Came here a couple weeks ago to order for takeout for the first time. I'm so happy I came here! The staff is so kind and helpful. It's a very small place where you can sit with friends at a table or sit alone on the side area where the stools are. My favorite was the lollipop churro with fruit on it. I really really want to go back just for that. Definitely will get that the next time I'm in the area. It has the best balance of sweet and sugar in the churro lollipop. Good if you like sweets. Also it's drizzled with condensed cream, which I find it totally unnecessary and make it a bit too sweet. When I lived in Bergen County this was the place to go. After 2 years returned with the family and food was horrible. The Moro rice was more of a congri. Appears to have been reheated and dry. The plantains were not sweet but also reheated and hard. The waiter not only added his tip to the bill but charged us for a lemonade of $5 when we didn't have any. Paid $182 for family of 4. La Churrería is one of last old school Cuban restaurants left in Union City, all the food is good there from breakfast to dinner, I recommend the oxtails with black rice and yuca, they give you a nice size portion on the oxtails and they're not cut in half like other places do. I was missing the Cuban sandwich/empanada combo from Sophie's that I used to get all the time when I lived in NYC, so I figured I would try a local spot. I checked on Yelp and saw La Churreria had pretty good reviews, so I decided to give it a shot. I have to say, I was disappointed in the meal. I tried the chicken and beef empanadas which both tasted okay but were quite thin, almost to the point of looking squished. They also don't provide any sort of dipping sauce which is a pretty huge negative when comparing to Sophie's or some other Cuban places I've eaten at that have delicious empanada sauces. I also tried the Cuban sandwich and it was just downright bad. Like the empanadas, it was very thin with hardly any meat in it, and there was no mustard and no pickles either - what kind of Cuban sandwich doesn't have mustard or pickles? They're staple ingredients for any Cuban sandwich. And again, it had no sauce of any kind. It was just ham/pork/cheese on a thin, bland, dry sandwich. To make matters worse, the meat had a weird, chewy texture that was a little gross. It was possibly the worst Cuban sandwich I've ever had in my life, and I've had many - I didn't even finish eating it. Based on my meal, I'm actually very surprised to see such good reviews - I can only assume that some of the other dishes they have are better, but a Cuban restaurant with mediocre empanadas and a bad Cuban sandwich just isn't for me. It's cheap it's good nothing that will blow your socks off but that's not what this place is. It's been here for years, my mother ate here as a teenager and she's 60 now. The food here is delicious, the service is quick and courteous, and the best part is that it's CHEAP! I had the ropa veija (shredded beef) with a side order of tostones (fried plantains). So here is the good bad and ugly. First off it is a Cuban place, owned by Cubans. Not sure why other reviews questioned that. The waiters are not all Cuban. Mixture of Latinos. What's the big deal? Food- the food is good at a decent price and you get big portions. Personally I like coming for breakfast. They are on point with their breakfast. Steak and eggs is a go-to. Service- depends who you get. My Salvadoran morning waitress is a charm. I've honestly never seen someone command the floor like she does. Just amazing and does not get flustered when busy. Other waiters are not so good. Some not friendly. I will say the owner needs to be more charming. She usually cashiers in evening. Barely smiles or thanks customers. Red Flag- years ago l saw a can of roach spray INSIDE kitchen. More recently saw a roach in bathroom. So they definitely need to work on that. For this reason I come less frequently and only come for breakfast. Overall- it's a mixed bag. For me...I will stick to breakfast with our waitress and that is it. Just had a terrible experience at this restaurant. It was a place we came for years even after we moved away. We hadn't been there in a while and even though we live more that an hour away we came. We order our meals and asked for water. The waiter brings out 2 BOTTLED waters. We let it go. We ate our meal and ask to wrap our leftovers. They charged us .50 cents. We look at our meal and they charged us 12 95 when on the menu it read 8.95 as a Monday to Friday special. We told our waiter who tells us he gave us the one not on the special. After much back and forth we are told that they are fixing the bill and come back with a bill which the had reduced by .25 cents. I call him on this and they tell us it's the tax. Even though tax was charged at the end of the bill. We felt like we were cheated. Not only did they lose our business but the business of 3 other families that used to come with us. This place is famous for their pan con bistec which basically a steak sandwich with french fries. So i wanted to try the steak sandwich. They have a special for 4 pieces for 5.95 Dont order it !!!!!! Its horrible. Very thin slices of bad pieces of low grade steaks bits with french fries. So i sent it back and told them how disappointed i was with the steak sandwich as i am Cuban born and know what a good pan con bistec looks and taste. So i end up ordering a pallomilla steak with white rice and red bean.. The steak is very thin and dry with very few fried onions on it. A very small piece of lime came with the steak. Beans where tasteless. I dont even think they put any salt on them. Is this place going out of business that they have to skim on quality and quantity???? Just really bad quality food. I did notice this during my last visit a few days ago. Now, most of the time I order the baby churrasco which is a hefty portion of skirt steak with 2 sides. I normally order white rice and black beans. I always enjoy my baby churrasco, it is cooked to my liking without an issue. Also, their smoothies are delicious. Wanna have a good time with good food and great people? This is the spot to do just that! It such a homey place. They easily accommodated our group of about 11 people. The service is spectacular and the food is wonderful. The portions are humungo, so you will definitely need a doggie bag for leftovers. I got bistec with arroz Moro and a side of tostones. Everyone else in my family got something that looked and smelled equally delicious. I didn't pay but my dad voiced that the price was really reasonable and actually surprising for the amount of food and the service provided. I wish I knew the name of our waiter because I would definitely request him if I get the chance to eat here again (all I remember is that he had a music note tattooed on his neck). Went there with my friend to have lunch and the first thing we noticed when we sat down was the smell of sewage. We moved to the front hoping that sitting further away from the bathroom would alleviate the smell but that was not the case. Persuaded to visit restaurant on the recommendation from my eight and six year old sons Corey and Gabriel. Corey being the die-hard carnivore had the "Pan con Bistec" (steak sandwich) which includes french fries on warmly toasted bread. Gabriel had the arroz blanco con Frijoles (white rice and beans) which were amazing once you drizzle beans over the rice, yum! I had the traditional classic Cuban Sandwich which includes, lightly buttered and toasted Cuban bread, pernil, ham, swiss cheese, thinly sliced dill pickles layered and mojo. All this food and not a drop to drink? Rest assured the beverages will not break the bank, on average a can of pepsi, sprite or expresso will only set you back $1.00. Enough about lunch, lets talk about the breakfast menu. For a mind-boggling $3.50 you can have a feast fit for a queen. My father has been coming to this restaurant since he lived in the area back in the 80s, so I've been coming here since I was a little kid. Everything from the steak to the sandwiches, I love it all. Love this spot! Good food, so inexpensive (2 for $5 Cubans, etc. etc.), and quick! Their chicharron is delicious and sold by the pound. Nicely marinated and cooked fresh so it's hot and crispy! On Sunday's they have the tamal en casuela and it's hearty with great flavor. Definitely would come back here if I wanted something quick. The only downside is street parking, but good thing that doesn't affect how delicious the food is! read more
