La Mie est fantastique! The minimalist decor is super chic, and that table of delectable pastries has La Mie competing with the best cafes on the east and west coasts of America. My croissant was delicious and just the right crispy texture that makes a croissant so special--not so easy to come by. I was visiting Des Moines from San Francisco when I went to La Mie, and it's one of the reasons I look forward to my next Des Moines trip. My La Mie eating companions and I agreed; San Francisco could benefit from a cafe like La Mie. Who knew Des Moines was so sophisticated? Since La Mie was closed on Sunday (booo!), I plan to eat some of the cooked brunch options next time. Bon Appetit! read more

This is the best bakery I've been to in Des Moines. It rivals the great French pastry shops in NYC, with excellent rustic breads and patisserie. The fromage blanc quiche was good, with so many cheeses mixed into the filling, although the crust was way too leathery. They make their caramel pecan rolls with croissant dough, as well as scores of other fresh fruit and custard-filled pastries. Danishes glisten with caramelized fruit that looks and tastes farmer's market-fresh (the blueberries burst in your mouth in perfect contrast to the crunchy puff pastry.) We told the friendly hipster owner, Joe, that this would be a top destination whenever we're visiting Des Moines. You bring life, color and culture to the city! read more

We ventured to La Mie during a day of running around and "exploring". It was our target for a sweet treat, and we were pleasantly surprised. We were tempted by their coconut and lemon tarts, and are hooked. The fillings were flavorful and creamy. The crust was surprising to us as it was firm and tasty, and didn't feel like pie crust. The breads were too good to pass up. We had to try the baguette and focaccia. We tried a sample of each as soon as we got home, and have found our new bakery of choice. The baguette was smooth and tender inside with a slightly chewy crust. The focaccia was moist and had a pleasant taste of olive oil. read more

Everything I have tried on the menu at La Mie is exquisite. Their pastries, their bread, their sandwiches and coffee. They are doing something right: it's having great, honest food at fair prices in a very urban yet cozy environment. Their counter staff is helpful and efficient. It can get busy during peak times (weekend brunch and weekday lunches), but they do a great job of keeping things moving. I also think the hustle and bustle of this place works with the atmosphere. Yet once you are in a booth tucked away with a coffee and croissant you're cozy! This is a great spot to grab a $5 or $6 sandwich to take away (I recommend the turkey swiss and bacon) or a great salad (such as the roasted beet!). Or grab brunch with a friend (chocolate croissant anyone?!?!). I love this bakery. Keep up the good work, La Mie. read more

Everything is great here! Croissants and cheese famished are the perfect breakfast treat. My favorite lunch sandwich is the sprouts, cream cheese, pesto Sammie. The tuna sandwich is great too. Has currants, carrots, almonds and avocado. Dont forget to visit their booth at the downtown farmer's market. read more

La Mie is officially one of my favorite places in Des Moines. It's the quintessential hang-out spot in town and their food is just f**** spectacular. A coworker had taken me there and I had just barely moved to Des Moines at the time. My favorite item on their menu is the avocado sandwich!! It'll blow you away even though it may not suit the appetite of those carnivores out there, but never to fear because there are plenty of options for such eaters as well. All I can say is that it has an ambiance to it that is just unspeakable! Also the employees are so amiable that it reminds of my home state Texas. And the best part: free bread slices & honey. To you all of you hipsters, "groovesters", young, and young in heart don't miss it. Make sure you stop by during your lunch break or grab some friends during the weekend. And fyi, they're only open for brunch & lunch, no dinner :-(! read more

Best bakery in Des Moines. Pastries to die for. Cappuccino on point. And breakfast delicious. Enjoy brunch on patio.

Checking out the other reviews I'm afraid not much more can be said except this does appear to be one of the best places for a great bite to eat in Des Moines. I was blown away by the price of most food items and how flavorful my panini was (my friend and I exclaimed the taste was similar to Panera except like 10x better). I gotta say the real reason I'm writing this review is because of the cherry danish. The way to my heart is with ANY type cherry pastry and I must say this danish was da bomb.com. I think I bought two even though I wasn't that hungry! It helps that the facility was clean and the staff were visible and friendly. It's always a good sign when a place is packed. I plan on visiting again sometime within a year and I will be sure to try La Mie again! read more

I'm on a constant search for the world's best chicken salad croissant (my favorite sandwich), and I heard La Mie's was epic. Challenge accepted. Since I was treating myself for my birthday, I slept in and wandered to La Mie once I was ready for my first meal of the day. Ordered the chicken salad croissant (listed simply as "chicken salad with tarragon, celery, walnut and cranberries") and it was both an entree and a dessert in one. Despite my intense hunger (and hitherto insatiable sweet tooth), I could barely finish the hearty and sugary delight. While the portion size and sweetness might have exceeded my expectations, I wasn't overcome by the price (about five bucks). Since there's no need for dessert, this meal was truly a good deal. My mouth is watering and my belly is rumbling just thinking about it... read more

La Mie is a shining example of what it takes to thrive in Des Moines. It has the essential factors that make a bakery great, high quality creative baked goods, a huge selection, and that distinct local neighborhood feel. It's extremely busy on weekend mornings, but that's what kind of makes it fun. Enjoy their quick service, lively atmosphere and don't skip out on the omelets! read more

I LOVE LA MIE! my family (mostly just the girls of my family) enjoy this bakery immensely! it's always been a favorite and it's been something fun to do together for years! even yesterday i went with my mom, sister, grandma, and aunt, and we just had a fun little get together huddled in the quaint environment of la mie. :) my favorite things to get are the pecan rolls or the chocolate croissants () with the foamy and delicious caramel macchiato latte! the fun french vibes i get from this favorite little bakery of mine make me feel so at home and welcomed! i 11/10 recommend la mie to any bakery-enthusiasts on the look-out for a new spot! read more

Since moving to the neighborhood, La Mie is now a weekly staple... let's be real, I'm there are at least twice a week. The pastries are too good. Chocolate brioche is now an obsession. The staff are incredibly friendly, courteous, helpful. I've heard it gets pretty busy, but it's always quiet and comfortable just after 7:00 am! read more

Great atmosphere but went for lunch no pastries left anywhere. I had the grilled Brie great flavor big sandwich. Service was very welcoming. Fresh baked bread looked and was amazing! Next get there early for pastries! read more

When you have the impulse to buy anything and everything possible in a store, then this is the place. Unfortunate thing is it is in the middle of America, closest town (that is if you don't live in Des Moines) is 3 hours drive BUT it is worth the drive from Chicago since Au Pain Chocolate and Sweeth Thang both cease to exist, so the closest thing to paradise is at La Mie Bakery. FOOD - macarons (small and large size) stare at your face for pure devouring joy. The gooseberry Danish taste leaves you speechless with a fine tingle but sweet delicacy, especially if you have had the sour berries by themselves. The bread disappeared before we had the chance to buy it. Unfortunately they sell San Pellegrino (which I love), sacrilegious for a French bakery so if you are looking for Perrier then head to Costco. ATMOSPHERE - pleasant, beautiful granite tables with casters (don't lean on them) and booths. LOGISTICS - parking is a bit awkward. Unfortunately you have to drive and drive for hours to get to (unless you live in Des Moines, IA). CREATIVITY - fantabulous dessert + great coffee. read more

Stopped in for the first time and was shocked to see the large crowd and menu! We had a delicious lunch and grabbed a chocolate truffle cake for a birthday later that night (which was a hit). There were many people there but you would never know by the efficient service. Will definitely return. read more

I love La Mie. Almost everything they make is asbolustly delicious. Their salads are great (their dressings are delicious) and their sandwiches are unique and served on their own fresh bread. Their pastries are also incredible and not dried out chaulk like pretty much every bakery in Des Moines. Their coffee is good too. It's hard to find something bad here, but I found it today. Their quiche is not good. It used to be, but for whatever reason it isn't anymore. It tastes as if it has been sitting for days and then warmed up. It lacks any seasoning, and is just a mouthful of egg + crust. The vegetables taste as if they were simply tossed in and not sautéd before hand. It's a huge portion however. As long as you steer clear of the quiche, you will fall in love with this place in a hurry. read more

This place was very busy on Saturday morning & I soon saw why. It's popularity is due to delicious food and good service. It's a gem in the Midwest. My smoked salmon omelette with a side salad, accompanied by a giant hot latte was delicious. read more

This used to be a nice place before they opened other locations. Now that the owner is away a lot, the quality of service and food has plummeted to an all time low. The wife of the owner is extremely bad at her job. Today, all 3 of us had our orders botched. I took my sandwich back to the counter and she had a melt down, waving her hands in the air and explaining how busy they are, instead of simply taking care of it. I had to take the sandwich back a total of 3 times (!!!). After waiting forever after the 3rd attempt I receive the sandwich and it's still wrong- wow. I asked for my money back at that point. The owner's wife said something snippy and rude like "Well we're just not good enough for you", and was extremely defensive and disrespectful instead of apologizing and putting the care into the (very simple) order. Overall, none of the wait staff cared. None of them paid much attention. I had to wait forever. My party had already finished their meals and I was still waiting, yet the owner's wife had the nerve to call me "impatient" and argued with me. I could not believe it. The other day I asked what kind of broth the French Onion soup had. The cashier went and asked the cooks- they told her vegetable broth. When they brought it out it clearly was not. I took it back and asked again, "what kind of broth is this?". After a long discussion the cooks had amongst themselves they deemed it chicken broth. Not good for a vegetarian. Most of the wait staff barely speak English. It's sloppy service with no oversight. I used to be a regular and after months of enduring their horrible service I will no longer return. read more

Great place. I got the chickpea scramble. You receive a hearty, filling portion. Tons of great veggies mixed in there. Need to come back to try the baked goods! read more

Blown away by how good everything looks. So far everything we have ordered or picked off the pastry bar was great. Service is just the way I like it, mostly self serve but when you need something they are happy to help. Atmosphere was uniquely modern and inviting. Every pastry imaginable. I am looking forward to going back. read more

Only tried the bakery here, but awesome cookies and macaroons. Great macaroon selection, full of flavor, and great value for these here. They have lunch as well, heard good things from that, but haven't tried that part yet. read more

I eat all the fud here. The fud us yummy in my tummy. Then I drink the fluids there. Then I uses the terlet.

My idea of heaven. The first thing that greets you upon walking in are two tables stacked with luscious bread and pastries that look as good as they taste. They're not the fancy, artificial looking kind, but the scrumptious homemade variety. The only reason I didn't give this five stars that the omelet I had wasn't outstanding. I had the smoked salmon one which consisted only of a good-enough egg white omelet with some cold lox placed on top of it and a blob of cream cheese. It was edible, but the pastries are the main event. Save your appetite for those. read more

Oh La Mie! It's a good thing I can't get there for breakfast everyday or I'd be 1,000 lbs. The pastries and coffee are to die for, the lunch options are lovely, the bread is fabulous, and the protein bars are my favorite thing to take home for the next day. The only thing that would make it better-more space. It's really tight in there and if I'm going to drag my butt out of bed in the morning for breakfast it would be nice to be able to sit and chat a bit without being on top of the person next to me. read more

If you like your coffee to look like weak Lipton tea, look no further. It's not especially bitter, but, really, people, c'mon! Great pastry and bad coffee? Makes no sense. Great food, worthless coffee. Gotta say, though, the espresso drinks look OK, just haven't tried them. read more

A great hole-in-the-wall find! Their pastries are sweet and flaky. Their bread is crunchy on the outside, soft and delicate in the middle. Their omelettes are soft and flavorful (try the fromage, or bacon and spinach). Their cappuccino is dark and frothy, leaving a nice film of milk over your lips. Their decor is inviting and very Francais. Do yourself a favor and check this place out. read more

I wish I could give La Mie a big thank-you hug. This is the go-to lunch/brunch spot for my best friend and I whenever we find ourselves back in Des Moines. Every time I've been here, it's been wonderful - the service is quick, the atmosphere is cute and always bustling, and the food is yummy. While their pastries are renowned, I am honestly in it for the lunch fair! My bff swears by the French ham sandwich (and she's lived in France, so I think she's a pretty decent judge) and my go-to has quickly become the roasted beet & quinoa salad. Weekends (and sometimes the work week lunch hour, since it's near enough to downtown) are quite busy, so make sure you get here early for a table, and/or set aside a decent amount of time to enjoy your visit. read more

I drove an hour and a half to come to visit this bakery. I had heard great things and was very excited to check it out. I checked on the website and it states that they are open until 4:00. I come in at 3:50 to order a simple coffee or espresso. Granted, I realize that coming in ten minutes before close is an annoyance to workers, but having worked in the service industry and my family owning multiple restaurants there is one hardfast rule: serve your customers. The barista refused to serve me and one other woman. I asked, I thought you close at 4:00? And he said that they close at 3 (not true according to the website AND Google hours). He refused to serve me. I'm sorry, but if close time means that's when you start putting things away, not shutting everything down before your stated hours. Very disappointed in the blatant refusal, lying and outright rude behavior. read more

Stop by after reading the reviews since I was on a business trip to Ames. Got here around 3pm so the kitchen was closed. I got a tuna salad sandwich. All the ingredients were fresh. Hubbie and I were passing through to visit my brother and he recommended La Mie to us for good morning coffee and baked goods. We walked in the door, looked at each other and said 'In Des Moines?'. Times have changed! We were well pleased with the coffee, a breakfast of eggs and sausage for him, and a pastry for me. Not quite European, with a concession to the American fondness for sweet, but right up there with the best of 'em. We enjoyed the ambiance, the wait staff, and the people watching. We'll definitely be back next time in town. read more

If the Coffee pot was full, and the cream and milk were marked I would have given 5 stars. Great place for coffee (when the pot is full), awesome lattes (today i went with coffee). So far I have only Had Pasteries, some day i am going back for quiche.....looks great! I would say their pasteries are just as good if not better than the bake shoppe, but the bake shop has champagne cake, strage because la Mie is sorta frenchie! They treated my daughter well, and the outdoor patio is very nice! read more

A true taste of France in Des Moines, Iowa, who would have guessed it. It was packed when we went, a good sign from the start, and the French pastries sitting on the table under the glowing lights looked like heaven on earth, and upon tasting them, I was not disappointed. Flakey, buttery, soft and chewy, I can't think of much else to describe them but perfection. read more

I went to Le Mie for lunch. The salmon tartine I got was huge! It came with cream cheese, avocado, sprouts and red onions. The salmon was salty, avocado perfectly ripened. I would prefer arugula, spinach or tomato to sprouts though. The bread was really fresh, crispy crust, and soft on the inside. I also got a cappuccino, it was average. Overall the place seems really nice, good relaxing atmosphere, smell of freshly baked goods and friendly staff made it a great experience. I would definitely go back to try their omelets. read more

Go for the croissants, stay for everything else. (or at least, that's what we did!) A special Saturday morning in our house begins with croissants and coffee from La Mie, they are just amazing. But it's also a great place for brunch or a lunch meeting during the week. It gets crowded, but it's almost always possible to find parking and the line moves fast. Just wish it were open on Sundays! But I know all great bakers need a day of rest :) read more

I am usually big fan of their pastries and macarons, but am done coming here. 1. Unsanitary---you 'pack your own' pastries which means the tongs that anyone can touch (whether or not they've washed their hands) are sitting ON TOP of the pastries--yuck! 2. Macarons were totally stale that I bought in a box. 3. I tried to call the manager 3 times, and had 3 of the rudest people on the phone. They tried to give me the third degree as to the nature of my call. When I finally did reach him, he said he would look into my concerns, sounded very insincere. Need a new place for treats for my clients. read more
