About two weeks ago I finally did my smog check. For whatever reason, I always seem to be waiting until the last minute. I simply went to the place closest to the office I was working from that day. I hadn't even realized that I needed a star station, but luckily this was one, since, after I actually bothered to read the paper from the DMV, that is what I did need. Anyway, I was quoted a price of $55, which is about what I remember paying other places. The owner was quiet, but efficient. I sat at a small outdoor table during this process. The whole process took about 10 minutes.I then was in my car and on my way. Exactly a week later, my stickers came in the mail. I am a first time customer here and regret it. I was near the area and figured why not since they are down the street from where I was at the moment. I am of military background and deploy next week so I didn't want to worry about rushing so here I am...worst decision ever. I believe a 1 star rating is fair because I was charged for this "inspection" but failed even though the vehicle passed with flying colors according to current standards legally too. I will admit the staff was friendly but let's be real friendly or not a scam is a scam. That's like saying hey I was robbed so I gave the guy my wallet but he was nice so I'll give him a 2 star. No! Friendly or not money is money and if you pay for a service you expect proper results! But hey, don't take my word for it keep reading and you'll continue to see why I would never recommend this place to anyone... I rated them a 1 star because my car passed the emissions test which is the whole point of a smog check as to prevent unnecessary and harmful emissions from being scattered amongst our air here in CA. My car is a 2006 but the OEM catalyst was removed and replaced professionally years ago. It was a 100% compliant and legal replacement. ONLY replaced due to failure/check engine light. Like a good person would they were replaced ASAP so that one is not gross polluting the air with a failed part. This vehicle has been smogged like this every few years easily passing over and over with zero issues legally. The smog tech gave me information to contact the State Ref if I disagree with his inspection and failure which is a nice gesture but in my situation how can I do this now when I will be leaving for work and registration is due?! Sure, you might say well don't work or hey why don't you just non-op it? Unfortunately, I can't just not work as I have a family to support. As for non-oping it and dealing with it when I get back I can't do that because I do not have a garage to store this car in and I legally cannot just leave it parked in the road until I get back. Sad reality isn't it? So think again before coming here because this is stressful to say the least. I have kids to worry about, why worry about a smog that already passed?! I will be disputing this as well as contacting the Better Business Bureau as consumers need to look out. I am not saying everyone will have a bad time here. But money is hard to make now a days and getting a failure do to a tech with a lack of confidence and experience is a poor excuse for failing a 100% compliant vehicle. This applies to any business...You pay for it and get an answer due to poor CONFIDENCE/EXPERIENCE how would you feel? Imagine if you needed any car repair done and the tech stated sorry I couldn't fix your car because I am NOT CONFIDENT AND EXPERIENCED enough to do it but here's a card to another shop (STILL CHARGES YOU FOR THE WORK THOUGH!!!) Be nice to get a disclaimer up front telling me this and I would have left right away. I don't have time for nonsense and I am sure if you are reading this neither do you! But don't take my word for it here is the law stating it is legal... "Under the new regulation a pre-OBD II (pre-2009) converter can pass the smog check as long as it was installed before 1/1/09" Here in the United States of America we have something called freedom. We are all innocent unless proven guilty. I will admit I was not able to furnish proof of replacement at the time as I have better things to do than sit and collect paper receipts over 10 years old than drive back before they close and I live pretty far from this place so it's pointless. Bottom line, find another shop even if it means driving out of the area because you live close to these guys. I noticed this shop is fairly cheaper than other Smog stations... They could possibly have tons of business due to pricing cheaper but only to fail who cares if its cheaper. Again, not here to spread hate and misinformation but facts are facts. The tech might have been trained to fail certain vehicles for whatever reason but again why take a chance and waste money with these guys when way better shops out these follow proper guidelines like I quoted above. If a vehicle passes it passes!!! There are limits in the automotive field for a reason. To TELL YOU WHAT LIMITS ARE GOOD!!! I PASSED WITH FLYING COLORS. read more

I've never actually had to get a smog check before and boy, was my first one an experience. My car had some recalls (including one related to emissions) that I got fixed a day or two before I came here for my smog test. Apparently, during the fixing of the recall, my car's computer was reset and so my smog test couldn't be completed. I had to drive around some to get more data. Tony told me this and only charged me partially for the test and said I could come back at a later date when it actually could be completed and then I would only have to pay the remainder. I really appreciated this. This started a journey that took months, with me coming back every few days, and Tony letting me know that I still didn't have enough data and needed to drive around more. It was so frustrating that my car dealership didn't tell me about any of this, but Tony was great. He was always friendly and would check my car right away when I showed up to see if it was ready for the smog test. Finally, after 6 months (I wasn't able to come in during a couple of those months due to COVID-19) my car was ready! He finished up my smog test in just a couple of minutes and charged me for the remainder of what I had started back in January. I went to the DMV immediately after, and (after an hour and a half of waiting in line) they already had my data. So glad I came to La Mesa Smog Check and so glad I was able to finally get everything taken care of! If you need a smog check, definitely come here! read more
