I am only reviewing the store. The location is a bit creepy. I would not visit after dark. Odd characters loiter around the parking lot and pan handlers wait for people to exit. If you can get past that, I LOVE this store. Hubby and I binge watch cooking shows on YouTube. I am working on lifestyle changes and cooking healthier. This international store has Asian, Indian, African and Hispanic products. The produce is wonderful. You can find fresh cilantro (3 bunches for $1.00), inexpensive ginger (quality bunches for approx $3.50) and lots of fresh herbs. The tofu selection made me cry. There are items I haven't heard of. There isn't just one of anything. There are shelves dedicated just for soy sauce. One aisle was stocked with rices and dried beans. The "scarey section" (i.e. meats & seafood) wasn't as shocking as the Alexandria LA Mart (no goat heads). There were lots of fish and seafood choices. The dessert and sweets rows had interesting items. As a ketchup recovering addict, I never knew there were tomato candies. I suggest visiting this location. read more

This store is very dirty. Litters everywhere and its so messy inside, its very unhygienic and very unsanitary. I saw a rat in there the other day and i saw another one today eating the veggies on the vegetable stalls. I also saw rats dropping in the little corner. Its disgusting. This grocery store holds just about everything you need, from produce to meats to cookery to dry food stuffs. I like to get my produce here since there's usually some type of bargain price on a couple of items, and everything is generally low price to begin with. Just ensure that the food your choosing isn't going bad (no signs of mold and whatnot) for things like packaged cherry tomatoes! The meats are nice to look through too;they offer beef, pork, chicken, turkey, and a ton of fish. Dry beans, legumes, and rice are available as well as the standard cereals, dry pasta, sauces, canned goods, and what have you. The only lacking aisle is the dairy section. There is not much to choose from for things like yogurt (no Greek yogurt from what I saw), and most cheeses are Latin-cuisine based cheeses (think queso). However, the basics are here and I like to come and see the different offerings they have for the given week. Definitely worth dropping by to look! (One thing to note: a minimum purchase of $10.00 is needed for credit card transactions!) (Also: bags like backpacks or your own grocery bags aren't permitted and have to be handed to the front. They'll clip a tag to the bag, give you a copy of the tag, and keep it behind the counters for you until checkout.) read more

I go there today and the price mark in front of the item say one thing, and at the register it rang up an higher price, and as an customer I should get the price i see mark in front of it but, they charge me the higher price and expect me to accept that price, And try to make me paid the price that rang, no form of customer assistant to resolve the issues. They just want me to accept whatever price they gave me not what it's mark. This happen before , no budging on their part to adjust the price because they were wrong on their part. Friendly staffs, always with a smile. If you're looking for some hard to find foods, this is the place to be. You can find pretty much everything in here esp. Asian foods(Frozen fish, squid, cattle fish, shrimp balls). A good varieties of Vietnamese, Korean, Filipino and Spanish. They have fresh meats and Seafoods(Crabs and oysters). Only con If I may is the place, always crowded and very small space in each aisle. Pretty much an aquarium full of fish to get into. Although I do really want to love every small grocery store I visit...I don't think I'll be back to LA mart. It was really frustrating to try to actually do my shopping here. The aisles (especially in the produce section) are far too small to get through with a cart comfortably (while there are other shoppers and employees around). The prices for produce were mostly comparable to (but sometimes a little higher) than Grand Mart. I should mentioned that I did not try any of the meat from here...which is what most other reviewers seem to love about LA mart. read more

This is the only store I go to get my meat and my eggs! You can not beat there prices, not even shoppers can compare to the prices here, they may not know how to speak English or understand it, but trust me when I say the prices are the best! Where else can you get ox tails for 2.99 pnd? No where!!! read more

Love the prices. I can usually get 3-7 cucumbers for $1. Tomatoes for either 99. or 1.29 a lb. Bell peppers are always much cheaper than safeway or giant. Aldi is great for frozen food but for produce I love La Mart. read more

I shop here from time to time, but expect rotten food, rodents, and an anti-consumer attitude. It's an aftermarket grocery. That said, especially for stuff you going to cook the germs off of, it's often useful as it has a more international and Asian variety than other local groceries. Go to H Mart for twice the price if you want a better grade. read more

there is a church next door, but you don't know if it is a coincidence. there is a 7-11 in front of it and you know it is intentional. there are many men who hang around all day in the parking lot for a bus that never comes. trash always seems to floating around. if you didn't know any better...... you would be scared. what did ginsberg know? and what did whitman before him? the world is in here. there are many voices in here. some may speak your language. some may not. the ladies from what the french called indochina can sell you gold in here while the men sit at their desk and ply away with giant glass eyes to help them see. SUPER MERCADO the voice booms across the store. LA MART EN SILVUR SPREENG!!!! and then the tv plays a video where men in cowboy hats sing and girls in little dresses dance. you grab your basket and search for fruit and vegetables. on a good day, most of it will be good and some even fresh. you squeeze by the colorful lady from africa in her colorful bonnet to pick up some okra, and battle the family from india for the last of the mangos, and help an el salvadorian woman pick out some green onions, and stare curiously at the jack fruit and giant spiked dorian, while children from columbia crawl between your legs while picking up a massive tub of peeled garlic for $2. you contemplate over a coconut and some agave and lemon grass, but decide on the acorn squash. there's no room for garcia lorca's here or ovid's or whitman's. they are no match for the people here. the stories they carry with them in their baskets. their ancestors live in their palates and in their dreams. they buy breads baked by the inca, by the maya and the aztecs. they buy dreams blessed by the candles of the virgin mary. they honor their grandparents by eating chicken feet and tripe and ox tail. the fish they buy is no allegory. it is fresh and live and they used every bit of it. there are beans and sauces from every latitude and longitude, marked and unmarked, across the sphere. there are bags of rice; jasmine, sweet, brown, and white, but no uncles. and the coffee the buy from the wake of katrina costs $5 here and $8 at the fair market supermarket. this is america. the voices swirl around and dance with dreams and fruits of suspicious character. all is one. voices dream read more

LA Mart has some of the best prices on "fresh" produce in the area. I don't actually know about the actual freshness of the food, considering their strawberries are sometimes more sour than their lemons and their plantains are so brown they resemble monkey droppings. However, $1/lb for orange bell peppers? 12/$1 limes? $0.79/lb grapes? $2.49/lb for fresh salmon steaks? Really not going to complain about the nuances of quality given the price - if you can't find a good specimen after digging around, get it somewhere else, but the other great deals in this small store mean you should probably give it a shot. It mainly caters to Hispanic and Asian tastes, and to a lesser extent, Caribbean and African tastes. They offer Injera bread and red bean buns. You won't find anything extremely specific here, but for general purposes this is a great little place to pick up some cheap produce. If you're looking for some household items, they'll usually have detergent and other random things on sale at pretty good prices as well. read more

Where else can you get delicious, tender, robust, 10 lb lobster for $6.99 / Lb. How about 5 bunches of cilantro for $1 or 14 limes for $1 or 4 large fresh zucchini for $1. This store is a place you go to buy fresh fruits, vegetables, fish, meats for tremendous bargain prices. BUT do not go with a list. The Korean proprietors buy what they can of any fresh produce or meats at bargain prices but stocks them even if not able to find them cheap. Strawberries range from 50 cents per box to $5.00 depending on what was in surplus that day. Bought mangoes for as little as $1 per box one time but other times at $4.99, $15.99.... varies. For those who want excellent food at bargain prices, this is the place IF YOU do not shop with a list but rather shop for items the store has as a bargain. read more

I am reluctant to give away the secrets of my very favorite place to shop for fresh produce to the masses...but, here it goes- LA Mart is truly an International scene. It's definitely different and an acquired taste for those brought up on Wonder bread, and used to shopping at Giant's or Safeway.For a suburban American, it's like shopping in another country. I agree with the above poster, poetic description and appreciation, but I think LA Mart deserves more stars... For fresh (usually) produce at the best prices and wide variety, and for certain select meats like hamburger and skinless, boneless checken breasts & tenders. And Guava and Mango juice. Or if I need the best oriental sauces and spices that you normally would have to go out of the way to find in an oriental market. -This is the stuff the real ethnic groups shop for and eat at home. White, Black, Hispanic, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese-there's something for everyone, and they all shop here. Suburbanites to immigrants. And yeah, the jewelry counter and even a separate cookware section are kind of funky, but totally unintrusive and part of the character of the place. When I come here, I rarely spend over $20 dollars for a cart full of fresh food. I spend $40 at Giant, and I'm lucky to get half as much. Cheesy but cheery Latin pop music pumps through the speakers, with an occasional ad in Spanish as if it's a K-mart special. I don't know Spanish, and at first it bothered me. Now I look forward to the energy of the music, and if it's not there- I miss it. I shop for the fresh produce at the lowest prices ANYWHERE! (Where else can you get huge cucumbers for instance, for up to THREE for A DOLLAR!) Or snow peas as low as $2 to $3 dollars. Delicious. ripe tomatoes on the vine, 3 to 4 bucks elsewhere, for only $1.29. Prices on apples and other fruit, citrus, etc are often half to two thirds the price of anywhere else. Green peppers and red sometimes under a buck. Cheapest romaine lettuce. Sometimes some of the produce is suspect, maybe they're getting tail lots, but most times it's just as good as anywhere else, including places like Giant. Every market gets some poor quality sometimes. LA Mart has the very BEST, and freshest hamburger meat, and it is actually ground fresh in the store. The fat content is premium-usually less than 10% yet still make juicy tasty burgers- with little fat in the pan. The best part? IT costs less than the rot gut at the major groceries! How about $1.80 to $2.60 per pound, versus the cheapest burgers at Giant at 25% fat for 3.99 or more. This quality would cost at least $5 anywhere else. LA Mart and Bestway both have great hamburger meat. AND IT STAYS RED WITHOUT GETTING RANCID FOR A WHOLE WEEK!!! (If you wrap and store it right. (If it was red dye, or high fat content, the meat would still smell and spoil-that's how you can tell LA's is the real deal.) And they have a huge fresh fish counter, second only to Bestway-but LA has much better and wider variety of produce. The checkout girls speak little English, but are very efficient and there are rarely long lines, as the yalways put enough out there to handle the rush. (Shame to the cheapskates at Giant's and Safeway). And now to why it doesn't get 5 stars: Most other cuts of beef are lower grade, and cater to the tastes of their latin clientele. Even prime cuts like prime rib look more like second grade mystery meat, though the prices are better. The chicken breasts are occasionally tough, as they must come from larger, older birds than Purdue's. As a single person, the fish are too large to buy without most of it spoiling and the fillets are no cheaper than Giant's. And their "American" shelf goods, canned stuff, cereals, and the like are much more expensive than Giant's WHEN you can catch a sale. And it seems that Latinos just have absolutely no taste for pretzels. And they're not very big on ice cream either. And LA as well as other marts in the area just don't stock them. I find that I have to shop at two to three stores to get the best from each. LA mart for fresh produce, hamburger, tropical juice nectars, and sometimes chicken. Giant for the basic shelf food stuffs, canned soups, etc, when on sale- and Breyer's ice cream when they're 2 for $5. Snyder's in Silver Spring for NY bakery bread, remainders-=still fresh and at great prices for the heartiest, fresh, breads around. And the only place I can find chopped liver outside of a Jewish kosher mart. The delly, and occasional great sales of quality cuts of steak, and boneless breasted chicken (seems always under $3lb.) And occasional cheap wines. You do have to shop carefully to take best advantage of what LA Mart has to offer. But if you do, you'll be amply rewarded. Anyway-go twice to LA. The first time to get acclimated, the second to take advantage of what they do best. And the third-start letting the cheesy music get to your head-even if you don't want to. read more
