I stopped in while in town to pick up some treats for a meeting with a big client. There were rave reviews which was what directed me to La Mie. What caused me to not rave and not want to really direct additional people here is the large open display with trays of pastries and boxes to self-select and box. There were fruit flies all over a row of pastries. I pointed them out to one of the staff members and she just picked the ones with flies STUCK to them or crawling around on them and rearranged the tray - the SAME tray with other pastries on them. Instead of removing the entire tray she just picked those gross ones off! I ended up buying items that were pre-packaged and sealed. While the pastries LOOKED amazing - knowing they are placed in open-air and not in a display case where flies, or dirty hands, can reach them was not appetizing to me. La MEH. read more

Best macarons in Des Moines, hands down! Incredible freshness and flavor. And I am a macaron connoisseur. Not to be confused with macaroons. I will say though, that the owner, is less than friendly but I'm not surprised. And sad to say, for such a diverse area, the environment is mind numbingly pretentious. They've got a great assortment of grab and go sandwiches. And the chicken salad is served on a buttery flaky croissant and is TO DIE FOR! It is a little pricey as well but that is to be expected all things considered. read more

Everything I've tried from here has been nothing short of amazing. The pastries are to die for. Very happy to have this place so close by.

It aint no croissan'wich®! It is a croissant with ham, swiss baked into a wrapping of LOVE! Seriously people you can taste the LOVE!!! They have a great brunch type menu and their bread is great to take home and make a tasty sandwich out of. Remember to have them slice it they got an ol' school machine for it. I'll get you started cappacola from Graziano Bros, stone ground mustered from Gateway market, fresh goat cheese from downtown farmers market, and sprouts from dahls...enjoy! Go out the back door and discover quaintness of the backdoor patio. read more

A great unique atmosphere accompanied by exquisite pastries! A definite must try for everyone!

Dear budget, Can I eat at La Mie every single day? Pretty please? "No" you say...awe man...you're probably right...but gosh, I sure do want to. Yeah, my budget won't let me visit La Mie each day, but I wish it would. Once I find something I like, I usually don't try new things at a restaurant, so my excitement is purely based upon the coffee, veggie scramble, chicken salad sandwich, and the rhubarb pastry...all AMAZING. I'm certain everything here is. You order at the counter and then sit down with a number, and the staff brings your food. They also clean up your table. The service is quick, given how busy they usually are, and the restaurant and restrooms are clean. Just go. read more

I want to marry this bakery. Bliss does not even begin to describe my thoughts when biting into a fresh, buttery pastry from La Mie. This place is so good I pretty much plan my day off around a visit to this bakery. I'm crazy, I know. If I had to choose an absolute favorite breakfast pastry, it's hands down their pecan sticky bun. Layers of luscious, sweet dough with massive amounts of pecans and an almost caramel-y stickiness. It's ridiculously perfect. My other favorites would have to be their almond croissant and rhubarb puff pastry danish. Breakfast is pretty darn good, too. The quiche is delicious. If you're dining in, order at the counter and seat yourself. Pick up a glass of water, silverware and coffee on your way to the table, since it's self serve. Great location right off the interstate, not to mention only ONE exit away from me. read more

Some times you just stumble on places on your way to somewhere else. That how I finally discovered La Mie, and like my children, I wonder how I ever lived without it? Located in the Classic Roosevelt shopping plaza, next to The Cheese Shop, La Mie is style and taste in the literal sense of the word. Delicious pastries, sandwiches and coffee drinks that are freshly prepared with attention to detail. I had the #6 omelet - eggs with zucchini, asparagus and spinach, accompanied by a fresh brewed cup of coffee and side pecan roll. If that sounds filling - you are correct (I barely finished it). My kids had the French toast with fresh fruit. Everything was amazing! La Mie is not cheap; breakfast for my four member family pushed $50. They could really use fresh juices or offer Naked Juice - just a suggestion to the management (wink, wink). But otherwise, this place has quickly become my favorite morning stop and aspiration to work out regularly. read more

I feel like I didn't do justice the last time I wrote a review for La Mie, so it's getting an update. La Mie is hands down the best breakfast place in town. The food is fresh and very delicious. La Mie is only open from about 7 am - 2 pm, so if you don't go for breakfast or lunch, you cant go. For breakfast there are freshly made pastries (absolutely any kind you can think of), delicious quiche, omelets, fresh fruit, and really good coffee. Side note- do NOT expect to find things like donuts here- La Mie only serves GOOD food, and while I'd like to shove 10 donuts in my mouth as much as the next person, they aren't "good" food. Morning coffee+pastry costs me $5. Not bad. Much better choice than spending $5 on one giant sugary drink from Starbucks. Saturday morning you will stand in line, so be prepared. For lunch, you can grab a salad or sandwich, and you really can't go wrong with any of their choices. Instead of a greasy big mac, you will find yourself flavorful, fresh food from a real garden. Will you spend more? Of course, but my my is it worth it. Also- their bread is great. Pick up a loaf on your way out to have at home! If you're downtown, check out La Mie express on Locust right across from the sculpture park. Their selection isn't quite as large, but still the same great food. read more

*Vegans of Iowa* The list of vegan-friendly breakfast places with multiple or even passable options, is short in this town at the moment... It's only one... La Mie. Killer fresh ingredient food always. They have a couple different options for vegans. My favorite is the chickpea scramble with tofu instead of eggs. Just specify at the time you order, and it's no problem. Their side of fruit is always way better than any other spot too. My only issue here is that with the popularity(because of quality), they have run out of room. Especially for counter service. They need a bigger location, or need to start wait service with reservations and waiting list. But, if you go at the right time, it's usually not a problem. If you can get a table, it's worth the trouble, I promise. read more

Everything I've ever had from la mie has been phenomenal. My husband got me macaroons for my birthday: phenomenal. During baconfest 2016 they had a croissant with bacon and cheddar: phenomonal. During baconfest 2015 they had a bacon macaroon: phenomenal. Why would you go anywhere else for pastries? I feel like if you're in the neighborhood, and you find parking in the weird lot by the theatre, and you have money, you should probably stop here and feed your face with their delectable treats. It's pretty busy; that's because it's good. It's not just #trending, their products are worth it. And their customer service is great on top of everything. Go here. read more

Since going to La Mie that very first time...I went back again and again and again. Probably about once a week for the rest of the time I lived in Des Moines. Favorite list: Cinnamon Roll - it's glazed with an orangey-citrus glaze (read: very sticky, maybe not the best choice to feed your child in a car seat while driving) and topped with a dallop of cream cheese frosting. A lot of times I buy a few of these and keep them to eat the rest of the weekend. They keep well and taste awesome the next day. I like to buy them on Saturdays for Sunday since La Mie isn't open on Sundays! Chocolate Croissant - If you're on a first date - don't eat this. You WON'T look cute eating it. You will probably smear chocolate all over your face as you try to cram the entire pastry into your face at once. No? Was that just me? Did I sacrifice the interior of my car the time I decided I needed a bite of this on my way home from La Mie instead of waiting to eat it at home? Did I end up eating the ENTIRE thing and licking the dark chocolate off of my fingers? No. that never happend. That's awkward Scones - I'm not the biggest scone fan in the world, but my mom is. She swears by these things! Crumbly in the good kind of way and HUGE - these are bigger than your fist (even if you have big hands). Her favorite scone is the one with dried cranberries (?) and orange. Chickpea Scramble - I'm not a vegetarian but this thing is AWESOME. Packed full of chickpeas, eggs, zucchini, asparagus, onion, and topped with avocado. I always add a bit of salt once it comes out (it makes the flavor POP) and eat it with toast. KILLER. Bacon Omelet - YUM. they do not do halfway or skimpy portions on the bacon in this thing! Big ol' thick slices of peppered bacon with fresh spinach and cheese. Definitely another favorite. French Ham Sandwich - I can't remember if this is actually what it's called. But - it's ham on a baguette with brie cheese and dijon mustard. It's REALLY good. Super filling because they put a TON of cheese on it. I love getting this with soup for lunch - I usually end up with enough for two lunches :) So. What started as a small crush turned into a full-blown love affair. It's always busy on Saturday mornings - probably less busy if you shoot for a non "normal" time - aim for 9:20 instead of 9 or 9:40 instead of 9:30 -- the lines will be shorter. Lunch crowd is also pretty decent sized - but the line moves quickly. Go. Or don't. If you don't go, the line will be shorter for me when I'm back to visit!! read more

Really, really delicious baked goods and bread. I enjoyed the French ham sandwich for lunch, and kept thinking they'd spread delicious butter on the bread. Then I realized it wasn't butter...it was cheese. The loveliest damn brie I'd ever experienced in my life. The bread was the perfect amount of crust and softness, the ham that same delicious stuff you seem to only find in France. I also sampled a macaron, which, while not the best I've ever had, was a damn good effort. The staff was friendly and helpful. I can't wait to come back! read more

I love this place. The pastries, the coffee and the hot breakfasts are all phenomenal. Coffee is $1 if you bring your own mug. Those that are concerned about the ordering confusion and pick your own pastries need to chill out. It really isn't that confusing and I personally like being able to look at the options up close. My only complaints are that I have no idea how much anything costs until I purchase it and it can get pretty crowded around the pastry area. read more

Ouch! $23 dollars for a French toast plate, a plate with two eggs, bacon and spinach with one slice of toast and 2 orange juices. The French toast was Ok. The eggs were good as was the spinach. The bacon was anonymous in terms of flavor thickness and texture. It was undercooked. The bread was nothing to blog about. I know what you are thinking and I indeed should have stayed with pastry only. But any restaurant worth it's salt should be as good as Cracker Barrel with its thick sliced bacon and other great offerings. There bacon is like a mini pork chop. See you again never. By the way the coffee from previous family visits tastes like pencil shavings percolated with warm water. Go to the Waveland close by. The serving staff at least calls you "hon"! read more

When I returned to Des Moines after a 24 year absence La Mie was the first restaurant I visited. A friend had raved about the pastries and they didn't disappoint. I have had the salmon tartine twice and it was perfect. A great portion for breakfast. We also had great danishes: mine was cherry and cheese and my mother had a cherry danish. Both were perfectly flaky and not dry at all. There's sometimes a line and it seems chaotic, but we were able to find seats quickly after placing our order. It's a great place and I would highly recommend it. read more

I love this place. The pastries are amazing. I've never been disappointed. The food is really good and very original. You can get an amazing breakfast or lunch, though I've never been there for dinner. Good coffee. The ONLY down side is that it is so close to Roosevelt High School. One lunch, a herd of high schoolers came in and were seriously just touching all of the pastries, just picking them up and then putting them back down. I mean, I'm sure we all know that high school boys have the cleanest hands.... Cannot recommend enough. read more

I stayed at an air bnb nearby and came to La Mie twice on my trip to Des Moines. The first time I came we missed their morning pastry table. I was so bummed since that was what originally drew me to the place. My husband and I ordered a cappuccino, latte, and broccoli quiche to share. Our quiche was so bland. The crust was not hard at all. Now I knew that it would probably be microwaved but I wasn't expecting it to be so subpar. I was so disappointed. Our latte and cap however was really nice. The espresso had a great whole body flavor to it and wasn't very acidic. I really enjoyed that. The second time I came, I made it to the pastry display. YESSSSSSSSS. It was very European to have tongs and pastries out in the open like that. I grabbed a blueberry danish, Ham and Swiss Croissant, and some sort of Spinach Croissant. We took it back to the house and warmed up the spinach croissant and I loved it. The croissant was really buttery and the spinach was mixed with a soft cheese- ricotta maybe? Not sure. But that was probably my favorite thing. We gave the danish to our friend and he loved it! Said it wasn't too sweet. The ham and swiss croissant was not bad. I think the ham they used was a little too thick for this pastry. It was baked in the traditional croissant form so when you ate it- the whole piece of ham would pull out and now you just have an empty croissant roll. No matter- the flavor was also really good! Also, I ordered a salmon salad to go. I liked it but wasn't sure why it had hummus in it. That didn't really go well with the salmon. The dressing was also a ranch dressing. Didn't like that either. If you get that- see if they have a lemon wedge or something. Then you can squeeze it into the dressing. That would be wayyyy better. Overall, I did enjoy this place. Both times we were the service was quick and friendly. There's plenty of parking and seating. I'd stay away from the quiche though! read more

I stop in here at least twice per week. The beet and quinoa salad is divine and I love the breadsticks that accompany my meal. It's prepared ahead of time which keeps me moving, in and out. Best bakery I've been to in Des Moines. On my last visit I got breakfast and had the Salmon Tartine and an Americano. The salmon is the best thing I've ever had here. Makes me hungry thinking about it. My wife thought it was uncooked. No, it's smoked salmon, one of the tastiest foods on earth. It comes on toast with sprouts, half an avacado, a hard boiled egg, some slices of red onion, and a wedge of melon. Super delicious and probably my go-to breakfast anytime someone wants to treat me to breakfast at La Mie! read more

This is one of my favorite places for lunch in Des Moines. The staff are always friendly and the food is always amazing. They have a wide variety of breakfast and lunch options including a massive mouthwatering display of their homemade pastries. I love the chicken salad sandwich with a small house side salad. Today I also purchased an iced mocha.... delicious! When you come in there will most likely be a line but don't worry the food is definitely worth the wait! read more

Oh, La Mie. You simply have the absolute best bread ever known to mankind. You smell like what I envision Heaven smelling like. Your pastry case is a rainbow of delicacies so expertly crafted you almost don't want to eat them. Your sandwiches, salads, and to-go menu is about as fresh as food comes. And your staff is pretty friendly, too. The only problem is that too many people know all of this. A picture of the line here on a Saturday should be attached to the Webster Dictionary definition of "bittersweet." read more

Definitely one of the best bakeries/breakfast/coffee shops around town! I've been here with a friend a couple of times for breakfast and had an awesome experience each time. The atmosphere and food are the signature points about this place, both are pretty important for a successful eatery! For the two times we've been here I can list off what we had to eat. The first time I got the smoked salmon omelette which tasted amazing! If you enjoy smoked salmon you will enjoy this! My friend had the French toast with peanut butter and bananas both days, it was very good, the flavors mixed perfectly together! We each got a different coffee of some sort, I remember the coffee was a descent at best, not the reason I come to this establishment. The second visit I had a fromage omelette, very good as well, but a bit strong with the cheese used, I got used to it and ended up enjoying the dish. This visit we each also got a croissant from the bakery, it was unbelievable! It was flakly on the outside and soft on the inside, amazing buttery taste! The atmosphere is wonderful especially with the decor, excellent design. The staff members were very friendly! Don't forget this is also a bakery, at the front you can grab a box and just load up on baked goods beautifully displayed to take home. I will continue to come here for occasional breakfast cravings until the menu bores me, which I do not see happening anytime soon! read more

It's a cute place that has a variety of bakeries and sandwiches. Lemon bar- the crust is too soft and almost felt like there was no crust. it wasn't that good. cinnamon twist- this was delicious. you can smell this right when you walk in. the wafting smell of baked cinnamon goodies was to die for! grilled brie sandwich- ok, this wasn't too bad either. just made you think of a delicious grilled cheese sandwich. It wasn't special, just simple. mushroom omelet- you get what you order. It's just what you expect. nothing to die for. i gave an extra star because of their bakery goodies, but other than that its your typical sandwich/ brunch place. read more

I am in love with this place! It is like a French version of Milk and Honey or The Birchwood in Chicago with way better baked goods. You order at the counter, take a number, and they bring you your food. There are booths and tables inside and a few tables on the back patio. Don't go on a weekday for lunch unless you have time because the secret is out and the place is packed! If you never indulge in a croissant for your chicken salad, you must do so here. As with a proper French restaurant you can get sparking water. Take a glass from the station (awkwardly located in the middle of the dining room behind a big bulkhead) and add a squeeze of fresh lemon. Get your coffee for here and drink it in the proper ceramic vessel. I can't say I was that impressed with the flavor of the espresso or the consistency of the foam in my whole milk cappuccino but I'll let that slide, they make no claims of being Italian. The chocolate croissants are almost as good as the ones I had in France. Don't forget to pick up your own silverware, too! Even though the layout is kind of zany and may lead to some unnecessary trips the first time, the food is totally worth any trouble. And you're a grown-up, you'll have it down next time. read more

This place is definitely my new favorite spot for breakfast/brunch/dessert!! The bakery selection is amazing and everything I've tried has been really good!! Incredibly cute without feeling like it was trying too hard, and everything tasted great! Remarkably fast service, even though it was busy. I always used to love their cinnamon-chocolate scones at the farmer's market (I think they tweaked the recipe a few years ago and it's not as good anymore) but finally made it in the restaurant for brunch on a Saturday. We parked in the back and entered through the back entrance to order at the counter; I had the avocado tartine and a matcha latte, and my friend had a quiche with peach iced tea. The incredibly hardworking staff got through the line super quickly, and there was indoor and outdoor seating available (indoor seemed rather noisy). Our drinks came almost immediately, and food soon after-you have to go inside to get condiments, napkins, water, and utensils, which isn't immediately obvious. Everything was really tasty, and the meal was filling yet light! My friend said the peach tea was extraordinary. We took croissants to go; they do run out of bakery items. Altogether, a super nice experience! They ask that you limit your stay to 45 minutes to allow table space for the next guests. read more

Nature's most perfect food! La Mie is the most delicious place for French pastries in town. The chocolate croissants are to due for and the Cheese danish is 1st class. But I can't forget the savory ham and cheese croissant as it stands by itself.. so buttery and filled with the best quality French ham and cheese. Visited a few times before I was able to finally try the pecan roll that was recommended by the guy who works there (not sure if he was the owner but he was behind the counter every time I was there). Twice I went there about 2 hours before closing and they were out of pastries, with only some packed treats in the fridge. Finally went there in the morning this time and found a wide selection of pastries. Unfortunately, the pecan roll did not live up to expectation, looked good (as you can see in the picture) but it was hard and stale.. brought it home to heat it up in the microwave but that didn't help either :/ Also not a hygienic place.. tongs used by all hands (what if people don't wash their hands?) for the pastries were left on/by the pastries, people are walking all around the pastry area, no covers on the pastries either.. Not sure if I would be back, but if you're ever planning on visiting, make sure to go early to have the most selection... read more

Ridiculously good bread and pastries. And I am not the only one who thinks so because this place is busy! We had a pepper beef sandwich that was simple and delicious. A ham and swiss croissant that was buttery goodness. An almond croissant that was almost as good as you will find in Paris. A spinach and Feta croissant that probably beats spinakopita. And a tartlette of strawberry and cream that we ate 8 hours later... and it was still dreamy. We also took some baguette to go. It was delicious, but lacked the crispy exterior we get in France. Still.. this place is awesome! read more

A review from an actual French individual! So, here's the thing. I was born and raised in the south of France. Since moving to the United States, we've struggled to find good, classic French food locally. Then, a few years ago, my friend told me about La Mie. My life was forever changed. Their pastries (hello pain au chocolat!) are actually pretty close to the original French version! The cafe au lait is authentic and the ham and brie sandwich is a must! This even passed the "110% French Mother" test. She loves this place more than I do and always tries to go when she's in town. Is it busy? Yes. Is the waiting line a bit hectic? Sure. Is it worth it? Absolutely. La Mie- Thank you for blessing us with your presence. read more

Still one of my favorite spots in Des Moines. It gets very busy Saturday mornings starting around 10am so you must be patient and wait in line. My favorites: pecan sticky bun, ham and swiss croissant, orange cranberry scone, any of the danishes. Just grab a box if you're buying to go or grab a plate if you want to enjoy your pastries there, pick out what you want with the tongs then get in line to pay. After you pay, it's usually not too difficult to find a free table inside or a patio table in the back. Don't go too late or else items start to be sold out. Parking available in front or in the back parking lot. read more

Wow. La MIe is great. This is my first review that I have written for them but I have been there several times over the years. They are consistently good which is the hallmark of a great restaurant/bakery. Earlier this week I went to Tartine looking to crave my hankering for french pastry. Unfortunately my experience there left my cravings unsatisfied so I decided to try La Mie for lunch today. I was a bit worried because in times past there have been times when the pastry selection was somewhat sparse. Thankfully there was a good selection left on the tables when I got there at around 12.30. I chose a ham and cheese croissant (which are huge and dwarf those made by Tartine), a chocolate croissant, and a brownie. The ham and cheese croissant was crunchy and flaky as a croissant should be. The cheese had melted and reformed on the outside creating a crunchy cheesy bite which was amazing. Contrast this to the refrigerated limp croissant at Tartine...La Mie wins hands down. The chocolate croissant yield excellent pastry as well although I would say that the filling to pastry ratio on this one was a bit off. Not enough filling for the amount of buttery pastry. The brownie was a rich chocolate fudge iced brownie that had a hint of expresso flavoring. This was very good, the espresso flavor was unique and made this one memorable. Cost: 2 ham and cheese croissants, a brownie and a chocolate croissant = 9.75 Great pastry at a great price. read more
