My 88 year old friend needed a new beautician after her hairdresser moved away. She's an old fashion tease your hair kind of gal who also needs a perm three times a year. Most salons refrain from doing perms and teasing. However La Coiffure was recommended in honor and honestly we couldn't be happier! Tiny shop Full of a warm atmosphere lots of Natural light. My sister just got married in Carmel and we used La Coiffure Salon. Heather did my mani/pedi and I have to say after 5 days my nails STILL look flawless. This is the best manicure I have ever had. My sister got her hair and makeup tested the day before her wedding and then we both got our hair and makeup done the day of her wedding. Gwendolyn did our hair and Nancy did our makeup. They both did great jobs. I do have to say it was pricey, but it was a once in a lifetime cost so it was worth it. 5 stars for Jonathon who gave me gorgeous hair for my destination wedding. Ladies, if you need someone who give you a gorgeous, sophisticated up-do, he is the guy for you. He's young, cute, but really good at what he does. He listened to what I wanted and did exactly what I wanted. I am the pickiest person but he more than pleased me. He was easy to work with and very friendly. My hubby loved my hair. Thanks for making me gorgeous on my special day! It lasted all day, even with the horrible wind. $85 plus tip. 1 star for Melissa the blond makeup artist who made me look clownish. She said and I quote that her specialty is natural looking makeup. My face did not match my neck (she made my face orange), she put too much blush on one cheek while the other side hardly had any. My lipstick looked like I just ate a Popsicle. She outlined my eyes in eyeliner and it was messy and smudgy. When she put on the fake eyelashes, she glued my eyes together. I was mortified with the result and wanted to cry. $95 plus tip for 30 minutes. I felt rushed and she seemed annoyed when asked her to change the lipstick color because it looked so bad. Horrible results, do not use her. She is a nice lady but not a good makeup artist. I could have done my makeup by myself and it would have looked better. I had to redo it all when I got back to my hotel. Waste of money and time! I needed hair and makeup for my destination wedding and they were able to book me on short notice (4 days). The salon is kinda hard to find, very small but cozy. There were 3-4 hair dressing chairs and a manicure table. I had to get my makeup done at one of the seats in the waiting area. Limited parking, especially on the weekends. Jim and Helen are so funny and I enjoyed listening to the gossip and friendly bantering. The place was busy with wedding parties getting pretty for the day. This place was pretty pricey but beggars (who plan weddings at the last minute) can't be choosers. read more

The first time I went to La Coiffure, I had a hair emergency. Literally. I had gone to a girl, whom I had been going to for a year, and she had dyed my hair ORANGE. Big, chunky streaks of ORANGE. It was awful. I'm a blonde and the orange obviously looked terrible. I work at Il Fornaio, across the street, ad one of my co-workers recommended that I go there. I called and Jonathan (the sweetest guy EVER) told me to come in as soon as I got off work. He understood my desperation. Right when I walked in, everyone did the, "Oh My God....." look and I was ushered to the chair. Jonathan immediately got to work. We bleached out the orange (but they kept close watch so as to not over-bleach), put an overall blonde through my hair, and then deep conditioned it. Total, Jonathan worked 4 hours on my hair! Never did he complain. He was so caring! Ever since my traumatic experience, I have been going there. Jonathan never fails to make my hair look perfect! He spends as much time consulting as you need. And the company here is always wonderful. Jim, Helen, Heather...the conversation is always far from dull. Bottom-line: This place is great, you feel like family, and I will continue going here for as long as I'm around! read more

I was in on 9/1/2012 for my destination wedding makeup and hair. I had never been to the salon before and I was blown away. I ended up looking way better then I ever thought possible! I was a little hesitant to get professional makeup done because I am such a natural kind of girl and I didn't want to end up looking funny. Jessica listened to what I normally wear and made all of my features look the best that they possibly could. I was in LOVE with what she created. I looked natural, fresh, well rested, young and glowing. Awesome work Jessica! I wish I could have you do my makeup for me everyday-- or at least would have had you teach me a thing or two! I have been going to La Coiffure for over a year now. I found them on Yelp when we moved to the area. The salon is small and tucked away in The Lobos Lodge. In this case size doesn't matter. The high ceiling and French motifs give it a nice ambiance. It may not be grand and roomy, but the stylists are excellent - that is what really matters. Jonathan was the stylist I went to for the first few months and he is amazing. He does great hair without a lot of products, his blowouts are fabulous and you don't walk out looking like all of his other clients. I have seen his up-dos for weddings and they are gorgeous. Unfortunately, he moved to San Diego and only comes back to La Coiffure once a month. More recently I have been going to Helen, who is also fabulous. I always get compliments on the highlights and cuts she has done. She is a Brit and is a transplant to the Carmel area. Between her dry humor and hilarious anecdotes, she makes can always get a laugh. When Jim (the owner) and Helen both get to gabbing it the laughs are even better. I have never been to Jim, but it is obvious his clients love him and the work he does looks fantastic. Since the local population is mostly of the seasoned citizen variety, they have mastered working with older clients with aging hair. On the weekends you may have to compete with a wedding party to get an appointment. Heather does nails and I have been to her a few times - nails are not really my thing. She is pleasant and does a beautiful job. It appears she has many regular clients, but also enjoys working with new clients. The last time I was in the salon a woman came in to see if she could buy some clear nail polish to do an emergency save on her nails. Heather explained she doesn't sell clear polish, but she would be happy to apply some before the next client arrived. Both my teenagers (a boy and a girl) also enjoy going to this salon because they get the results they want and are treated well by the stylists. Being a military family, it is always hard to find good salons, doctors, dentists, etc. when moving to a new area, but I lucked out with La Coiffure; I found a gem on the first try! read more

Armed with a few good Yelp reviews I called for Jim and penciled in a time for a cut. This was the easiest translation of idea into style I have ever had. I had a reasonably easy request of Greg: wash, cut, blow dry, and to do something different that he thought would look good for an age appropriate male customer--a change-something fresh. He was so busy ensuring that everybody was having a good time, he kept cutting, and cutting, and cutting. The front was not especially inspired but for whatever reason I didn't have him turn me around so I could see the back of my hair as well. It wasn't until the day after as I was getting ready that I discovered the absolute mess that he had made including an area about the size of a 50 Cent piece where he cut too deep and no hint of blending. I thought long and hard if I should have him correct the error. I decided not to go back figuring that it might end up even worse--And his fees were more than double what I usually pay at my salon in Santa Rosa. read more

Jonathan is fantastic! I was visiting for the week and decided I couldn't wait another day to get my color touched up (skunk line on blonde). I actually read the reviews on Yelp and decided to give him a try. Boy am I glad I did. I decided to also get a cut, and left it up to him of what he thought would look good. In my opinion he masters both color and cut. On top of that, he added some foils at no charge to ensure my hair looked great. I will say that this is not a review regarding Helen or Jonathan as stylists. I never had my hair done by them, so cannot speak for their skill or technique. I will say that they are slow to getting back to customers and difficult to get a hold of to make an appointment. I had made an appointment for 12:00pm on the day of my wedding for an updo. I sent them several emails with images I was considering following up with them, and never received a response. Several days later I realized 12:00 wouldn't work for me with timing flowers arriving, etc. so tried to change the appointment to 2:00. I emailed and phoned and did not hear back for a week. I called again, left another message, then received a voice mail saying they could not make the change. I tried to call them again to see if there was another time slot, but no answer. Then called me at 8:00am on the morning of our wedding to say they wouldn't be able to accommodate any change of time. Helen woke me up and then was rude and abrupt when I spoke with her. I told her I wouldn't be able to make it when we spoke at 8:00, but I guess she didn't consider that a cancellation, because come 12:30 she left a scathing message on my voice mail detailing how I had wronged her. Saying things like: "How dare you. We trusted you. Shame on you..." etc. In the angriest tone you can imagine, knowing it was my wedding day. Thank god I didn't go to the appointment, because I would not have dealt well with her stress or attitude face to face. The bad part is it left me having to do my hair on my own - and that was terrifying. I was racing against the clock and had no idea what to do. All in all it worked out. I understand it is a busy time for them with weddings, etc. I understand that they are over booked, and probably working as hard as they can to keep up with things on busy days, but it is completely unnecessary to scold someone like that especially on their wedding day. read more

Gwen did my hair for my Big Sur wedding a few weeks ago. She was wonderful - very patient in the trial, willing to spend the extra time to get things right - - same on the wedding day; listened a lot to what i said and made changes until I was happy. Nancy did my make-up and same thing - - listened to what I wanted and fully delivered. Also had a very good sense for what would "look good" and was able to give advice when needed. Not an inexpensive service (what place is in Carmel) but worth having hair and make-up I was happy about at the wedding! read more

If I could give this experience a no star review I totally would.... if you see an old lady name Gwendolyn run for you life, shield your gorgeous locks lest they be destroyed. If you like ancient hair styling methods, 50 tons of hair spray and out dated hair styling tools all administered to you by a 70 year old lady who is in denial that she needs a hearing aid and won't be listening to any of your wants and needs about your hair, this is definitely the stylist for you. I was in Carmel for a wedding and desperate for a hair place open on a Sunday (No one is open Sundays in Carmel... so frustrating) either way I explained to her this was for a wedding I picked a very simple half updo. I showed her some picks and she proceeded. After about 5 coughing fits from hair spray attack (she sprayed every single strand of hair she was styling with 4 to 6 long up and down strokes of haorspray... you can't make this stuff up) and after she put 3 holes in the ozone above Ocean street, I kept telling her it was making me cough and why we needed so much hair spray and if she could please stop and she just could not hear me... No blow dryers were on or loud music etc. I am convinced she's lost her hearing.... which makes me feel bad... But also she needs to take care of that if she's in a business that requires you to listen to you clients needs in order to be able to properly do your job. After 2 hours of wrestling my hair she was "done" except my hair looked like excrement. I said are you done she said yes that will be 90$ I didn't know what to do... the wedding was in a few hours and I would have rather gone with my natural hair than this concrete zoo she installed on my head. I actually burst out in tears. She said she had a mother wedding party to go to. I had to run around town to buy a flat iron went home tried to wash all the hair spray out (it took a while week of washing and some apple cider vinegar to actually get rid of it) I missed the ceremony and had to spend extra time and effort and money (in addition to the 2 hrs wasted and the 90$ down the drain) correcting the problem... what. a. nightmare. Oh and she tried to blame my hair... it's just your hair... it too heavy??? HAHAHAlike I've never gotten my hair done before!? read more

FANTASTIC EXPERIENCE!!! First off, I want to say that I did not go to La Coiffure salon. They came to me. This review is about Helen who works (and may be part owner, Im not sure) at the salon. I got married at Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur on Halloween this year. A year ago, I researched hair salons up in the Big Sur, Carmel and Monterey area, and La Coiffure seemed to be the most popular for brides. They have a very good reputation. So I contacted them via email. Helen got back to me right away. I booked her one year in advance, and she was willing to come right to my room at Post Ranch Inn. She made everything SO, SO easy. Im half african american and my hair has a lot of texture and can be very difficult to deal with. I explained this to Helen, but she assured me I should not worry. I wanted an elegant updo for my private wedding ceremony. Everything went PERFECT. Helen came to my room at 1pm on my wedding day, as planned. She was VERY, VERY personable and did a FABULOUS job on my hair. It was like she performed a miracle on my hair. It was wonderful!! My updo lasted the whole day without moving or falling. While she was doing my hair, she talked with me and made the whole experience just great. It took maybe 45 minutes. This salon IS very busy. They do a lot of weddings, and my opinion is that brides should book the appointment WELL in advance and make sure that they book the right time. It is very difficult for this salon to move appointment times because they are very busy. I KNOW that is why everything went so perfect for me. I booked a year in advance, and made sure I confirmed twice when it got closer to my wedding day. It does take Helen a day or so to get back to her clients (she is busy). It does cost. If you have them come to you, it will cost you a pretty good chunk of change. But it was SO, SO worth it. I didnt have to worry about a thing. No worrying about traffic (getting to the salon on time, or getting to my wedding on time). They do make-up as well. I cant speak about that, I did my own make-up. ANY bride who is getting married in the Big Sur, Carmel, Monterey area should contact Helen at La Coiffure. She was amazing, and I would have her do my hair again in a heart beat!! I am yelping because I read a yelp from someone who said Helen gave her highlights that were not great. I have been going to that salon for YEARS and have seen Helen give hundreds of highlights. I have NEVER seen a bad one, and I've been going there for 15 or more years. When I read that, I was shocked. If this person hadn't liked her highlights, I know Helen well enough, that if the client didn't like them, she would have fixed them for her. At the last minute (a few weeks before), I changed my mind about wanting to do my own hair and make-up for my wedding in Big Sur...and the team at La Coiffure was so helpful! They came in on a day they don't usually come in and did such a beautiful job with my hair and make-up. They also were able to do my mom and sister's hair - and everyone was happy and felt beautiful! La Coifurre did a fantastic job with a color correction on my hair during my vacation in Carmel. I came in with hot roots from a poor color decision I made before starting my vacation and was desperate to get it fixed. I found them through Yelp reviews, and lucky for me, they squeezed me in. Their newest stylist, Lindsey I believe, was absolutely wonderful and did a superb job of not only removing the violet from my roots but also lifting my almost black ends to give me a uniformed gorgeous rich warm brown tone with dimension. Helen did a fantastic job on my hair. She was able to work with my natural waves that come out in humidity yet still keep my hair under control for a beach wedding. She gave me that perfect mix of beachy waves combined with a wedding-worthy updo. Nancy did my makeup and I couldn't have been happier. She made me look the best I've ever looked! As an out of town wedding guest I was looking for a salon to get my hair and makeup done. After reading the Yelp reviews I decided to book appointments with Gwendolyn for hair and Nancy for makeup. I am very particular about my hair and makeup, but I can say without a doubt both Nancy and Gwendolyn knocked it out of the park. Both my hair and makeup were soft and sexy without trying too hard or being over the top. I left feeling fantastic! The ladies could not have been nicer and they worked really hard to create a nice experience for me. Jim is great too, and keeps a light approachable environment in the salon that is particularly appealing to someone that isn't a regular customer.
