Forget Florence and Pisa and Montalcino and head south to where the coffee and bread are ten times better. This second story gem is down at sea level in the port of Pozzuoli, and I have eaten there about twenty times. Be advised: the menu is very, very limited. You can get a starter of octopus or a plate of olives. There are a couple of seafood pastas and risotto pescatore. Then you can get some fish or some fried calamari or shrimp. That's about it. But the guys who run the place are great, and I love to watch them interact with foreigners --- by which I mean anyone who lives more than ten miles away!! I first ate here in about 1986, and the young guy that was our waiter then was our waiter in April of this year, and one of the old cooks was still down in the kitchen. Don Antonio and his wife are long gone, but his son is still there every night it is open. I highly recommend this place for an adventurous eater, but don't go there and waste a table if you are wanting some sort of special fancy meal. Located near the island's port, this restaurant is an excellent way to get an authentic "taste" (sorry) for the island's seafood-focused cuisine. Entree options are fairly limited and dependant on what was caught earlier that day. I'd recommend going the family style route as everything is worth trying. We started with an interesting tower of mozzarella, shrimp crudo and pesto, which may have been my favorite dish of the night. For an entree, I had paccheri with seafood which was amazing, as were the raviolis. The nutella/cocunut cake is worth the sugar-splurge as well. La Medusa is owned and operated by twin brothers Marco and Luca, so be sure to introduce yourself. This restaurant is the antithesis of a swanky hotel restaurant, and that's exactly why you'll love it.

Basically: you go and order a bottle/ a growler of wine, you eat with the guy that caught your fish that day as they talk about their famileis and wives! You also eat with Italian tourists! Aka the Italians from the mainland that came here on a their massive yatchs! The restaurant will send you a tiny boat to your yatch to pick you up for free. Though its pretty much a stone throw away, ya can't swim to here. So rocky! Plus watching people stumble and crawl on those fishing boats is pretty much a bonus!! Alright so back to food. First and foremost: you gotta sit outside. No AC here! Doesn't matter how hot. You're lucky you have fans! Plus you get to see the beautiful Castle! It lit the area up substantially at night!! This island is wayyyyy worst when it comes to meat. Aka NOOOOO meat! Zeroooooo! My diet include 80% seafood regularly but this place got me craving meat after a while. We were lucky to find them open. They were cooking up delivery pizza, and they welcomed us inside, we were the only guests. The owner was kind, I ordered an amaro, we were told the menu was limited to pizza, that day. Well, we'd heard a thing or two about the Italian's pizza expertise, so we went for it, our first -- and one of the most memorable -- pizza sessions of our stay, on or off the mainland. This is just my take, but seems to me most Italian restaurants get the whole Napolitan recipe right. The secret to marvelous pie is forking into the whole thing as soon as it comes outta the oven, like, as close to burn-your-tongue as possible.
