Well, it is a serviceable Mexican food restaurant. They have a pretty extensive menu. However, the menu in the restaurant does NOT match the online menu, which made for some disappointment. (We were looking forward to Machaca.) Cheese enchiladas were ok when hot, congealed when not hot. A decent red gravy on the enchiladas. He had the stacked enchiladas, which he said were "okay", without enthusiasm. The salsa was all right, but the chips were substandard, and both needed salt. There aren't a lot of choices in Sonora, so we might eat there again. I had considered the Sour Cream Chicken Enchiladas but was concerned that if they weren't good, they could be very bad indeed. My son and I stopped here on Friday about 5 pm. It wasn't crowded. The staff was friendly and talkative. They make a vegetarian plate, upon request, that consists of avacado enchiladas and a double portion of rice. It is delicious! My son ordered something called a Feast. There was enough dead animal on the plate to choke someone! He is 21 and 5'9". He couldn't finish it. It was $17.99, but worth every penny. The tea was decent. This restaurant may be decent on a weekday but we had the worst service ever on a Saturday morning. Wife and I were passing thru and stopped for tacos, ordered coffee and requested cream. My wife waited I went ahead and drank the coffee without cream. Ten minutes later we stopped the waitress and ask for creamer- this time she said I'm not your servant! We never got the cream. Was very pleased to find this gem in Sonora after a long day on the road. The margaritas were among the best I've had, and I try them everywhere. The chips and salsa are made on premises and it showed. Very good and fresh. The entrees that we tried were also very tasty. For Sonora the choices are La Mexicana, the Sutton County Steak House or the Sonic. It's a 3 way tie for the best restaurant. La Mexicana is decent Texmex. There's nothing really special but the average entree is under $10. Service was particularly slow the night I went, but they had just served a large sweet 16 party. Stopped in Sonora for the night while traveling I-10. I had the tres amigos enchilada platter. Food was decent and the menu had plenty of options. The servers were friendly. Standard bad Tex-Mex. Runny refried beens, no greens on plates, ordered salads were bad (previously frozen/old greens.) On top of that, service was really slow, and not very pleasant. So, at least they've got that going for them. There are limited options in the town. There's one place by the courthouse that looks nice, but appears only open on weekdays. Out of the few non-chain options here, let it be your last. By far tastier options at La La's (Rosies). The beans are slathered in grease. Salsa is forgetful. I would have to call this a Dive. Overpriced, horrible food. Ordered a 3 enchilada plate that was $8.99. It had small enchiladas and the beans and rice was bland. Ordered a small serving of very bland queso, it might have been a 1/4 cup...$6.99. Ordered Dr Pepper to drink (it is Texas), it came in a can at $1.50 each can. The chips were awful and the salsa was below the standard of Pace Picante Sauce. I had my mind all made up as the lady at the hotel had a menu. I spotted the enchimoliades ( I think I spelled that right) - the guacamole enchiladas. I was geeked. However when I arrived and the salsa and chips were bad, I changed my mind. If they can't make salsa, they can't make guacamole. I settled on the Tejas nachos as there was the promise of sauteed mushroom and chicken and the waitress recommended it. They were there but the chicken was in giant hunks. I would have liked more mushrooms. This review is not based solely on my nachos, no. I ran to the other end of the table to taste my family's food. My sister ordered the tres amigos which is one sour cream one beef and one cheese enchilada. There were no onion in any of the enchilada dishes (you actually have to ASK for onions) therefore they were all tasteless. The beans were ultra salty. My other friend got the fajitas for 2 (please see the picture). Again there were huge chucks of chicken. How am I suppose to put that in a fajita. I ordered a big salad for dinner. The green salad that was served warm or at room temp. I ate it, but I kept wondering about safe handling practices for the other food items in their kitchen, and was my wife going to get sick later on down the highway. While I was paying the cashier asked me "How was the meal?" I answered "First time I had a warm green salad in a long time". Her answer was "I don't know what the cooks are doing back there". Makes you sort of wonder why she asked about the meal. Texans have destroyed good Mexican food with their watered down salsa, stale chips, and American style cheese, then calling it Tex-Mex. The first thing I do after crossing into New Mexican is get a big bowl of Menudo for breakfast. Nobody got sick, it's the middle of nowhere in Texas where the locals don't have high expectations, so I guess it deserves Three Stars. read more

Two stars, really? Yeah the Margarita was good and we both liked the salsa. The tortilla chips are definitely out of a bag and not even warmed. I ordered the shrimp fajitas and my wife ordered the ground beef nachos with no jalapeños. When the food came (which wasn't overly long) the order wasn't correct. My shrimp fajitas were chicken and the corn tortillas were burned. The waitress said, "Oh, I thought you ordered chicken." (Ever hear of writing down the order?) We had asked if the fajitas would be enough to share. She said she thought there were maybe 6 or so shrimp. I had to point out the menu said there were 8. (Maybe you should know your menu a bit better). My wife's nachos looked a lot like 'hamburger gravy' on the plate. 1 little dollop of sour cream and 1 little dollop of guacamole. And a lot of jalapeños. The 'cheese' was a lot like Cheez Whiz or maybe Velveeta. Definitely not a real nacho cheese. Then the waitress asked her if she wanted chips for her nachos. Helloooooo, shouldn't they have been on the plate prior to adding the other ingredients? Now back to my chicken. Most definitely from a can or at least purchased (probably frozen) already cut up. The pieces were chunks very consistent in size, (not small strips for fajitas) and pretty dry. Not a lot of flavor there. However the onions and the few green & red peppers were fair. All in all the fajitas tasted like a 'kit.' Not freshly sliced veggies. We added a slice of the Tres Leche cake to go. Ate that at home and it was fair. Based on our experience, I would not return. I think it makes Taco Bell seem like a gourmet place. I tried to look past the negative reviews before heading there, but now I must agree with them. read more

We were spending the night in Sonora and discovered quickly that there isn't much to choose from when it comes to dinner options. La Mexicana was adjacent to our motel so we decided to try it. It was a dingy little place but reasonably clean and we were tired and hungry, so we got a booth and sat down. Waitress was prompt with our beer order, but when I asked her what the best thing they made was, she looked at me like I had two heads and just shrugged. Ok...I ordered the Three Enchilada plate which consisted of one chicken, one cheese and one beef enchilada. The food was served quickly and the chicken and cheese enchiladas were...not bad. Actually pretty good. The beef was not terrible, but I left half of it on the plate. The refried beans were ok but the rice was strange and peppery. Literally. Like white rice with a lot of black pepper. Didn't taste bad, but didn't seem like any Mexican rice I'd had before. The chips were cold and dry and straight from a bag and the hot sauce tasted like tomato sauce with a splash of jalapeno juice in it. Yeck! If I ever have the misfortune to overnight in Sonora again, I will probably just make a run down to the Sonic. I wouldn't eat here again. read more

Did not enjoy this place, my plate was hot but the food wasnt! My entire familys food was cold and did not taste fresh. The service wasnt good as well i did not get the fork i asked for or the check or the salsa we had to get them ourself or we didnt get it at all.
