Go get a crepe from a window for dinner if you are in our situation. What a waste of a meal in Paris. A pound of raw bacon on salads. Croque madame was Oscar Meyer ham and sliced white bread. This place is in Latin Quarter by the Place de la Contrescarpe. The restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating. We sat outdoors and enjoyed the people-watching view. we ordered following: 1.oeuf cocotte, creme aux champignons - Eggs in a casserole with mushrooms cream 2.Arugala bacon salad with goat cheese eggrolls 3.crème Brule the service was kinda below average but that's what is expected in this city !lol! I love this place and I regularly come back. It's what I think of for a classic cafe in Paris. The food is good and reasonably priced. The place is filled with regulars and locals, but they are still kind to visitors who don't speak French like myself. They don't have an English menu but I think it's still easy to figure out. They have a great covered outside seating area with views of the circle and fountain. On nice days, you'll often find musicians playing. read more

Atmosphere: La Contrescarpe is conveniently located in Latin Quarter by the Place de la Contrescarpe. The restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating. We sat outdoors on a very pleasant day in May. Service: We were seated and served promptly by our waiter, who spoke English. Our food came out relatively quickly! Food: We ordered a breakfast set that came with eggs and bacon, pain au chocolat, a baguette, jam, orange juice, and cafe au lait. The eggs and bacon plate came out hot on a skillet. In general, the food and quality was decent but with it being on the pricier side, it was not super impressive. Overall: La Contrescarpe was an impromptu meal for us on a random Tuesday afternoon. The free wifi and convenient location was what drew us to the restaurant. We would recommend La Contrescarpe for the atmosphere and location over the food and drinks. read more

Terrible service but super vibey "salon" aka. "living room" area with comfy seats to sit and have tea or coffee and chat for a while. People were having French lessons next to us. Had a tea for 5€ but that's pretty much the going rate. Would recommend if you want to chill for a while and read a book or chat. read more

Extra star for the service! Also a great people-watching spot :) I practically lived on goat cheese salads while we were in Paris and I ordered one at La Contrescarpe. We had to send back glasses of wine because the wine was watered down. We didn't get more than a few words into explaining this when our waiter cut us off saying, "I know what is wrong." He brought back two more glasses of wine and they were better, but still thin. This filled me with a minor rage. It was late and most people might not recognize watered down wine, but this was an unacceptable and permanent stain on this cafe. I'm considering signing up for TripAdvisor just to reach more people. frequented this café deep in quartier latin when i lived by the Panthéon. it faces Place de la Contrescarpe, a lively square ringed with bars & restaurants with perfect people-watching terraces. mostly locals & students from the lycées gather here for drinks and decent pub food. up the street at 39 rue Descartes is where the 22 yr old E. This place is terrible. Went to order 4 beers after dinner but after 30 minutes of being ignored and beers not showinh up my group and i just left. I called out excuse me to get his attention several times each time louder than the last, but he kept walking away. I know people heard me cause people looked at me then him. One of those great "spot" restaurants in the middle of a neighborhood that exudes a remarkable vibe; think combination of medieval Parisian neighborhood, French students, and immigrants busy running their markets and cafes. I happened upon this place as I was exploring the Latin Quarter on foot and found that they were just about ready to close. They encouraged me to stay, however, and for about $25, I feasted on steak tartare w/ frites, a cheese plate, and a Cote du Rhone that were all exceptional for the price. I get the feeling that this is more of a drinking place than a food-first place, but I must have ordered the right thing, because I was immensely satisfied. I ate a delicious meal there - a salmon dish in a white sauce over rice....the cafe atmosphere was typical Paris, people watching, relaxing, etc. My waiter was great, although there was a female server who was less than helpful. After seeing a movie, we were starving and stumbled upon this place! The dinner crowd hadn't quite appeared and we had our own space to ourselves. There is an outdoor area that it covered and heated with those large mushroom looking warmers. We ordered each dish and both were excellent. At least twice our server came to check on us and make sure we were happy with everything. Been here two times, both times because it was raining and it's always got space inside. But the service is slow. The staff aren't very welcoming (but my no means the worst in Paris!). And the food is expensive and not very good. The place is 100% a tourist bar/restaurant and that's why everything about it is distinctly average. They don't need to do anything very well because they don't have a high number of return customers anyway. From a management point of view I get this. Why spend more money making things better when getting the customers to keep coming back isn't a priority? Anyway, if you want to have a drink (an expensive one!) on the terrace on a summers day and watch people go by, this isn't a bad option for you! My wife and I took a room nearby and enjoyed several meals at the restaurant over the course of the week.. favorites included the steak tartare (great frites!) Brilliant. This bustling brasserie on the Place Contrescarpe in the fifth arrondissement looks much like many other where I've stopped for an evening meal but what a pleasant surprise. I ordered the 16 euro menu and had my best Paris meal of the week. The gigot of lamb was perfectly cooked (roasted, then grilled), seasoned with herbes de Provence and accompanied by a peppery sauce. The large, fist-sized serving of potatoes Dauphinoise was creamy, cheesy and garlicky in perfect proportion. As always, the French add a light fresh salad to every plate. If you like dining with mice this restaurant is for you. I was sitting down enjoying my meal when a mouse came out from nowhere. He scurried back to his corner. I informed the waitress but she act like she didn't know what I was talking about. I was speaking in English so maybe she didn't. I asked that my seat be switched to outside. No problem but of course I couldn't relax. I asked the manager how was he going to accommodate me for having such an unpleasant experience and he said that most of the restaurants in this area have the same problem. So his attitude was oh well, too bad for you. Not only did I leave the restaurant dissatisfied with his response but we also checked out of the hotel in that area. read more
