I've been going to this LA Fitness for about a year and a half, and the quality is inconsistent. The weight rack is always disorganized, the gym sometimes smells, and equipment is occasionally broken. The front desk staff can be hit or miss--sometimes they're helpful, other times unresponsive. It's probably the most affordable gym in the area, but also likely the worst LA Fitness within a 20-mile radius. I've been to four others nearby, and this one falls short in comparison. read more

Sitting in the locker room while I just got my 3 day pass, unsure if I want to stay or not. Customer service here is weird... no greeting, just asking if I was a member when I walked over to my relative, waiting for me on the side. When I was with the sales representative, I asked if they needed my ID. He didn't answer. Later, he mentioned I had to take a picture for the pass. I asked him "why" and he didn't answer. He just pointed the camera towards me and took the pic despite me really giving any type of consent and still no explanation as to why (which I'm sure is for legal purposes of course. Still weird how he literally said nothing despite him being a "representative"). I know it's a gym and all, but isn't customer service kind of what brings more memberships here besides the equipment here itself? Why would someone want to feel inclined in returning to a place if no questions are answered and staff don't seem to enjoy themselves here or the members/potential new members? I was also lied here from the front desk guy when I asked who was the manager, and he told me this one guy at his desk. When I went over to the manager, I was informed, he was indeed not a manager. I ended up leaving. Why did I get a call and a voicemail from a "Kyle" and when I called back, I was told "Kyle no longer works here". Today, in the men's shower room, there was no shampoo in any of the 6 showers. This is the second time there has been no shampoo in the men's shower room. Also, there are no paper towels on the second floor. Every morning, someone from LA Fitness should make sure the shampoo dispensers and the paper towel dispensers are stocked. Please don't try to skimp on these important things, while still charging members the same or higher rates or you will lose customers. read more

At this location rules are not enforced unless you are skinny, short, fat or old, then the staff will come running to tell you that you misplaced the equipment or didn't clean the machine properly. If you are a muscle intimidating guy you can do whatever you want. These photos are a clear example, one guy holds up to 6 machines, leaving his dirty towels on each one. I've complained twice already to no avail. Seriously I get herrased by the staff because I misplaced a dumbbell while they just watch idlely while the intimidating big guys go around doing as they please. Incompetent staff who bully (if it can be called that) those who are just starting his journey in weightlifting while they leave alone anyone who could punch them back. Been a member of this gym for years, but it has gotten so bad. One of the main reasons why I've stayed is because of my workout team and the cycle instructors/classes. Other than that, this place is quite a dump! The staff are not helpful at all. Weights are hardly re-racked. They also let people lift weights in the cycle room in the evenings, so when we come to cycle in the mornings, the bikes are all messed up. The gym is rarely clean. They are always running out of cleaning wipes. The floors have dents in them, and the biggest issue recently is the mice and theft. There is construction across the street, so naturally it will bring out mice, but they have found solace in the gym. Also, there have been 2 incidents of theft in the mornings. The hot tub has been broke since April 2024. We have asked multiple times about when it would be fixed and no one seems to know the answer. Both water fountains upstairs are not working, and when I asked when they would be fixed, the staff didn't even know one wasn't working. SMH. No one walks around to check on the gym and to ensure equipment is working. The staff just sit up front and are on their phones constantly! I've heard many people state they are leaving for Gold's when they open and honestly, I can't blame them. Recently started going to this gym to get into shape!! This gym is like your typical commercial gym. What I like about it is that everyone is kept to themselves and there to workout!! Staff is really helpful, every time I've went I've been greeted with a smile!! The gym itself could use some remodeling, but the bathrooms are nice has an amazing variety of cardio equipment and weightlifting equipment. I rarely give negative Yelp reviews. But I can't stand by and not review this gym. I have been a member of LA Fitness for several years now. Admittedly, I'm wasting my money because I hadn't been going especially due to Covid and....life. Nevertheless, I recently starting going back in May 2022 as I signed up with the British Swim School to do small group swim lessons. This facility is in horrible shape and has poor management. The pool is actually a saving grace. However, you cant enjoy it as much as you would like because of all the other things wrong with this facility. The locker room is disgusting! I literally have come in first thing in the morning and it is clear that the entire locker room hasn't been cleaned. The toilets are never flushed and several times i have witness women's underwear and clothing just laying in the floor of the the locker area and showers. DISGUSTING. I'm not sure if this is a reflection solely on LA Fitness or female members - either way DISGUSTING. Again, the pool itself is great. There are 4 lanes and its clean. BUT, the deck is often not clean. I have watched for weeks now hair clogged in the drain by the pool showers. DISGUSTING. The hot tub is DISGUESTING. There is sitting dirt at the bottom of it. I wouldn't dare my own enemy to get in it. Then lets talk about the inconsistencies of this gym. Often there is something wrong with the pool. It isn't open because something is wrong with it chemically, there is flooding at the club...all types of issues. The final straw for me is that the British Swim School (which is independent from LA Fitness) has now canceled all class at this location and will no longer be training here because of the repeated issues as of late. This includes the fact that for several weeks in a row the gym isn't opened on time on the weekends. Literally, on the morning of Sunday, June 26th at least 50 members waited for 1 hour for someone to open the gym. My swim class was scheduled for 9:15 am. The gym is suppose to open at 8 am. It literally didnt open until 9:05. By that point the swim school had canceled the class. Mind you this scenario happened the week prior too. At this point, I'm pissed at this gym because my lessons with British Swim School are paused and I loved the instructors and Im no longer going to continue to just give my money to this gym as a General Member. I'm canceling my membership and joining the new gym that just opened in Ft. Totten. Who knows how the management will be there but one thing for sure is that is brand new so it will be clean. read more

I must caution prospective gym-goers in downtown Silver Spring, MD about the deplorable conditions and poor management at LA Fitness (8616 Cameron St). As a member since it opened in 2007, I share recent experiences (see pix for evidence): 1. Uncleanliness and Neglect: Shockingly poor hygiene including scum around the jacuzzi. 2. Constant Lack of Maintenance and Broken Equipment: Disrepair compromises safety. 3. Mismanagement and Communication Failures: Frequent pool closures without notice, misleading information, and mostly excuses from the "management" staff. 4. Safety Hazards: Recently there were exposed nails in the hallway to the pool from construction equipment which posed severe safety risks, especially for people with mobility issues and children. 5. Pool Chemical Imbalance: Cloudy water and dangerous pool chemical imbalances are the norm not the exception, posing health hazards. As a resident near LA Fitness, I find it appalling. With the Montgomery County Silver Spring Aquatic Center opening nearby, I suggest it as an alternative since the County prioritizes cleanliness, safety, and effective management (http://tinyurl.com/SSAquaticCenter). I strongly advise against becoming a member at LA Fitness, downtown Silver Spring, MD. The gym sucks: none of the 3 filter water machines is working. Sauna fails half of the time.

My first (bad) impression was asking the front desk employee how to use a stair machine. She said she didn't know and said she'd find an instructor who might be able to help me. Unfortunately he didn't know how to use the machine either. Fortunately I eventually figured it out on my own. Other impressions: Right after joining I received a call from a gym employee asking whether I knew about all the services the gym provided (I didn't but would be happy to hear about them). I couldn't talk at the time but asked him to call me back. I never received a call. The gym is not kept cool and there seems to be very little AC if any. If you're wearing sweatpants you can get very hot in there. I've seen several people walk past the front desk and not scan a membership card. I was told by another member that the gym allows homeless people to use their showers. The locker room offers no towels (a basic necessity in a gym that provides showers) so members need to bring their own. Recently lockers have been broken into, locks cut off, and members' things have been rifled through and stolen. Employees? Homeless non-members? Generally, employees seem bored and unenthusiastic. Most are looking into their cell phones and barely look up to acknowledge members. read more

THIRD WORLD STAY AWAY - I am reviewing everything in this gym and Wheaton location minus the physical trainers. PARKING - Some street parking but at night be careful, especially the parking garage. GYM - Pretty much 30% of the machines are broken or not operating. GYM PATRONS - Looks like they let anyone in - especially teenagers. Many bring tons of friends in and there is no gym dress code. Any where from "wife beaters", flip flops, and work boots. Busy times , they hang around and take up a lot of space and dont work out. GYM ETIQUETTE - There is none. Think "MARSHALLS/TJ MAXX on steroids. Everything is thrown everywhere. POOL - The lone positive. It is a nice pool with lane lines BUUUUT LOCKERROOM - Disgusting. Picture Chewbacca and all his wookie friends have a field day across the sinks, urinals, and toilets. Don't believe me look at photos. STAFF - Can't speak for them, but it appears they don't care because they allow the place to be that way with broken equipment, countless non-members entering, and overall cleanliness of place. Most of the reviews are correct regarding 2022 (if you read them all) except for the one guy that works for the gym. Always trust the straight shooter!!! New manager lady is really nice and has fixed some basic things around the place, like turning what was a kids area (long unused) into a Dojo. And fixing a hot tub that was broken for years(!). What hasn't been fixed are a lot of the cardio vascular equipment. The huge waste of space on the entry level of staff desks, which are rarely full. Locker room consistently has trash in it, and really just needs a remodel as sinks and urinals show lots of rust. And geez, why doesn't the weekend staff know how to change tv channels? Still bringing in money for corporate because of the lack of options in downtown silver spring. But geez, this place is just ok. read more

I like this La fitness due to the location in downtown Silver Spring. The only thing I don't like is that it does not offer parking or parking reimbursements. It's $1 an hour at the garage next door, but you can park for free before 7 am and after 7 pm. I usually go before 7 am and the weekends are free so I only go when it's free. I refuse to pay extra for a workout. It has two floors with a basketball court and group classes so you can get a well-rounded work out experience. I spend most of my time at the location in Laurel because of the parking situation. This location has great windows from the top floor to look out into the city and several fast-casual and regular restaurants within walking distance. I love the all set seafood restaurant across the street and I have had to walk 25 yards to the jimmy johns when my stomach started growling while on the squat rack. That was a life saver! I use the pool and they seem to have a spin room and a training area. Overall it is a good la fitness! read more

I recently moved to Silver Spring and just joined this gym during COVID phase 2. I'm highly disappointed in the lack of sanitization used on the equipment. They have 2 tables w/about 4-5 spray bottles of sanitizer. Customers take those bottles with them while working out instead of returning for others to use. This means out of 20 people workout out, only 5 are wiping their equipment down. Gym staff doesn't seem to monitor this at all. Instead of the cleaners/staff walking around randomly wiping equipment down, they are just sweeping the floors and leaving the equipment clean up to the customers. GOOD LUCK finding a single dumbbell under 35lbs! The weights are sporadically placed all over the rack and there are a ton of missing weights. THE PLUS SIDE: the gym is in a great location & the staff working the front counter are very friendly! I used a guest pass to work out here and everything went fine the first day. The website advertised the guest pass as a 3 day pass, so I figured the guest pass would still be active on the 3rd day of using it. Lo and behold, I arrive at the gym today (it was activated Saturday and today is Monday) only to be informed that the pass had expired. I figured it wouldn't be a problem - surely, they'd still let me have a complimentary workout given the confusion of their pass being advertised as a 3 day pass, yet only being a 2 day pass. However, a member of the sales team said there was nothing they could do, and, rather, attempted to get me to sign up for a membership or pay $20 to work out for the day. Realistically, they could have made an exception and let me work out that day, but, instead, they tried to coax me into purchasing a membership. I drove 30 minutes to get to this gym during rush hour, and paid for parking too only to have to leave immediately given the staff's unwillingness to honor the three days advertised on their website. This is a pretty sleazy tactic by the sales staff. They would have gone a lot further with me if they had just been cool about it and let me get a lift in. Instead, this just ended up being a big waste of time and money. I've worked out at many gyms before, and they were never this uptight about their guest passes because it leaves a bad taste in someone's mouth when you're this stringent about a complimentary workout. The pushy sales tactics at commercial gyms are becoming a nuisance. Let the equipment and environment sell itself when someone has taken the initiative to actually visit your gym. Apart from my awful experience with the guest pass, the gym itself leaves much to be desired. The dumbbells are completely disorganized like every LA Fitness I've ever been to. The equipment is pretty mediocre - not many cable machines nor squat racks. The gym culture here seems pretty much non-existent. There are definitely better options in the area if you're looking to work out at a commercial gym. Personally, I would recommend Gold's or Onelife. I am a LA fitness multi city member. So I often try out different LA fitness gyms. It's a decent gym compared to the one at Crystal city. I went there to play basketball and swim. Basketball court was smaller than the usual courts. It was extremely packed so I am glad I got a quick game. Unfortunately, we lost so I ended up going to the pool area rather than sitting there and wait for the next game. I was extremely disappointed by the pool area. It smelled like they add a lot of chlorine. The spa was smaller than usual. Half my upper body was outside the spa even though I am an average height person. The pool area was dark. Not a great look. I would like it to be more lit. They also British Swim lessons there. So one of the lanes was occupied by the kids who were enrolled for swim lessons. I would stick to the one at the crystal city and Owings Mills for now. read more

This was my first experience with LA fitness and it did not impress me. Came to workout while visiting my sister (LA fitness is also close to me in KY). The man at the front desk was nice and helpful but the sales representative who activated my guest pass was borderline rude. He acted like he did not want to be bothered. My sister froze her account due to COVID-19 and came back to test it out based on the email she received from LA Fitness advising she could come try out the gym before unfreezing her account and see for herself. He acted like he had no clue what she was talking about and asked to see the email. When she took too long he said you guys can go test it out. She had another question and I needed my guest pass activated. He was unable to help her with the questions and advised she should call corporate. So she asked for the phone number and he told her to get it from the front desk. He then activated my guest pass. I did not get a tour of the gym or any explanation on the COVID rules. I had to ask about wearing a mask the full time and where to get sanitizer to wipe the machines. As far as the gym, it has all the basic equipment. Plenty of machines to use even with social distancing. It would be nice if they had more sanitizing stations. I had no problems getting on an elliptical and working out for 50 minutes. read more

Well, I was really excited for this gym to open when I joined during pre-construction in October 2005. I know people who are members in San Diego and love it. The gym did not open as scheduled, no big surprise there. I went to the Grand Opening in April and it is just O.K. I was immediately approached by one of the personal trainers that contracts out of the gym (not LA Fitness employees). I really wanted to experience the gym without the used car high sales pitch. I've been several times since and it is not very crowded yet. I am disappointed that they don't offer any yoga classes and that they don't have paper towels nearby the weight machines to wipes off the (ew!) sweat from others. As far as gyms go, it has the basics that you need to get a good workout and a basketball court and pool. Now if they would only add the juice bar they promised... I signed up for a membership at LA Fitness in Silver Spring on Monday, and a few hours later, I received a call from Pablo Martinez to schedule my complimentary fitness assessment. I met Pablo today, December 4th, for that the assessment. After gathering my initial information we began the assessment. Pablo was friendly the entire time, despite the difficulties I had -- I have a lot I need to work on. After the assessment we returned to the desk where Pablo showed me the pricing for personal training. Even the lowest tier of training is too expensive for me right now. As I attempt to explain this to Pablo, he pushes back but becomes very rude. His entire demeanor changed once I made it clear that I am not signing up for a training package. Pablo essentially threw his hands up, turned away from me, and began typing on his computer, with his last words to me being "whatever, bye." I get that there's a sales component to his job, but his attitude upon me declining the sale was the most unprofessional behavior I've ever experienced. I've never seen a grown man turn into a tantrum throwing child like that, EVER. Let's be clear about a few things: you are NOT required to purchase a personal training package to be a member at LA Fitness, and not having a personal trainer does not mean you will not achieve your fitness goals. What Pablo did ruined the chances of me even considering purchasing a training package in the future when I can afford it. He also made a complete ass of himself. read more

I actually used to work out at the planet fitness around the corner, but I switched over to LA fitness, because of how well they keep this gym. It has a pool, sauna, basketball court, and all the amenities that you could possibly need. All for an affordable price a month too. I started going to this gym when it first open and it has continued to decline since that day. the staff is horrible the trainers are just as bad because they are rude. the men gym locker room tends to be very nasty, unless when the new person they have cleaning is on duty. weight room area is usually covered in weight just left on the floor by the prior user. the staff doesn't come around to put the weight back or just tell people to re-rack the weights. the equipment tends to be broken for week to months!! the cardio equipment is not well maintained and needs replacing. but, here is what just awful about the place. i get that people can work up a sweat but, there are two people in that gym that are an exception to the rule. the odor they give off is absolutely, ridiculous when they are on the stair masters machine or just working out in general. their odor permeate through out the gym cardio area. i told the front desk employee because imagine having potential members come in and smell them!! it is awful. they either needs to be told or the gym should take some sort of measures to control the smell in the area. overall, if there was another gym closer i would say go there. i am just hopeful the golds gym finally open soon. read more

Hello, I have tried to cancel my membership to LA fitness for the last four months to no avail. The online portal will not me log on or create a new password or username. I have e-mailed and called, and still no response. My membership was supposed to run from February-August. Due to the pandemic, my location was closed/unsafe from March-June. The Silver Spring location has been extremely dirty and lacking in sanitation pre-COVID, and felt unsafe returning. In June, I went in person to my location asking for it to be canceled and told that it would be - and SINCE THEN I've been charged for FIVE additional months. I not only request a cancellation of my account - I would like a refund for my five payments of a service that I did not use due to it being unsafe because of the pandemic. As a member of LA Fitness in my hometown, I visited here on my recent trip to DC to keep up my routine. I was pleased to find out that I have an "all access" membership and didn't have to pay an additional fee to work out here. The location is considerably smaller than others I've been too, but given the congestion of the Capital Region in general, I wasn't really surprised. The girl at the desk was rather friendly, but the other employees were a little rude when I came in. The changing area is much bigger and more modern when compared to others I've been to, but the sauna was the same size, and I felt overwhelmed by the number of people in it when I stopped by. The equipment is in generally good condition, though somewhat cramped together in my opinion. I was able to find almost the same machines and equipment as back home as well and got my workout in without skipping anything. Overall, it wouldn't rank, high on my list of LA locations, but it served its purpose for me while on a business trip. read more

I decided I wanted to take my fitness to the next level and get a personal trainer. It was probably the biggest financial mistake I've made in the past three years. I've developed constant nausea and vertigo, which makes exercise impossible. It makes leaving the house at all difficult. In order to get out of the personal training contract I need a original copy of a signed note confirming a diagnosis, delivered by hand. Well, I've seen three specialists and I'm no closer to a diagnosis. I still feel sick all the time. I can barely spend time in a moving vehicle without vomiting at least once. And LA Fitness continues to empty my wallet. I've decided to cancel my membership altogether. What an awful experience. read more

This is one of the worst customer care location so far. I was in Rockville and Chicago L A Fitness with more efficient time management and better customer care. Today I have a personal training appointment at 6 pm and that has been scheduled by designated person from the facility on Monday. I do work in Johns Hopkins University as researcher ; so I have to start early today to come back in Silver Spring by 6 pm. So, exactly at 6 pm , the lady at the check in desk told me to wait as my personal trainer will be with me soon. After 15 minutes I checked with the guy in the check in desk and he replied that he can see the person with whom I have appointment and he will be with me shortly . He also told that the trainer is with a client. 6:22 pm: the manager came and told me that the person with whom I have an appointment has quit the job and that's why they are unable to do the session. 6:23 pm: Another trainer came and very disrespectfully asked me if I would have rescheduled this time . I said " No"... then they both reluctantly told me " sorry.. it happens.. let's reschedule it". They also suggested me to do some warmup or class an they will find someone . My class was at 7 and I said any of you ( both of them were free that time) can just do a 20 minutes session as coming another time would be impossible for me in near future. They were very reluctant to address the situation and I end up with no rescheduling as by that time I understood that they are making things up every moment. The whole experience went very bad. Sharing an email I just sent to LA Fitness Management this morning. If you are a woman, don't go to this gym. If you are an intelligent man, don't go to this gym. "I would like to share an incident that just happened. I am in the middle of my workout in the trainer area (I have a trainer) and there is a man in the space with me walking around a lot and doing less than the bare minimum of workout. He then sits down behind me and puts his phone up like he is taking a picture. He does it a few times in my direction. I stop my workout and confront him. First he says he didn't take any pictures and then when I insist, he shows me a picture still on his phone of the TRX equiptment that was right next to me.  I asked him to delete the picture and any other pictures he took of me or anything near me. He refuses and insists he didn't take any other pictures. I go to the front desk to complain and one of the trainers comes back and begins talking to him. I had to take myself out of the conversation because I was getting upset because the man insisted he didn't take any pictures.  I continued my workout and the trainer continued his discussion with the man. The discussion went on for some time and it actually seemed like the trainer was talking to him about his workout routine. Lots of smiling and laughing.  Not another word was said to me. My understanding is you don't take pictures in the gym. These guys seemed to have a really pleasant conversation after I made the complaint. I was made to feel like a fool and extraordinarily uncomfortable with somebody sitting behind me taking pictures while I worked out. The trainer now has a new client. He was signing the papers as I left. Oh.. And I got the "calm down ma'am" from the trainer. read more

Most people join a gym for New Years; I had to quit because the conditions here are so bad. That's not to say LA Fitness, in general, is of low quality. In fact, I've greatly valued my long-standing membership with LA Fitness when I was using other locations. This location seems like its being left to die, and then to hold a fire sale. At one point this winter, 3 out of 4 bikes were out of order. The carpet is in shambles. The stairwell currently has 3 steps missing carpet due to wear or rot. At this moment, the rotating door up front was shattered and out of order. The weight machines are OLD--many are showing visible rust--and the free weights are everywhere, in no discernible order. Some of the ellipticals are not true and straight, and watching people use them, crookedly, pains me. The water fountains are room temp, or, at random times, out-of-order. The pool is out-of-order at the moment. They have a lot of staff, yet are understaffed: I've never seen anyone in the free weights area even attempting to care for the space. Usually there's no one scanning me in: they just setup the scanner and disappear. No one's ever said a word to me on the way out (not that I want to talk to them). It's too bad. On Saturday, 1/29/22, I went to the Silver Spring LA Fitness for a swim at opening - 8AM. Upon getting there at 8 AM, the place was still closed. As I got into a very long line on a very chilly morning, I found out that the employee didn't have a key to get it. Really?!!!!I. Who manages this gym, where the employee does not have a key to get it and open the place up???? It was freezing and at about 8:20 AM I left and went to the Wheaton site to swim and this place in regards to the locker room and showers is a joke and disaster. Today (2/19/22), I went to the Silver Spring site again at opening to swim - 8AM. After changing and walking over to the pool, the glass door to get into the pool area was locked. After a few phone calls, a staffer finally opened up the door at about 8:20 AM. What is it with this place when it comes to opening up on time????? Don't bother getting a membership. I'll be turning mine in soon. LA Fitness has gone down hill and they don't care about you once they get your name on the contract. By the way, another swimmer there told me that the County Health Department had just closed the pool for about a week after someone complained. If true, it's another example of LA Fitness not caring about the health of their gym members. read more

Avoid this gym and it's rude and unprofessional staff. I was a member two or three years ago. I left because of the basketball court and the culture. Two days ago a manager promoting the membership on the street gave me a week pass to re-evaluate the gym and give it another chance. Since this gym has been emailing me weekly to rejoin and since he was so nice I figured I would stop by to see if things had improved. When I walked in today, the membership person took my information and said I couldn't use my pass "since I had been there before". Mind you, I haven't been a member in three years and explained that I was a former member person who gave me the pass. When I explained this to the manager, He said "this is not a free loader pass". Keep in mind, I have a membership at another gym and was there to see if I could be convinced to switch gyms. Also, how dare this jerk imply that I'm a freeloader when I had given this gym 30 a month for over a year? I highly recommend that you avoid this gym. Wsc and planet fitness are better options a block away. read more
