ok? She told me she could sit at the bar, she can't sit on bar seats they are too high and also they were blocked by the very long line. She told me that "I didn't need to get an attitude with her" when I'm informed her she was disabled. She was in the dine in cash register, so I asked the carry out person to check me out. I told them she was very rude and I didn't want to deal with her. She screamed at me, even though she had a customer, that "I was very rude to her so she was going to be very rude to me." She continued to make snide remarks while I was trying to order with the other cashier. She brought me to tears. She was more interested in trying to get into a fight with me then helping her customer. If the employees treat the disabled and customers this way the community needs to be warned. Also They have too narrow walk ways There's no way you could fit a wheelchair or a walker in the back. Other workers where also rude. Running into people and not apologizing or even looking up. They are more interested in running paying customers out immediately. The food was sub par and cold. The yolk in my sunny side up egg was broken and the toast was not toasted. The bacon was greasy and not crisp. The potatoes were ok tasty but not hot. This place does not want your business. Stay far away. read more

Proper COVID prevention and wonderful food. Ham and Swiss omelet was very good. Coffee was excellent.

A bit overrated. I know there's not much competition in Des Moines, but come on...definitely not a 5-star type of place. Went for lunch - it was a madhouse, with nowhere to sit, though a couple people were taking up entire tables with their laptops and had clearly been there for hours....but I digress. Cashier was not paying attention at all. Messed up our order twice and had to charge my card three times. Sandwiches were dry and devoid of any flavor or seasonings. They had clearly been made in the morning and sat out all day until lunchtime. Same goes for the pastries. Whoever thought it was a great idea to keep them out, uncovered, in the middle of the restaurant where hundreds of people are walking and standing around...well, that was a terrible idea. Pastries were passable. Fine by Des Moines standards, but way overpriced for the quality of them. Overall it was a very unimpressive trip. Will definitely not be back, as there are many better lunch options around town. read more

Updated: I went again for lunch today and again the wait staff was rude and not helpful. I ordered a Greek salad and the salad brought to me was clearly not that. The waitress didn't believe me at first and it finally took me 3 different employees for Trent I believe me and bring me what I ordered. Geesh. The salad also was not very good. read more

This review is mainly for La Mie's macaroons. I am a bit obsessed with macaroons right now so when I was in Des Moines I decided to run in and grab a box of La Mie's macaroons. "Unimpressed" is probably the best word to describe them. It's all about the flavor in the middle of the macaroon and I found a few of them had this weird thick cupcake-frosting-like filling. Nothing 'light and airy' about thick frosting. I got a sample box of all their most popular kinds and nothing really jumped out at me which was disappointing. I know French macaroons are really difficult to make but I would hope that a cafe boasting to be French would have better. I just couldn't stop wishing that I was biting into the macaroons from Patisserie 46 in Minneapolis. read more

This place can accommodate a variety of eaters. Pastries, egg dishes, sandwiches, salads, and more. Their pastries look and taste delicious. My wife thinks their bear claw is better than Dutch letters (which I think is the best pastry ever). Some pastries look like they sat out too long and will be dry. But most pastries go quickly anyway. Their egg dishes are delicious and have a plenty of food. Their sandwiches are cheap and tasty. My only complain about this place is it's too crowded on weekends. read more

Great bfast place! I could eat myself sick on the baked goods. Get an egg dish & pastry. I highly recommend the pecan roll! It's a bit cramped and busy on a SAT morning, but a lot of good energy there. Truly, one of DSM's gems!! read more

The foods and flavors here are so fresh. Of course the breads and desserts are fabulous also. Wonderful atmosphere!! My only complaint would be that it closes to early in day read more

Went here today for brunch. We got a grilled brie that was pretty delicious and 2 dry, unremarkable pastries from their display. They looked really lovely but probably would have been better fresh and warm. I loved all their salad, sandwich, and deli options. Their macaroons were good, great buttercream! Their iced matcha latte was nothing special. The interior was kind of dirty, many of the tables needed to be wiped and the seats were torn up in multiple booths. They had jazz music playing distractingly loud. Overall, it was a cute place but needs a few improvements to hit that 5 star rating. read more

I did love this place originally because of the variety of food/pastries (and their coffee is great) but their pastries are either over or under cooked. Also, they advertise that they have free Wifi, but they don't. I sometimes think these non corporate cafes/restaurants intentionally push us to corporate starbucks which is a shame. Why not just think of another system where you pay per hour for wifi?! Or some clever system so i can hang out and eat more/drink more in a cool spot with better food than i find at Starbucks?!? read more

Oh La Mie, I so much wanted to love you. From your concept, casual, outside seating, right down to your delicious name (which refers to the most tender part of the bread), but you rebuffed my every advance. Your cashier was inattentive, pastry selection limited, I even ordered your best seller, the grilled brie sandwich (it arrived as thick overly buttered toast with a thin smidgen of flavorless brie). No napkins, no cutlery served with the food, half the tables closed off. All on a vibrant Saturday afternoon. I got the impression that La Mie is coasting a little and have taken their eye off the basics. I'll be back to give them another chance, but for now prepared for a little disappointment. read more
