La Flor has been an Elgin staple since I was a little kid. They tore down their old building a few years ago and rebuilt a newer more state of the art taco shop. They have their own stand alone parking lot which is well lit at night, right at the corner of Slade and Dundee Avenue. The prices have gone up quite a bit since I was there last, so Tuesday when they do $1 tacos is the best bet. Today's visit I got a 4 steak taco meal and it was $17. Seems a bit obtuse for tacos, but they are really tasty. Due to Covid it is take out only of course. The steak tacos were flavorful and cooked to perfection, as were the rice and beans that accompanied the meal. They also give you two different sauces, Red and Green, both are delicious. In closing, La Flor is a great taco shop that is worth a try. If you do, I'm sure you'll be hooked like I have been for over 30 years. It's a must stop for me when I'm in town, just like Beef Villa. read more

We visit here a couple times per week for breakfast. The menu has so many options and things also available on the children's menu for picky eaters. My favorite is the chiliquiles with green sauce made fresh. When you arrive they provide hot chips freshly made with salsa during your visit. I have had the steak torts which was also awesome and chorizo and eggs which are incredible and not greasy This place is kiddie corner from gee n jays so you might miss it. This place was good years ago, then started going downhill. So we saw they did a remodel and decided to try it again right? It got worse. Not only is the girl kinda short and not very nice. BUT the fries were even terrible. I think they were left in grease and they were terribly soggy. Also cold. She literally had given us the food and it came out of the kitchen too. I avoid this restaurant as much as I can. I've placed about 10+ ordes for breakfast chorizo and eggs through GrubHub. No order reviewers can say the same. I ask them to add lettuce and they rarely do. I've called them to add lettuce to my breakfast and 50% of the or time less they add. They don't under what 'Pleas add lettuce' means. They hassle you when you call to them to add. They don't seem to understand what add lettuce means, seriously! They are horrible and traumatizing to deal with. Forget this place! Don't ask them for anything. Go elsewhere! The last time I was there to pick up food, the guy at the register sang the chorus to a Bad Bunny song at the top of his lungs as song as I walked up to the register! I was mortified! This is really disappointing to do but La Flor was our favorite taco place for years. My wife has even posted very complimentary things here. Unfortunately we both are currently very ill from steak tacos we ate yesterday. We have been extremely sick for over 16hrs now. I have tried calling to tell them twice now and Monica hung up on me the first time immediately when I explained our experience. I called back and she answered again. I asked to speak w the manager and she kept asking "the manager". When I said yea she kept telling me he is busy. She hung up again. Terrible service and we have a legitimate concern. La Flor's food is the best Mexican in Elgin in my belief. You get great taste and generous portions. I always do carry out since the interior is in serious need of an update. The prices over the years have climbed up and for the most part I agree with them, but I feel as if their tacos are a bit overpriced. We stopped at this place on our way back home. I was craving a quick bite of cheap authentic Mexican food. Ive know Elgin to have a few Mexican places so I yelped and came across this place. From the appearance of the place it seemed pretty authentic, they also had a variety of food from tacos, burritos to tongue and seafood. My husband ordered 2 chicken tacos and I ordered a huarache with asada meat. The tortillas were pretty cheap tasting, ad my huarache had a pound of lettuce with some kind of cheese but I was disappointed it wasn't crumbling cheese. This happened last year, but it needs to be known. Went there late night, with a group of friends. They advertise (on the wall) a $2.50 quesadilla; that's what I ordered. We ate (food was decent) but after I paid my bill, I see that I was charged $5 for the quesadilla. When I tried to talk to the girl, she said that she brought me a different quesadilla and that because I ate it, I was basically out of luck. She was beyond rude and literally turned her back to me, and ignored me when I asked to speak to a manager. That was the *2nd* time something like that had happened to me there... the first time, I had ordered the advertised 99 cent tacos. Once again, I was charged more for them because they added tomatoes... something you don't think you are going to be charged for when THEY ask if you want them. They refused to adjust the bill and were rude. Lesson #1: always check the bill before paying it. Lesson #2: don't go to Tacos La Flor. Tacos Comales (2 blocks away) is much better. read more

I was heading out to dinner with my daughter today. We were headed to Los Comales in Elgin, but decided to give Tacos La Flor a try. This is a pretty small place. We were seated, and our waitress brought chips and salsa to the table. The chips were fresh and warm, and the salsa was pretty decent, with cilantro and onion. We placed our orders; my daughter opted for steak tacos, and I ordered one each, steak, pastor and chorizo. These are Mexico City style with mini corn tortillas. The pastor was tasty, and had a nice tender texture. They were happy to hold the pineapple as I requested. The flavor was very much of BBQ. It was very good, but different than the style of other nearby restaurants like Los Comales. The steak was excellent. It had really good flavor, and was very tender. My daughter also gave the steak a strong "thumbs up". The chorizo taco was also very good. Again, the style of the chorizo was different than I expected. Usually, chorizo is quite salty, strongly seasoned, with a tart kick from the vinegar. It's also finely ground like ground beef. The chorizo at Tacos La Flor, is more of a solid sausage texture. It had a nice flavor, but was not as spicy or as salty as is typical. It was also leaner, and not as greasy as what I usually get. This was a nice change of pace. I like both styles, but I would have no problem ordering again. The waitress was attentive, but she spoke very little English.She had no problem understanding the order, and was able to customize my tacos. I attempted to ask here about the different style of chorizo, but I did not have much luck with that. In any event, she was quite pleasant, and the food was delivered to the table hot and as ordered. This is my favorite Mexican place in Elgin. It's not very fancy but the server is always very nice and attentive. It's atmosphere is similar to a hot dog place except with mexican food, music and soap operas. :) They have a burrito special for $5.99 where you get a burrito with FRIES?? I got a chorizo burrito special even though i wasn't sure about the idea of fries with a burrito and OH MAN. These fries are out of this world. And more importantly, the chorizo burrito was probably the best burrito i've ever had. It wasn't too dry or too greasy which is easy to do with chorizo. it was perfect, and the other toppings are evenly distributed through it as well. Every other thing i have ordered has been delicious as well. The Gordita, awesome. The cheese enchiladas suizas were really delicious, it tastes like they chop up pablano peppers and put them inside with the cheese, so flavorful. The chips that come on the table are pretty alright, however the hot sauce they give you to put on them is really great, it tastes slightly of barbecue and hot sauce together but in more of a watery Mexican style. We have been there a couple times and had the 3 steak taco dinner and orchata. The steak is tender and flavorful! The taco dinner tasted great!! The portions are large and the price is cheap at just $5.99!! The orchata tasted great too. I've had orchata at many places and this is definitely one of the best tasting. The restaurant itself is nothing fancy but the staff is friendly and food comes out fast. Highly recommend for great tasting Mexican food!! All of them are so delicious and the spicy ones have such good flavor too. I loved it so much I came back today for some of their delicious Pozole. Omg.... I loved every bit of it. This lively 24 hour dump has the best gorditas. One Sunday late morning my wife and I were eating and somehow struck up a conversation with the folks at the table next to us. They were mexican transplants and I think one of their kids caught our eye. We love kids..... Anyway, they said, hey, you have to try a gordita here, it's what they do. And, they proceeded to give us one from their order, and I've been hooked ever since. They also have excellent home pickled peppers and carrots, excellent smokey salsa roja, and the chips served with salsa cruda are always good, too. They'll bring lime wedges on request. My favorite order is for two gorditas - one carne asada and the other al pastor. The standard fare of giant burritos, fresh corn tacos, flautas, etc will be sure to please. Of course you also get chips, salsa, peppers.... excellent! I've watched this location go through many changes over the years, and this owner has the right idea... in fact writing this convinced me to go tonight! I recently saw this restaurant reviewed in the Chicago Tribune as the best in Elgin where Mexican food abounds. Since I visit my son once a month in Elgin I called them to pinpoint their address. In spite of knowing perfect Spanish my countrymen - as usual - did not have the faintest idea on how I could find Tacos La Flor. They did not even know they were featured in the Chicago Tribune nor seemed to care. Elgin has always been known nationwide as the worst designed city in the entire U.S. Mapquest has the area totally wrong insofar as routing. Good luck to a great chauffer and if someone herein can give me a decent routing to La Flor starting at route 20 and State....Tacos are on me!! read more
