Honestly, I was expecting a lot more. This restaurant came recommended by my Spanish teacher and…read moreother websites I came across while researching gluten free options in Madrid. Their menu is marked well so you can rest assured they know about allergies. However, the service left something to be desired. Two servers worked the floor while we were there and we got the dud between the two. He was hasty and not listening well. We ordered the squid ink spaghetti and a pizza, artichokes to start. The artichokes were our favorite - Spanish artichokes are delicious and they were done well here, tender and paired with a great aioli. The actual entrees lacked taste and texture- the shrimp was over cooked and the pasta was in need of flavor. You need reservations here since they fill up quickly. I'd come back since it's a gluten free safe restaurant but I wouldn't say it's a must try in Madrid.

The rest of the early crowd was quick in ordering, obviously knowing the menu by heart. We started with the burrata, served with a nice arugula salad. It was a pleasant starter with traditional flavor, very enjoyable with a glass of wine! Pasta was on the brain for all of us. The stars of the meal were the Pest Gnocchi and Spaghetti Bolognese. The gnocchi were obviously house made, plump and tender. The pesto cream sauce was full of flavor and matched perfectly with the gnocchi. The Bolognese was a close second, obviously a nice slow cooked sauce that was very traditional in flavor and brought a lot to the party. Both the Black Pasta or Fettucine either. Both had solid traditional flavors and were well prepared. The deserts were a nice add, simple, traditional and made in-house. The cheesecake was moist and the tiramisu was full of flavor. This is a simple and traditional Italian spot. Wonderful service with no frills, and a great family environment. They also have a solid wine list. Enjoy!

Quick note before the review: This is not the same restaurant it used to be some years ago. Old…read more5-star reviews were well deserved by that time. The food's quality was terrible: - The pizza ingredients were very low quality and not well distributed. - We ordered a simple margherita and it didnt even contain basil leaves. - We ordered a different pizza with egg and bacon: it was also really bad. - Even the balsamic vinegar was bad. (They only had once of these thick vinegar bottles, and the cap was all dirty) - the focaccia was the worst: It has a thick section that was half baked, and the rest of it looked like a thin crispy bread/cookie For the staff: - The staff tried to avoid adding the discount from the reservation. After complaining, they fixed it, but you shouldn't need to complain to prevent being charged extra. - The staff was a bit lost on what was their menu. - They were polite at least The restaurant: - This used to be a different restaurant, one of the best pizza places in Madrid. About aprox. 2 years ago, the owner sold the restaurant and a different one was put in place of it. However, they decided to keep the name of the restaurants as well as all the excellent reviews it had in apps like yelp and trip advisor. While it could be a bit unfair to compare, as it is a completely different restaurant, in which only the name of it remained, the restaurant now has cheaper prices than the original one from years ago, but the ingredients are even cheaper, so in reality, the quality to prize ratio got a massive negative impact.

The chef also provide a very small appetizer. The service was very good. They split each of the orders for us. Our table for two was in a quiet area. We spoke with the chef a couple of times. In Madrid for Father's Day weekend .. also happened to be my husband's birthday. Our hotel recommended a Vanvera so off we went. We arrived at opening -- overall, we found the service to be friendly. Chef did stop briefly at our table, but definitely did not pay the level of attention that I've read in other reviews. That high level of attention was given to people at tables surrounding us though. Started off with the burrata, which was promising. For mains, daughter ordered pomodoro, husband and I each ordered the spicy pork sauce, son ordered the truffled mushroom pasta. Ya'll know one important fact from reading my reviews: you can gauge the quality of an Italian chef simply by the quality of his basic pomodoro sauce. We didn't find anything redeeming in a single dish including the pomodoro. There was truffle in the mushroom sauce, but no salt, no follow through. (in fact, there was no salt or additional flavor in anything we ordered) The spicy pasta was well, spicy, by virtue of it being a spicy pasta .. no pork to be seen and the pomodoro was acidic. Tried to find redemption in the dessert; meh. Didn't even send us out the door with a limoncello. Two stars because we wouldn't return even to have dinner with friends.
