I came back a second time for the lomo de puerco en salsa verde y nopales (pork loin in green sauce…read morewith cactus). It was just as good I remembered--bright, fruity sauce with a strong kick, and tender pork. The rice and beans were pretty standard, but I was glad that they served it with fresh iceberg lettuce. My spouse ordered menudo this time, as it was a weekend. My spouse enjoyed the menudo and insisted on leaving out the lime juice. I thought the menudo broth would have benefited from the lime juice, but was glad he at least added the fresh onion and cilantro. The meats were definitely tender. As before, the hot tortillas complemented the meal well. And we also got chips and two kinds of salsa before our food. This time we ate in the dining room, and we were impressed by the care taken in creating a welcoming space. The walls were painted to simulate a stucco building, with extra texture added in. Other walls had beautiful murals. Windows carved out of the interior walls held colorful vases. I witnessed the easy banter the staff held with the customers. The other customers seemed to be regulars, or the staff treated them as if they were. Our own server was friendly and attentive. The bathrooms were old and small, but well maintained. They refilled the soap and kept the area clean. I don't see this level of care taken for a bathroom very often. We marveled that our meals were inexpensive, even though the menu appears to have new prices. For the same price you can get a fast casual meal at a chain restaurant, we got a nice, flavorful handmade meal with leftovers. As before, definitely worth the detour from the highway.

I ordered a ground beef chimichanga. I was given a torta. I said to the waitress "I don't think this is what I ordered." She said "torta?" I said I ordered a ground beef chimichanga. She looked at the ticket and laughed and said "yes you did!" So my fiance started eating her fajitas while my food was being prepared. The fajitas weren't BAD, but they weren't good either. Very bland, absolutely zero seasoning on them. It wasn't long before my food arrived. The rice and beans were actually really good. The "salad"...I swear, it's the bagged salad mix from Walmart. Lettuce, red cabbage and carrots. A tiny little cup of sour cream and another with guacamole. The chimichangas were nasty. I got three small ones, very thick breading, or whatever it was. It definitely wasn't a deep fried tortilla. Each one had a small amount of ground beef and a large amount of semi melted cheese inside. I was actually starting to feel nauseous eating them. And I 100% believe they were frozen. I've never seen chimichangas like these before. Of course you are given chips and salsa. The chips were approaching stale. One of the salsa's was delicious, the other was like watery ketchup. Overall, a few hits, a few average items, and some of the worst Mexican food I've ever eaten.
