Super cute restaurant. Feels very cozy. Got the chicken curry crepe and it was salty! If I wasn't with people, I might have complained but it was borderline fine. So...not sure the food is good. I just happen to think the attitude is a little worse. Came with a group and someone in our party ordered the French Onion Soup and then a Croque Monsieur. No one else in our group ordered a starter. What's weird is for some reason they decided to course the soup with everyone's mains. Normal restaurants, including like....your local suburban Chile's, know not to do that but this place thought that was normal. So already, my friend is a course behind everyone because they didn't serve his starter first. What's worse is when he finishes his soup...he doesn't get his main. We actually FINISH our mains and he still hasn't gotten his. He makes a comment VERY NICELY to our waitress like hey! Just wanted to check on my meal! She responds, "all our meals are timed perfectly." What!! My buddy goes, "Okay...I've just been waiting for 15/20 minutes so I think I'm ready for my sandwich." She responds, "okay....let me alert the kitchen." Wait? You didn't even tell them he needed his meal?? We wait another 15 minutes. We flag the waitress again and ask where his meal is and she responds "everything is made to order so the kitchen needs some time." Okay. This is a Croque Monsieur. Are you....rising bread right now? What is happening? So I get frustrated and jump into this and say, "Ya but we've been waiting over 30 minutes for his main. We've all finished so now you're asking my friend to eat alone." She responds, "everything is served hot so what is the problem??" !! I get annoyed because up until this moment, we've been pretty nice. But this waitress not acknowledging any issue or trying to make it better and talking back to us like this is weird. So I just say, "Bring a manager over." Well...it didn't matter. This lady learned her attitude from somewhere and it was probably from the manager. The manager immediately is on the offense like, "you ordered a soup and we wanted you to have the soup hot. And we want your next meal to be hot. We make everything fresh and we clean our dishes in between." The heck? All we want is for my friend to be able to eat his main. So I say, now rudely, "just bring the food. We have waited 30 minutes now. Everyone is done with their meal. If you haven't made it, cancel the order and we'll go somewhere else." She responds, "we usually serve the starter first. If you didn't like that, then don't order a starter." SERIOUSLY!? What is happening!? I think about telling her that USUALLY even if only 1 person has ordered a starter, that gets served first before EVERYONE gets their mains TOGETHER. Instead I say, "listen, cancel the order or give us the food but we aren't waiting any longer." And she goes, "we can't cancel it. The kitchen has been working on it." So I say "this better be home baked bread because they've been working on it for 45 minutes by now." IT STILL takes another 5 minutes to get this meal. It is cold. It is an average Croque Monsieur. And they probably all spit in it. At the very end, the waitress comes over and says, "I see what you mean and there were coursing issues but we take pride in our food and we weren't going to degrade that so we could serve you faster." We got the Boeuf bourguignon, Suzette á la Germain, Poulet et fromage de chèvre, and another sweet one with Nutella and bananas. The Boeuf bourguignon and Suzette á la Germain were great, though the Suzette á la Germain was a bit hard and chewy. Kind of like it sat in syrup too long and started carnalizing. The boeuf was packed with flavor. Now, I'm not a goat cheese person. I hate it. My fiancé got the Poulet et fromage de chèvre, and it was disgusting. He liked it, but I thought it was appalling. There were no other flavors but goat cheese. These are huge portions. Not normal crepe portions. I don't recommend getting 2 crepes like we did or you will feel like a whale. They're the size of a normal dinner plate. Service (4/5): Our server was great. She did not work there, and they had only one other staff member working. We have always wanted to visit La Creperie due to its popular reputation being the oldest creperie in the U.S. We decided to go on an empty stomach on Saturday at around 12:30PM. Despite being only 30 minutes after opening, it was very busy, with nearly every table occupied. Because of this, the two servers on the floor did seem to be a bit overwhelmed at times, and thus, service was a bit delayed. We were able to be seated promptly after arriving and got our orders in quickly, but our waters didn't arrive until our food came in (~20 min since we sat at the table). Service: 4/10. The ambiance was very cool, kind of reminded me of a dive bar with all the posters on the wall and the old feeling of the building. Ambiance: 8/10. Food: Soupe a l'oignon gratinée (French onion soup): Super delicious and heavy on the umami carried by the onion flavor. The Swiss cheese melted on top of the soup looked like it was flambed, providing a crunchy crust on the soup, but also had retained its cheese pull capabilities. The sharp flavor of the Swiss perfectly complemented the savory broth. I also love how there was a piece of bread in the soup that soaked up all of the broth; it acted as a sponge of flavor. 10/10. Banana Sara Crepe: I really enjoyed this one. It was sweet but not overwhelmingly so, leaning more heavily on the caramel flavor and the subtle sweetness of the bananas. The vanilla bean ice cream was phenomenal; I don't know how to describe it other than it reminded me of when I was a kid running around in a scorching hot summer and feeling revived by the coolness, creaminess, and sweetness of a vanilla ice cream. The vanilla ice cream tasted natural and leaned more towards its creaminess to complement the subtle sweetness of the caramelized bananas. 8.5/10 Overall, I would come back here if it was a bit less busy for the food. Such nostalgia to go to lunch here for Valentine's Day brunch. My husband and I have been coming here to celebrate Valentine's since the late 80's!! So happy I can bring my whole family to enjoy French cuisine during this sweet holiday! I'm not positive but during dinner they have live music but probably call ahead of time to inquire. The limited menu still has all the Parisian classics like escargot and niscoise salad and the croque mousier and madame sandwiches. What our party was interested in were the entree crepes. We ordered the Beef bourguignon, curry chicken & the creamed scallop and shrimp crepes!! They were all delicious and so well made with crispy crepes on the outside and savory fillings on the inside. I started my meal with a London fog which was such a delightful hot tea that I can't get enough of. They have many different drink options to choose from. I just wanted tea! We ended the meal with a Nutella & banana crepe and the classic banana Sara crepe which is basically bananas foster inside a crepe!! Again both stellar dessert offerings that you can't go wrong when you order. If you have ever gone to France and stopped in a Parisian cafe for a bite to eat or a cappuccino this place will transport you in time to that quaint magical place with the bar seating and then a homey diminutive fireplace withthe tattered travel posters plastered all over the walls. Yay, I finally went here! I've been wanting to go to this crêpe restaurant ever since I moved to my neighborhood at three years ago. It is the oldest crêperie in the US and walking in here feels like stepping back in time. Service is kind yet slow, but that's the Parisian way. We split three crêpes, including the goat cheese and chicken, one, the strawberry and cream, and then the ham and Swiss. All were good, but the chicken one was the best. Crepes are the feature, well done. I ordered Salade Nicoise. It was very good, great dressing, nice portion of tuna, fresh lettuce. Accompanied by wonderful bread. Our server was excellent. One drawback was the wall air conditioner which, when turned on blew dust all over my table and napkin. (it needs attention). One staff member was wiping silverware right behind our table and dropping in a box- clink, clink, clink, clink. Not pleasant and she was clueless as to how it affected the diners. My son and I came on quiet Tuesday night. There were only few tables being occupied, as expected for a midweek dinner. The place is small and cozy inside with a lot of French decor. Their service was great. Very friendly staff and our food came out quick. We ended up sharing a their Croque Madame and their La Classique crepe. The Croque Madame was really delicious. It came with toasted ham, Swiss cheese and topped with a perfectly fried egg and served with fries. The Classique Crepe was just as delicious. I've had plenty of crepes before but these were different. Some parts of the crepe were crispy which was definitely something new. You can never go wrong with Nutella and bananas. Overall we kept it simple and quick and they delivered. I was surprised on how full I got just by sharing and wouldn't hesitate returning here to try out some of their other offerings. read more

Kind of pains me to give this visit this rating, but it's warranted. I visited for lunch on the weekend, and during my time, the restaurant filled up quickly. The ambiance is nice, but unexpected; it gives off a local dive bar vibe. The servers were nice and friendly, but the promptness of service was lacking a bit (especially for not being visibly short-staffed - 3 servers for 10 tables). The food was just alright as well. The best dish I had was the escargot appetizer; it was filling and flavorful for one person. The crepes were just good to me: the chicken/tomato/goat cheese crepe had chunks of chicken breast (they tasted like the canned type) overpowered the savory crepe in texture, and outside of the natural flavors of the cheese and tomato, didn't have any additional flavor. The Banana Sara crepe was better, but the bottom of my crepe was hard to cut through, making eating the crepe challenging. I love crepes and really wanted this restaurant to be in my rotation. The atmosphere is a typical French bistro and our server was very nice. We each got a salad, but I'll give you a heads up. This should be shared. We have been going to La Creperie since it opened in the '70's. And we all know things change, but this visit was a huge disappointment. The service was actually good. Our waitress was sociable and attentive. The food, however, was not good. My spinach crepe with mushrooms had an herb that was too heavy-handed and over powering; plus it just tasted sour. I couldn't eat even half. My huband's croque monsieur was prepared well, but he said the cheese did not taste like it usually does. I had the same experience with my chocolate dessert crepe - which didn't taste typical either. Also, in general, the garden and dining rooms could use a good cleaning. Maybe the owners are done running a restaurant, but it's uncomfortable eating in an establishment that appears so run down. read more

I always love the soup, crepes, wine, ambiance, and service at La Creperie. We went in for our 2 year anniversary and Alexus was very attentive and friendly and made sure we had everything we needed. The smell of fresh summer rain from the open window paired nicely with a hot cup of cappuccino. Germaine joined us at the end and chatted about his journey opening the creperie in 1972. From what I hear, La Creperie is one of the oldest French restaurants in Chicago and you can definitely see its charm. If you're a fan of local restaurants and crepes, this is the place to go. They have a decent sized outdoor patio in the back and the charm of it was great. We saw several people dining on their own, indulging in some delicious crepes, wine, and a book. Here is what we tried: Savory crepes Fruits de mer - the MVP of the savory side of things we tried. It came with scallops and shrimp in a bèchamel sauce with a side of rice Poulet et fromage de chèvre - don't ask me to pronounce this, but the crepe had chicken, roasted tomatoes, and goat cheese Sweet crepes La Cacahuete - this by far was the MVP. The crepe had peanut butter, chocolate, and bananas. SO GOOD! Banana Sara - Bananas in a brown sugar caramel sauce topped with rum and vanilla ice cream Escargots - first time I tried this! No shell to mess with, the snails came in a garlic butter sauce. Order size was 6, and it was good We rolled in there 10 deep and the service was great. Overall, definitely had a really good dining experience, and I would recommend. BATHROOM REVIEW: Located near the middle-back of the restaurant, they had two single-person bathrooms. Inside, it was rather old, but I suppose adds to the charm. Sink drained somewhat slowly, but overall, everything was in working condition. Probably not the cleanest bathroom I've been in. A friend recommended this place as the best crepe place in the area, and it did not disappoint! We sat outside in the courtyard and it had a nice cozy atmosphere. My favorite was the Poulet aux champignons (chicken & mushroom) crepe. The mushrooms went perfectly with the chicken and the herbs cream sauce was very flavorful but not too overwhelming. Also tried the Boeuf bourguignon but it was a bit salty and like a pot roast stew in a crepe. For dessert, the Nutella banana strawberry crepe with ice cream on top was a great finishing touch. It was wonderful, the owner is a very sweet and chatty man and the inside is decorated beautifully with one wall covered in old French posters and a few ceramic plates placed above the bar, a very cozy setting. Both savory and sweet crepes were delicious even after we brought them home. The French onion soup was the best I've ever had, rich flavor and covered in cheese with lots of bread inside creating a great texture! I went to another French restaurant while in Chicago, they were much fancier, however, their soup was much more bland compared to the one I ate at La Creperie. Hard to find many things I didn't like about this place. 30+ years of history, a fire roaring in the main dining room, French music playing throughout, and an anything-but-commercial feel gives this place undeniable charisma. The French onion soup was certainly worth the wait - it takes about 15 minutes given it is cooked fresh in the bowl. It is hearty enough to be a main meal if you so choose. The banana Nutella desert crepe's familiar flavors were a good complement to the hot soup on a cold day. Stopped in when my husband and I were passing through the old hood and enjoyed a delicious late summer meal on their beautiful patio in the back. It was as good as it had been the last time I was there several years ago. Got my old standby, an Orangina and the chicken curry crepe and it was still fantastic. It's packed full of chicken curry with tasty veggies and served with a side of rice and the most delicious mango chutney. My husband got the complète---eggs, ham, and with swiss cheese packed into a buckwheat crepe shell. Topped with the most amazing smoky bacon and tasty sautéed potatoes.
