We've been loyal customers of La Catrina for years -- easily 50-60 visits -- and it used to be one of our favorite spots in Ormond Beach. Unfortunately, the experience has changed significantly. It really feels like management has shifted to the son, and the entire service culture has declined with it. On our most recent visit, the service was almost nonexistent. Our fajitas came out flaming hot, but we waited so long for tortilla shells that everything was cold by the time we could eat. I even asked the manager directly, and all he said was "They're coming" before walking away -- no follow‑up, no urgency. Our server barely checked on us the entire meal. What made the experience worse was hearing staff make unprofessional comments about customers, including remarks about people's age and appearance. That's something we never experienced here before, and it created an uncomfortable atmosphere. The food is still good -- the kitchen continues to do their part -- but the service and professionalism have dropped so far that it overshadows everything else. We truly hope the original management steps back in and restores the level of customer service this restaurant used to be known for. read more

My favorite Mexican restaurant (Frida's) just closed down, so I decided to look around for one I hadn't tried before. The food at La Catrina was good, but the prices are higher than Frida's. I usually order two of the 3-item combos so I can take a lot home for leftovers. I ordered 3 steak tacos (hard shell, American style) for one meal, and the other consisted of two chicken enchiladas and a chicken tamale. The tacos were stuffed full, and the meat was tender and lean. However, it didn't have much flavor. At Frida's I was able to order barbacoa steak which was marinated and very flavorful. Both came with rice and beans, and while the rice portion was adequate, the portion of refried beans was very small. Considering that each meal was $3 more than Frida's, I was a little disappointed. My large (20oz?) Modelo draft was cold and satisfying. Overall, the food and salsa were much milder (a little bland actually) than Frida's, and while my wife prefers it that way, I'd like it a little spicier. We will probably go again, mainly because my wife liked it. (She had chicken enchiladas) read more

We discovered this place on a Saturday drive through the area and are glad we did. It's a charming little restaurant we would've overlooked without all the positive Yelp reviews. I had the three-colored enchiladas, which referred to the cheese, red and green sauce on top. I could choose chicken or beef inside and got some of each. We ate indoors and appreciated the clear plastic hung between booths for health reasons. There's also a nice outdoor patio for when it's not too hot. Hubby and I decided to try La Catrina Cocina the weather was iffy and we wanted Mexican food with covered outdoor seating. This was our first time trying. We were greeted as we entered the restaurant and were seated immediately by Ana who also turned out to be our server. We ordered a pitcher of the house margaritas which was very good. I ordered a chicken quesadilla and a side of queso dip, the chicken quesadilla was tasty but was not cut through so cutting with a butter knife was a bit challenging as well as ripping the slices I tried to cut. My husband ordered the California burrito with steak. We are still trying to figure out why it was served with French fries. We live in Southern California and were never served French fries with any Mexican entrees. The seats to the table are not the most comfortable and they make you feel as if you have to sit correct and not relax as you should feel when you're out to eat after a long week of work. Food was pleasant but my burrito was served with cold chicken i sent back once to be reheated and still cold I notified some young guy and as he walked away with my plate he made sure to say something in response to me loud enough so the table behind us could hear "well it's served with lettuce so we can't heat it up because it will wilt " and I said " the meat is cold " ( was served with cold things inside so there was no saving it next time I know to order the cold stuff on the side so that's possible because I had to have that taken off the bill... which they did for me , thanks guys ! ) Food is over priced. But better than Fridas quality so I'll be back. Service was quick. And the atmosphere was nice. Seriously, some very good Mexican food with wonderful, friendly service, and reasonable prices (Pitcher of Modelo cerveza for $9, yes, please!) Ok, let's talk about the food: There's a game I like to play with the waiter... This or That.... after selecting various dishes I asked if the waiter recommended this one or that one... it came down to the Shrimp Bowl, and I am so happy I ordered it. Several very large flavorful shrimps mixed in with rice and beans, vegetables and their special sauce with just the slightest hint of heat... it tasted so fresh and delightful, I couldn't stop eating it... scoop up a bunch in their chips... whole new level. Hubby had the Cochinita Special tacos. He found them flavorful and just right. He even liked the beans and rice. As in prior reviews, I always compare a restaurant's rice to my Tia's who made the best rice ever. To me these were about a 3.5 as compared to hers, but better than some I've had. We also tried the elotes callajeros which basically means "street corn." They do a good job replicating the corn you buy in the evenings in pretty much any Mexican town which is slathered in crema, coated in cheese and sprinkled with some chili powder. Yummy..! The guacamole is big and bold and in your face, served in a cute molcajete... chips are ok, maybe not the freshest I've had, but I'm not going to take off a point based on the chips when everything else was so good. Is it authentic Mexican... not so much based on the food we tried, but the menu does have the flavors of Mexico, and I will have to try some of their other dishes to make a better judgment on that... Like another customer in the place said, "I'd tell my friends about this place, but then it would stop being my place..." I'd like to do the same and keep this place a secret, but it's too good not to have everyone else enjoy... I know we'll be back, if anything to try several other appetizing things on the menu and have another pitcher... maybe of margaritas this time... top shelf! read more

Authentic Mexican food with a fun atmosphere! The portions are decent, but I've been to places with a little bit more bang for your buck, which is the only reason I'm giving it a four star instead of a five star. In all honesty, my husband and I were almost full just off the complimentary salsa and chips they bring out when you arrive! He got the mahi tacos, I got the combo with 2 tamales and a burrito. The tamales were mostly dough, which was a little disappointing. However, what I didn't eat in the evening turned into a nice breakfast hash in the morning, so I can't complain too much! We also got the jalapeño guacamole, which was good. A tad bit more like could've improved it, and the jalapeños came in big slices stuck into the top instead of dispersed throughout the guac. This is my new favorite mexican place! Finally got around to trying this place since they opened right around when COVID was at it's peak. You can not miss it from the street since it is very well lit. We sat ourselves outsides and is very nice with the lights at night and beautiful decor. We were greeted right away and they brought us chips and salsa. Our waiter was very nice and attentive. For drinks we both ordered the classic margarita which are really good. For our entrees, I got the Vegetarian Molcajetes which came with fajita fixings. I asked for them to omit a few things and add chicken which they accommodated to. My mom got the chicken fajitas which came with 6 tortillas! The food came out very quick. Everything was very delicious. It was a ton of food and for the price very reasonable. We both took home leftovers. Oh and must also mention that the menu is very big. There is something for everyone. This is the type of place where you can come back to and try something new each time. Rarely do I post a 1-star rating. I understand the challenges restauranteurs face, as I once "dabbled" in the industry for 33 years! Having said that, this meal was a complete disaster! There were so many issues with our order, the amount of food and the quality of the food, I'll leave you with a few words of advise. If you don't like your GrubHub or DoorDash orders...you complain to the deliverer...NOT the restaurant. Confusing but that's the way things work. If you're expecting a great meal from La Catrina Cocina, you'll be very disappointed. I can only assume the 5 star reviews are self-interested "plants".
