This is my second review since attending Lighthouse back in September. The growth I have seen within myself since attending is nothing I have ever experienced. For the last 10 years I have been studying my own psychology and using Cognitive Behavioral Therapies to overcome the narcissistic abuse from my childhood home. Although understanding my circumstances has helped me overcome a lot, the growth that I have come into since joining this studio does not compare. Over the last 3 months I have stopped coping with my pain with the use of Marijuana. Through the intentional movement, breath work, and meditation on a regular basis I am now able to see my own projections and even those of others which has allowed to engage with the relationships in my life differently, more productively. I have also stopped disassociating in intimacy something I did not realize I was doing from being a victim of sexual assault and rape. This place has taught me how to come back to my body and be present in my life without bringing my past back into my present. I cannot say enough of how eternally grateful I am for this place that has become a community of support and guidance. Thank you to all the instructors who brought light back into my life. Even my trajectory of my current career path is changing. Manju Sadarangani, Kate Judson, Jenna Tomasello, Jen Skillicorn, Ametisse Gover-Chamiou, Alicia McBride, Meredith McCullough, Colleen Brisport Sequeda, and of course Rebecca Henry only to name a few you have all taught me more about my alignment, my breathing, my mind more than you know. You are not just teachers, you are angels and gifts and I do not take you for granted. Thank you all for what you do for our community to help make this world a better place. This place is one of recovery and peace in my soul. I can honestly say, I have finally reach a place of contentment and deep connection with myself which is leading to deeper connections with others. I was a member of Lighthouse Yoga (LH) for over 9 years. In that time, I found healing in classes taught by Nandi, Leshone, Patrick (Kundalini Yoga-KY), Machelle (Yin), and Tara (Hatha). Unfortunately, I made the difficult decision to leave after experiencing sustained harm at the hands of three individuals: Rebecca (studio owner since Summer 2021), Manju (KY teacher since Winter 2020), and Andy (member since Sept 2023). On September 1, 2024, I clearly set boundaries with Andy after a pattern of unwanted and uncomfortable behavior. Despite this, he continued to harass and intimidate me--hovering near me, speaking to me after months of no contact, and creating a space of psychological intimidation. When I addressed this in a January 6, 2025 email to him, he deflected accountability and triangulated the message to Rebecca and Manju. Shockingly, both women protected him and invalidated my experience. It was only on Feb 6, I found out Manju's true feelings towards me. On January 8, Rebecca told me my boundaries were "unreasonable," blamed me for her involvement in this matter, and excused Andy's behavior by suggesting that "a new year" might have confused him. Her response gaslit and minimized my safety concerns while prioritizing studio politics. She spiritual-bypassed the situation, asking me to give him grace rather than acknowledging the trauma of being repeatedly violated in a supposed sanctuary. On February 2, at the end of a sound bath facilitated by Manju, the lights were low with only a few candles flickering on the floor. As I was speaking directly to Manju, I suddenly felt a subtle surge of energy along the back of my right ribs. When I turned, I saw Andy standing just 3 feet behind me, near my right arm. His silent presence felt intrusive and deeply unsettling. I immediately moved away. On Feb 5, I shared my concerns with Manju in a respectful voice message, requesting only that she look out for me if she noticed something inappropriate. She responded with openness... until 3 a.m. on February 6, when I received cruel & abusive texts from her echoing defamatory statements that Andy had weaponized against me. This confirmed a chilling truth: Manju had never been neutral. She had harbored resentment & bitterness for a long time under the mask of neutrality and turned on me when I needed support. To her, I was creating drama. I was devastated. Manju, who teaches trauma-informed classes, weaponized her proximity and influence while dehumanizing me as a paying student and person. After trusting her for four years, the betrayal cut deeply. I wondered how long she was infecting my practice. On March 1, during a KY immersion, Rebecca misrepresented a falsehood--claiming "as the studio owner, in my opinion, Hatha yoga is Kundalini yoga." An opinion doesn't need power-laden titles to be valid. That same day, I witnessed Manju speak about teacher-student ethics without once acknowledging the inherent power imbalance or the teacher's responsibility to hold and protect boundaries. Instead, she blamed students for feeling entitled or invasive--distorting the dynamic entirely. Lighthouse Yoga became unrecognizable--a toxic, unsafe space. A place where boundaries are erased, victims are dismissed, and the leadership enables harm. When I needed Rebecca and Manju most--two women, mothers of daughters, and elders--they failed me. What they demonstrated was not spiritual leadership but control, gaslighting, and transactional values. I gave this studio my loyalty, energy, presence, warmth, and money. In return, I was discarded like trash. To them, I was not a person--just a resource. This place now feels cult-like: you conform or you're cast out. Safety and protection are not rights--they're selectively granted by those in power. I chose to leave on my own terms when I remembered I am worthy of both. To future victims: I am not the first, and I won't be the last. I've left evidence with trusted community members. If a civil action is ever filed against Rebecca for negligence, know this: she chose to keep and protect a known predator at her studio. That is on record. The studio's decline speaks for itself. I was so happy to find a small, independent yoga studio in my neighborhood to join and even more delighted after I started going to classes. As soon as you enter, it's obvious it's a nice studio with a welcoming vibe--the class instructor checks you in, and there's free tea and animal crackers to take while you get settled in and hang up your coat. There's a free lending library in the lobby, too. They don't charge for using their mats and props which was a pleasant surprise. And the classes themselves are great! A well-rounded practice and not over-crowded with attendees. They have a wide variety of class options (yin, Hatha, kundalini, pre-natal) as well as multi-week workshops and events. They offer classes both in person and live online. For a little studio they have a lot to offer! It's not the cheapest yoga spot in DC, and there are only about 5 classes per day, but it's been a great experience so far. I teach at this studio (awesome, clean space with very calm vibes) and have first hand knowledge about the quality of the offerings as well as the administration. There are various styles of yoga here, something to fit everyone's yoga style: hatha , flow, kundalini, restorative and the teachers are well trained and most excellent. Also, check out their workshops! The owner is friendly, kind and teaches a fun Saturday am flow as well as prenatal. I've been attending classes since June 2018, and really love the variety of classes from the Kundalini classes (this is the only studio in the DC metro area that focuses on a strong Kundalini program) to the variety of Hatha and Vinyasa classes. Lighthouse did an amazing job adapting fast and well to the pandemic. I would try to make an evening class at lighthouse after work and fail miserably. Now I just log on. And if I miss it, I practice with a replay, because lighthouse offers those. I am no longer self conscious about what I can and can't do, because no one can see me. The lighthouse teachers use zoom to do more than demonstrate asanas, they give you gentle feedback. The sense of community that lighthouse has continued to create with their online class is such a blessing during this unprecedented time. Lighthouse has kept it fresh. Kundalini in general, you rarely repeat a practice. But the teachers have worked as a team to keep things creative. We had yoga bingo. Then we had that amazing chakra series. Then we had the 21 day challenge. Several iterations of 40-day morning meditation. Newer classes. Kudos Lighthouse!! read more

This is an excellent yoga studio. It's warm and welcoming; not competitive at all. The studio owner has worked hard to foster a sense of community, and this is apparent in each of the classes that I've attended. I've taken classes from almost all the teachers - they are all very different and have their own style and strengths. The studio is small enough that there is lots of individual attention/instruction from the teachers. The studio doesn't have all the fancy stuff that some of the higher end (and more expensive) studios have. The studio is more concerned with high quality instruction. If you do Kundalini yoga, this is absolutely the place to go. Every single instructor is top notch. There are no bad teachers at Lighthouse, and no bad yoga classes. I don't think that can be said for another yoga studio in the city. Finally, you can't beat the price. The studio owner is committed to making yoga accessible to everyone. read more

I took my first class here last night and was thrilled to find such a gem in the neighborhood. Having just had a baby and not taken a yoga class in years before that, I came in rusty and self conscious. That feeling quickly dissipated as everyone was friendly and non-judgemental. People introduced themselves and chatted before class and was a mix of all age and ability levels. This studio really felt like a community and I had a great class! It is small and no frills but has everything you need. I can only speak to one class so far but the instructor took the time to talk to everyone before class, learn about challenges or injuries, and was able to show his personality throughout the hour. He explained everything we were supposed to do very well and ahead of time and made adjustments respectfully and quietly. I have already signed up for my next class. read more

Lighthouse Yoga is an absolute gem. Having practiced yoga at other studios in DC, I've never experienced the sense of community, diversity, and inclusivity that Lighthouse offers. All of the teachers are welcoming and strive to help you make the most of your practice with an understanding of individual needs and concerns. The "judginess" and competition I've seen elsewhere just doesn't exist here, and classes are full of all shapes, sizes, ages, and levels of practice. I'm visiting from out of town, and I was looking for a place to continue my Kundalini yoga practice. I found Lighthouse Yoga in Petworth, and it's a gem! I'd highly recommend checking it out whether you're a regular practitioner or new to Kundalini. The studio is very warm & bright, and the owner Julie is very welcoming. She has a beautiful presence and attunement, which she brings to the studio and classes. The classes are 1 1/2 hrs and are both active & meditative, encouraging you to go within as you hold the poses and as you tap into your energy, allowing you to begin reflecting & emanating your energy outward. Very beautiful. While Kundalini is not as commonly practiced as other types of yoga, if you haven't tried it, I definitely recommend checking out a class at Lighthouse. You may be surprised by how you feel both during & after the class. They also have other classes like Hatha and Pilates, as well as a very friendly community! read more

Starting out with four stars. Will update as I take more classes. First, this is one of the only studios in town that doesn't have some version of flow for every class. After Unity Woods closed, there's no studio for Iyengar left. Bonus for me that it's actually in my neighborhood. Also, the classes are a little cheaper than most studios which is also nice. I took level 1-2 with Emily. The class was good. I prefer classes without music or chanting, so I deduct a star for that. Emily let me know there is a more alignment focused teacher. The students and teacher were friendly. I don't like classes where everyone takes it very seriously and gets into poses before the class even starts. This was pretty relaxed. read more

Dedicated staff and a warm positive atmosphere distinguish this outstanding yoga studio. They offer Kundalini yoga as well as yoga for pregnant women and families. Lighthouse Yoga does not have all the exterior decorations often seen in yoga studios; these are not necessary as they shine with a inner light. read more

Lighthouse Yoga Center is my yoga home! I love the new studio which is bright and welcoming and very convenient to many neighborhood amenities, like a post-class supper. The owner is friendly and the staff is great and helpful. I take many of the Hatha style classes at Lighthouse. Their master teacher, Naomi Gottleib-Miller is an amazing instructor. I'm learning so much from her about proper alignment and am inspired by her sense of humor when we are in difficult poses. Erika Bolstad teaches interesting classes that are really about meditation through movement. And Shauna Dillavou's classes let you really work into poses through extended holds, but with a sense of play. Great place that I am so happy to have in the community! read more

I've been coming here for a little over a year, and here's what I LOVE about this place: -you will never be judged in any way for your ability, your knowledge, if your tummy grumbles during savasana or if you show up looking like a total hungover mess -classes are challenging, encouraging and fun, but teachers always offer modifications and never push you -authentic community atmosphere -small class sizes -kindness and flexibility of the staff, good natured and fun personalities -variety of workshops (inversions, back bends, restorative) and guest teachers If you're new to yoga or just a bit rusty, I highly recommend the Fundamentals series (I took it with Naomi). It's exceptionally well taught and sets you up for sustainable practice. I haven't taken a class here with a teacher that I didn't end up loving, which I can't say for a lot of other studios I've tried in the area. The class packages are a good value, and even though they have expiration dates you can roll old credits into new ones so you don't lose any. LYC is the cream of the DC yoga crop in my humble opinion! :) read more

I am so glad I moved to this neighborhood and discovered Lighthouse. I previously lived in Shaw and Mount Pleasant and practiced at other studios, but none had the neighborhood vibe and personal touch that I found at Lighthouse. I'm a fan of the mixed-level hatha and restorative classes, but there are also many people who attend the Kundalini classes. The teachers are all approachable and help you learn the poses but also simply enjoy the class. My love for yoga has grown exponentially since I started visiting this studio! I've been taking classes here for almost exactly two years now, since they were up the street about 10 blocks. From the first time I walked in, knowing nothing about yoga except that I wanted to try it, this studio has been great. The instructors are all very understanding and helpful (I've got physical issues that can make some of the moves difficult for me.) The classes are small and personal, and since the move, it's close enough to me for it to be an easy walk. It's also fabulous to have classes with my neighbors - they get a really good cross-section of the neighborhood and folks from around the city. Hope to see you in class! read more

I have been a little turned off by yoga lately. So many places are crowded and trendy. A friend suggested I try Lighthouse. Best yoga class I've ever attended. It was obvious that the instructor, Julie, is very knowledgeable and experienced. The class size was small and inclusive. Julie gave individualized attention to everyone, and varying levels of challenge. I've been around the yoga scene for a long time, and I have to say, this is one of the best studios I've trained at in a long time. The instructors are phenomenal, the space is convenient to the metro, and it feels more like a community space than a boutique yoga studio. As soon as you walk in the door you feel welcomed. The instructors all make it a point to come up to you, inquire about what your needs are, and are mindful to push, but also offer modifications where necessary. I had the chance to take unlimited classes over the past week, and I can truly say that I loved every single class they offer. The classes are intimate and the instructors to a great job of making sure everyone gets attention. This is a great studio for everyone from beginners to advanced practitioners. I've had the opportunity to watch this studio grow from its previous location to the one they are currently in, and its beautiful to see such a wonderful community space.
