The entire vibe from the moment you walk in feels welcoming. The events are sooo much fun, I highly recommend checking one out. The book selection is thoughtfully designed with diversity and representation in mind. It truly amplifies voices that are often underrepresented. I appreciate the resources for immigrant advocacy materials, support and fundraisers. They also host many community workshops, like sewing, hair braiding, and open mic events. Community building and creating resources for empowerment is one component. It's definitely not just a book store but a pillar in the community by creating space where identities are uplifted.

There offer two types of admission tickets. The $5 one is where you walk around yourself but only have access to one of the buildings. It is well worth it to pay the $20 for the guided tour where you get to see both buildings. Tour takes about 90 minutes and is at a leisurely pace. The 2nd building is 3 stories but does have an elevator if needed. Parking- Large private lot with plenty of parking.

If you like mild, easy, typical art- this isn't your place. Virga Gallery was my favorite stop…read morewhile visiting several of the galleries as well as the local museum across the street. Every piece is bold, energetic, full of life and motion- everything from abstract representations of nature, to glittering eye candy, to light shining through intricate paper cut outs, to fine art paintings that connect you to something beyond. The gallery's namesake Virga, who is the owner and a featured artist, is a delight as well. She's a proud, fiery person and her work is pure genius. I loved my time spent in Virga Gallery, and tried to really slow down and understand each piece- which I really recommend doing. I will definitely be back, and hopefully will purchase one of these beautiful pieces in the future.

You must not have had very many experiences with potential customers. Most art galleries I have been too, either clearly state that no pictures can be taken of the art or they do not have a sign and they don't mind. Yours, however is very particular. You do not have a clearly posted sign but you do have an opinion! I guess it's the worst of both worlds.

Hours are usually 12-5 but they host a late night on Thursdays. Parking was just outside the building and you'll have to pay the minimum $4 for two hours ($8 for all day). This part of the campus is really cute, with its yellow buildings topped in moss. The gallery has four rooms. Hard to say what was my absolute favorite but the ceramic room was stunning, as were the large portraits.

But aside from the superior…read moreSpeed at University of Louisville, they have been 3 or 2 star museums like the Fowler at UCLA, the Northern Arizona University Art Museum, SDSU Downtown Gallery, and Beall at UC Irvine. The CSUN Art Galleries weren't much different. Located in the north end of campus off North University Drive, the "Valley Vista" exhibition in the Main Gallery had a couple nice pieces to make for a pleasant 20 minute visit. The best artwork was donated by former CSUN art teachers. Given that there was no Yelp listing for the Main Gallery, I was expecting it to be dead on a Thursday evening, but there were plenty of people dropping in which was good to see. I guess the free admission helps attract people, but parking is a pain unless you already have a CSUN parking permit. At the opposite end of campus, there is a small gallery in the Valley Performing Arts Center (VPAC). It is located on the third floor on the left side past the restrooms. Of course, you need to see a concert to access the gallery so seeing all galleries in one visit is virtually impossible. I've enjoyed seeing the thoughtful art in the VPAC gallery during every intermission and like this gallery more than the Main Gallery. Note: I categorized this place as a "museum", but Yelp changed it to "art gallery" which is a subcategory of "shopping" and refuses to change it back. They do not sell art here.
