I have been a customer of La Crescent Animal Care for more than 10 years. I started going there because their prices were the best in the area. I am so disappointed in this shelter right now. This dog could already have a good and loving home had they made it a priority. We were denied because I have a 15yo dog and three of our kids are younger than 10 (the lady who originally found him and had him for a few days before surrendering him to the shelter had a 4 and 7yo the dog did great with). I have owned dogs for 17 years, 11 of those years with small children yet I was denied. I had an emergency with my Beagle Little Girl the eveing of July 19th. She was trying too have her puppies and she couldn't have them. I called LaCrescent Animal Care and told them I thought she had a pup stuck in her birth cancal they relayed the message too Owner Mike McCormick who said I should meet them at the office in 20 minutes. That was fast-they were concerned about my dog. For the people that don't know I have been breeding Beagles and selling them too private partys for 20 years. As soon as I got there they weighed Little Girl 20 pds. with pups in her. Then Mike immeately got stuff ready and did an emergency c-section. Little Girl had 5 pups 4 boys and a girl. I spent over $400 on my dog for an injury she sustained. The Meloxidyl pain medication they prescribed for my dog had a 60% increase in price over the exact same medication sold through Walmart, which equated to over a $40 difference. I purchased the initial bottle of medicine from the clinic because it was a weekend, she was in pain, and I wanted her to have it immediately. She will be on this medication for several weeks, and when it came time to refill, I priced the medication out at other places and found it to be much lower at Walmart. The owners of this clinic refused to write me a prescription, citing that it wasn't in the best interest of the pet because they don't know where Walmart gets it's medications from, and they question the quality. They also told me that the pharmacist at Walmart was trained in human medicine and not veterinary medicine. I was told that the owner believed his clients needed to support small businesses and not big box pharmacies. I used to work at a veterinary clinic and understand that small businesses need to make a profit.I liked the care I received at this clinic, so I offered to meet them half way, and pay $20 more then Walmart's price, or, if they couldn't do that to please give me a written prescription I could take to Walmart. They would not budge, and told me the only way I was getting the pain medicine my dog needed was by paying them what they wanted for the medicine. I understand the concern regarding medication quality when ordering from a no name online site. I wasn't ordering from CheapPetMedscom or some other shaddy website. I was ordering from Walmart, which is one of the top 5 pharmacies in the nation. To say Walmart pharmacutical suppliers are potentially shaddy is rediculous. Having a pharmacist that is trained in human medications isn't a valid arguement either, as the prescribing veterinarian provides the dosage instructions that are printed on the label, not the pharmacist. Walmart also has an entire Pet Pharmaceutical division, so to suggest that their medications are compromised and dispensed by incompetant individuals is ludicrous. I understand that small businesses have to make a profit, and I was completely willing to support that by meeting them halfway. Marking up a medication 60% isn't making a profit, it is screwing your clients. Not handing out written prescriptions when they are requested by a client is also considered unethical by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Below is the link to their website stating their views on written prescriptions. To the owner - imagine you have a trusted relationship with a person and want to buy a product that benefits you. You are also on a limited budget. Imagine being told you MUST purchase it from them, because THEY believe you should support their business when you purchase that product and not anyone elses. Now imagine that they will charge you 60% more. How would feel if you agreed to meet them in the middle, because you trusted that retailer, and they refused, stating invalid arguments? Yea. Not so good. The owners of this clinic are focused on lining their pocket books, and not on helping people provide the care their pet needs. I was a customer of 17 yrs and today I ended this relationship. I left a message over the weekend regarding my cat. I attempted to collect his urine at home, which was a total waste of time and money. My cat can escape every room I have floor that I don't really care about as instructed by the clinic. The woman I spoke with on Monday was so rude to me over the phone. She told me she had no idea why I was calling or what I wanted. Whoever I spoke with Friday must not have charted my call regarding my cat. I explained again what the issue was and all I needed was to bring in my cat which she told me would be $200 the minute I walk to through the door. She made me feel like she didn't want us to come there and she really didn't give a crap about whatever was happening to him. This isn't the first time I've been treated this way. This review is for the groomers, NOT the vet. I picked up my dog from the groomers Friday and was in a hurry so I did not have a chance to examine the quality of the groom. When I got home I noticed the ears were not cleaned, the nails were not clipped, and there was no trim of whiskers or or sanitary trim. I don't even know if he was washed. If they can make this right I will change my review. read more

I recently took my kitten here to get declawed. The price was the cheapest in the area that I could find. The surgery went well and the staff was very friendly with her. Only downfall is that I was told they would call to confirm her surgery, and that they would call a few days after to ensure that she was doing well. Never received any calls from them and checked that they did indeed have my correct phone number. They definitely dropped the ball on pre-post op care. read more
