As an out of town wedding guest I was looking for a salon to get my hair and makeup done. After reading the Yelp reviews I decided to book appointments with Gwendolyn for hair and Nancy for makeup. I am very particular about my hair and makeup, but I can say without a doubt both Nancy and Gwendolyn knocked it out of the park. Both my hair and makeup were soft and sexy without trying too hard or being over the top. I left feeling fantastic! The ladies could not have been nicer and they worked really hard to create a nice experience for me. Jim is great too, and keeps a light approachable environment in the salon that is particularly appealing to someone that isn't a regular customer. Do yourself a favor, do NOT go here to get your hair done for your wedding. I made an appointment for 10 o'clock for 4 people to get their hair done, and 2 people for makeup. They scheduled their next bridal party of at least 6 people that I saw, to come in at 11 o'clock!!! An hour for 4 people?? They're like an assembly line for bridal parties, they try to get you in and out as fast as they can. The hair stylists... were so bad!! My curls fell out half an hour later, WAY before my wedding was scheduled to take place. I had to redo it all before my wedding. My bridesmaids were equally as disappointed. My maid-of-honor wanted beachy waves/curls... they gave her this poofy, overly teased horrible old lady hair style, it looked like a lion's mane. When she told them AGAIN she had wanted some sort of curl/wave, the stylist said "there's nothing else I can do" and WALKED AWAY to go work on another person after he only spent 20 minutes on my maid-of-honor. Their "gorgeous style" for my mother? They took 10 minutes to straighten her hair! That's it. She would've done that herself, better, and saved herself $85. We spent over $400 on our hair, and we all had to redo it ourselves because they refused to fix the messes they made. The makeup artist... was amazing!! I would ONLY go here to get your makeup done. My mom and I had our makeup done, and even though it only took him 15 minutes to do our makeup, it looked absolutely gorgeous. He gave us fake lashes, and they were not at all uncomfortable and lasted all day. A++ for the makeup artist. VERY expensive at $95 a person, but well worth it for gorgeous pictures. They really need to get their scheduling down better. I made the appointment 4 months in advance for noon, my wedding was at 5:30. They KNEW it was at 5:30, but still called me a month before my wedding to say they had double booked themselves and needed my bridal party to come in at 10am. They reassured me the timing would be okay, WELL, they were wrong... my hair had pretty much fallen apart by 2pm. Their option? Come back at 4:30, I MIGHT be able to get you in to touch up your hair, I'll squeeze you in because I already have a client coming in at that time. Needless to say, I didn't go back, I had to get into my dress for pictures at 4! I fixed it myself. AND... the morning of my wedding, I got a nasty call at 9:30am... I answered the phone and heard "where are you? you have a 9:30 appointment and no one's here yet!" I told them THEY made the appointment for 10am. I didn't appreciate the attitude and being rushed on the morning of my wedding. End result... if I had to do it over again, I would definitely NOT go back in there. Oh, and I forgot to mention... this place was literally smaller than the bathroom in my hotel room! read more

We have been going to La Coiffure off and on for twenty years. Met Jim and his staff on our honeymoon (we are STILL married) and have enjoyed both haircuts for both, and manicures for my wife. They always treat us nice, even though we are "just tourists" and we can tell they do a lot of local business! read more

My experience was so awful at this salon that I have to wonder about any positive yelp reviewers...all I can say is, consider the source. I scheduled a blowout the day before I got married in Big Sur. When I got there, Jim Nault was slow to greet me and eventually showed me to the chair where he washed my hair with some kind of cheap shampoo. Then, when he started blow drying my hair, I noticed that the dinky little blow dryer was something you'd find in a bad hotel and the vent was actually scotch taped together. He took a small round brush and proceeded to hold the blow dryer directly on my hair and it started to burn. He didn't notice because he was talking to someone else. I asked him to stop and suggested that we use a nozzle on the end of the blow dryer (any hair stylist worth their weight would already be using one). He didn't know what I was talking about. I told him I could get my personal blow dryer out of my car and he could use that. He gave me the worst attitude, even told me "Sweetie, you were 10 minutes late and I have other people to help today besides you". Awesome way to diffuse a situation...He slapped me on the back and told me to go get my little blow dryer and hurry back. I left with hair dripping, hours to go before my wedding, and I did NOT go back nor will I ever. BRIDES BE WARNED: This is not the place if you're interested in working with competent, courteous, capable stylists. I felt like someone's drunk dad was blow drying my hair and then giving me attitude for not liking it. Glad I spoke up for myself. This place is a disgrace. read more

I got married on Saturday. Nancy did my make up and did an awesome job. I was disappointed with my hair. I schedule my hair appointment two months in advanced. Called and confirmed my appointment with the owner the week before my wedding. They doubled booked me. Instead of my hair and makeup being from 1 to 3 pm. It took a total of 4 hours 15 minutes. My wedding was suppose to be at 630 pm. Sitting there and watching the beautician working on someone else's hair knowing I am short on time. I brought a picture and sadly my hair did not look even close to it. My vale kept coming out while we were taken pictures. The salon took my wedding from being relaxing and stress free to causing increase in stress and not to mention I was late to my own wedding due to the lack of there planning. La Coiffure is a quaint, nice, and peaceful place to get one's hair done beautifully in a calming and relaxing environment. The professionals are skilled at giving one exactly what he/she wants and needs. They create a very comfortable environment and the entire staff is extremely personable and friendly; however, no one is overbearing. Further, each interaction is carried out with professionalism. I had my hair done for a few wedding events at the salon and a make up artist was even arranged for me - the experience was excellent. My friends and family agree. I especially recommend Helen for both blow-outs and updos . . . She can work with even fine and thinning hair and she is very in tune to what her clients want. I recently had Jim, Helen and Nancy come to Big Sur to do the hair and makeup for my very large bridal party and they were AMAZING! They were very efficiant and ahead of schedule. More importantly everyones hair and makeup looked wonderful and very classy! They knew exactly what I envisioned and made it look easy! I had a destination wedding in Carmel and chose this salon based on yelp reviews. If my review was based solely on Helen, my stylist, than it would have been a 5 without question. Helen was amazing, she very quickly figured out what I wanted for my bridal look and nailed it. Also, on the day my brother was very ill and she offered to help me find a place for him to watch the beach ceremony where he wouldn't have to walk all the way down to the beach. I found her talented, caring and all around awesome. I scheduled a run through for the day before but she was so talented that I don't really think I needed to. She chared $85 for the updo and it took her less than an hour. The salon is charming, tiny and the stylists and cliental were all very friendly. The only reason that I didn't give the salon a 5 star rating is that when I made the appointment they got the date wrong. When I called to confirm we realized that the date was wrong and by then another wedding party had booked up most of the day so I had to take an early appointment instead of an afternoon and they didn't have time for my makeup and nails so at the last minute I needed to book another place. This really put a cramp in my plans for the day as I would have prefered to relax, go for a jog and get a massage, prior to getting dressed up . read more

Don't bother with anywhere else for weddings and special affairs. Helen and her staff do amazing work quickly and efficiently with great art but no drama and they have reasonable pricing as well. I had my hair styled for my wedding by Helen. She did a beautiful job. Everyone loved my hair, and I was married outdoors on one of the windiest days I have ever experienced, but my hair still managed to look great in all my pictures! And the salon was a cute little place, but it was short on space, but that is probably to be expected in such a nice area on a popular street. I would recommend Helen for weddings. read more

I am new to the Monterey area, and I was so lucky to find Lindsey, the new stylist at La Coiffure. She is very knowledgeable about color, which is important to me, as I like highlights in dark auburn hair and it needs to done by a stylist who is really knowledgeable--she certainly is! She is imaginative, agreed with what is flattering to my face, and gave me a wonderful, flattering, creative style. Plus - she is a genuinely nice person; I really enjoy talking with her!
